Secretly, Wolverine played Deckball behind closed doors every night until the first round of the
championships. He didn't want any of the other players to know that he was a major force in the game, and he didn't want
anyone to know that he had a special Deckball talent, which was pretending that he wasn't very good until the last
minute of the game... that's when he would take control by scoring at will, leaving his opponents helpless.
Well, after the first day of matches, everyone at the tournament wasn't too keen on Wolverine's tactics, so a few of the
players decided to cook up something special for him...

..."Grrrrr..." groaned Penelope as she watched her good friend Number Six lose to Wolverine. "How does he do it?
He's won his first two matches by a long shot!" Just as she finished thinking out loud, she felt a presence behind her.
She turned around and saw somebody else in her league--Mr. Shankly.
"Penelope, it seems like you're a little irritated with Wolverine," said Mr. Shankly. "Trust me, I lost to him.
I know he's up to something..." As Mr. Shankly was talking, a thoughtful look came across Penelope's face.
"I know!" she exclaimed. "Let's follow Wolverine to his NeoHome and see what he does there! I'm sure that he
cheated somehow."
Later that night, Penelope and Mr. Shankly followed Wolverine as he walked home. After he went inside his house,
the two 'investigators' snuck into his backyard. They were about to climb up onto his front porch when they heard
a snarl coming from behind them. They turned around and Penelope gasped. It was Number Six and he didn't look too
happy...

...Who could blame Number Six? He thought he was going to win it all! Wolverine just had to suddenly shine in the
last minute, beating everyone by the mile. People were starting to get suspicious too.
"I guess you're both here to spy on Wolverine too?" Number Six hissed. Penelope and Mr. Shankly looked at each other
and paused. Silently they crept towards Number Six who stood leaning against the fence, camouflaged by the night shadow
of the tree.
"We've got no choice." Mr. Shankly shrugged.
"I know... something's fishy," Number Six muttered in a grumpy tone. He remembered the game he'd played earlier on the
day and growled.
Penelope explained, "We think he's up to something."
Number Six nodded, "I think he is," he paused, watching Wolverine's NeoHome glow suspiciously, then continued,
"I got a glimpse of inside. He was in his lab fiddling with bottles and murky potions he might have gotten from
the Haunted Woods."
Mr. Shankly pulled a confused face, "He's got a lab?"
"That's not the point," Number Six growled, "The others saw it too. And they're somewhere in the house now."
It seems like Wolverine would have a couple more unexpected guests that night. Penelope and Mr. Shankly were
baffled. "Everyone else is inside?"
Number Six shrugged, "I think so. I have a feeling he's feeding potions to the other players..."
Dun Dun Dun!

...Before Number Six could finish talking there was a loud bang, as the window above their heads was abruptly opened.
"What are you doing here!" exclaimed Wolverine. He glared at them all from the window.
Penelope thought desperately. "We...umm...heard about...your lab and..."
Wolverine smiled wickedly. "So, you wanna see some of my potions, well come right in." With
amazing strength he snatched up the three investigators and pulled them through the window.
Inside there was a large table cluttered with bottles of different coloured potions and a bunch of empty test
tubes and potion bottles. At the opposite end of the room there were two doors, both bolted shut.
Wolverine smiled. "Well, you caught me. No one's supposed to know that I make secret potions to make myself a
better Deckball player. I'm experimenting with one right now. But you already know too much..."

...And with that he took the three and tied them up, taping their mouths shut as well. Thinking to himself,
"Hmm... Which ingredient should I use next?" He turned and faced the three.
"Soon, very soon, I will be the greatest Deckball player in all of Neopia. I mean, don't take it wrong, but
I don't need you three going off and telling everyone about my plans. That would just ruin everything."
Penelope tried to talk from under the tape, but found that impossible. Wolverine walked over to her and ripped the
tape off. "Owwww!!" she said.
"What were you saying my dear?" Wolverine says smugly.
"You'll never get away with this! Dave Scorcheski will find out and come looking for us, and then you'll be real
sorry--" And with that Wolverine covered her mouth again, going back to his work.
About fifteen, maybe twenty minutes later the three heard an evil laugh coming from the back of the lab. Then Wolverine
appeared to be carrying something that looked something like a potion. "Potion!" Penelope thought in her mind. "Oh no...."
Wolverine looked at Penelope. "Yes, dear Penelope, this is the potion that is going to win me the crown and make me the
best Deckball player forever!" He started laughing again and started to cough, and cough. "Ahem, where was I? Oh yes-"
'DING DONG!' "Well who could that be?" Wolverine grumbled something under his breath and walked out to see who it was.
Mr. Shankly looked at Penelope and Number Six with a worried look. Just then Wolverine walked back in...

..."Sigh, some guy trying to sell me a potion. Ha! I can make better potions than that guy anytime."
Penelope mumbled something under the tape. Wolverine ripped the tape off.
Penelope said, "Why don't we settle this once and for all? Let's play a game of Deckball, shall we?"
Penelope smiled to herself, as she knew Wolverine could not resist any kind of competition.
"Fine then, good idea. Finally I will beat you once and for all."
The next day, Penelope, Number Six, and Mr. Shankly went to the Deckball Practice Arena, waiting for
Wolverine. Then, suddenly, with a loud BOOM, came Wolverine from a now vanishing puff of smoke.
"Ha," he said with a teasing voice, "Ready to lose?" he said.
"More like ready to win," said Penelope, preparing for the toughest game of Deckball ever, and maybe,
just maybe, her very last one...

...Wolverine walked out of the room for a second as a brilliant idea formed in Penelope's mind.
What if she could get her hands on that Deckball potion? She could take a tiny sip that
Wolverine wouldn't notice, giving her a chance to compete with him...
Tied up to the other three, she couldn't possibly get the potion. Or could she? Penelope
reached her hand out through the rope.
Not being able to reach the potion, Penelope reached her foot a little bit up as to move the table closer.
No luck.
Suddenly realising what Penelope was doing, Number 6, who was closest to the table, reached out his sneaker.
The table moved a bit! But so did the potion. It tipped over... everything seemed to be in slow motion.
The glass shattered on the floor, notifying Wolverine of Penelope and Number 6's activity...

..."No!!! You fools! Look what you've done!" Wolverine screamed in panic. He hastily tried to scrape a handful
of the liquid into his mouth, but the potion immediately vanished into a puff of smoke in seconds. Wolverine
roared in anguish and stomped his feet into the floor. Suddenly, he whirled around to face the three.
"Do you know how long it took me to create that potion? Or, how difficult it was to search through the Haunted
Woods for the exact ingredients?" Wolverine asked through gritted teeth. Penelope, Number 6, and Mr. Shankly could
sense Wolverine's anger rising by the minute. They were beginning to get frightened.
"Well, umm...uh..." Penelope stammered. She had a plan. If only she could gather up enough courage to stand up to
Wolverine. Number 6 stared at Penelope and furrowed his brow. He had no clue what she was up to, and wasn't ready
for the consequences either.
"So, let me ask you something Wolverine. Are you as tough as you make yourself out to be?" Penelope asked in a shaky
voice.
Wolverine paused and stared blankly at Penelope. "Yes, yes I am in fact."
"Then, you obviously don't need your puny, little potion to aid you. I'm sure a big, strong guy like you doesn't need
any help," Penelope said as she began to gain more confidence.
"I suppose you're right. All this time I've been spending on the stupid potion was a waste!"
Penelope smiled and giggled quietly. She winked at Number 6 and Mr. Shankly who finally understood what she was up to.
"Wolverine...are you...up for a challenge?" Penelope asked with a glimmer in her eye. Her plan had worked...

...Penelope was off to the side of the Deckball field. Number 6 handed her a water bottle and she took a long swig.
She wasn't sure if she was up to this challenge, but she helped get the other two into this mess, and she certainly
wasn't going to back down now. She looked across the court to lock eyes with Wolverine. They had a mini-staring
contest, but Wolverine looked away when a small, haggard looking Jubjub handed him his own water bottle. BUZZ!
The game started. The ball came towards Penelope. She greedily took it, and started pushing it towards Wolverine's goal.
Suddenly, above her head, a cracker appeared. Wolverine was heading for the cracker, but Penelope lost track of the
ball, and grabbed the cracker instead. She was going faster now, but Wolverine had already taken the ball, and was
heading towards Penelope's wide-open goal...

...using super speed, she cut neatly in front of him to intercept the ball. Speeding towards Wolverine's goal now she
flicked it neatly with the side of her foot. Suddenly an anchor sprang up on the deck. Tripping over it, the ball
spun away from Penelope and she could only watch helplessly as Wolverine spiraled away with it. With a sudden idea,
Penelope grabbed the anchor rope and lassoed Wolverine's feet together. Number 6 and Mr. Shankly shouted encouragement
through their gags. Wolverine hit the deck as Penelope, rising majestically, punched the ball towards the empty goal.
Time slowed and ran like sticky toffee, as minutes felt like hours, as the ball rose and gradually began to fall...

...the ball went in the goal! Everybody (except Wolverine) started cheering. They couldn't believe it.
Wolverine got to his feet. He yelled, "YOU CHEATERS!"
"Well, we aren't the ones who was drinking potions, so we win," said Penelope.
Wolverine snarled. "I will play my nasty tricks and win again someday," he shouted.
"Oh, no you won't," Penelope argued. "You have to give up Deckball forever."
"We never agreed to that," shouted Wolverine.
"Wanna bet?" Penelope held out a contract.
"I never signed that," said Wolverine.
"Oh, yes you did," stated Penelope. "Remember that guy that was trying to sell you a potion? Well, in
case you don't remember he asked you to sign something."
"Yeah, I remeber that," said Wolverine.
"Well, it just so happens that you signed this contract with your name." Penelope read aloud:
If I lose this match I will give up Deckball for ever. Signed, Wolverine.
Penelope smiled. Wolverine could not believe it. He was so angry he ran into a room where stored potions and
drank them all. Nobody could have guessed what happened next. Fire surrounded Wolverine and he disappeared in
a cloud of smoke. The staff never had to worry about being beat by a guy with a Deckball potion. Or so they
thought. Dun dun dun!!!!
The End
