Story Seven Hundred Twelve Ends Friday. December 18
It was just another normal day. The sun was bright, up in the blue sky, tourists were buying souvenirs and some were even taking pictures while taking a tour inside a boat, through the lake. Again, nothing out of the ordinary.
The bell inside the store rang and an Aisha covered in waterproof clothes came inside and walked towards the cashier.
"Hello, Tod. How are you?" The Aisha asked, cleaning his pair of glasses with his wrists.
"I'm fine, Lucas," The Lutari took a piece of fabric that was under the balcony, for which he uses to clean the dust off, and handed it over to Lucas. "What brings you here, anyway? With a weather like this, I suppose you have tons of tourists wanting to take a ride on the boat."
"You bet," He began. "You see, one of my clients lost her pair of earrings today. She accidentally let them fall outside the boat, and now they're at the bottom of the lake. I may know where they fell, but I can't be sure of that. Well, um, would you mind diving and searching for them? You're the best swimmer in Kiko Lake, and if I don't give her earrings back, she'll get furious."
"That's okay, I'll do it."
Tod went inside the office room and changed his clothes for a bathing suit and, upon leaving his store, made sure to lock the door. Then both of them walked towards the lake.
"We were by that part of the lake when she tripped and the earrings fell." Lucas said pointing to somewhere next to the center of the lake.
"Okay, it may take some time, but I'll get it for you."
"Oh, Tod, you're the best!"
The Lutari walked peacefully towards the side of the lake and felt the temperature of the water with his right foot. It was perfect. He entered the water with his full body and dove. Tod was an incredible swimmer, which was a natural ability of his as he's a Lutari. It didn't take him too much time to get to the middle of the lake, where the earrings were supposed to be.
After a minute or two of swimming around the colored corals at the bottom of the lake, Tod spotted something. It was small and bright. As he approached it, he noticed that he’d found the pair of earrings of Lucas’s client.
As he grabbed them with both his hands, though, something else caught his attention…

...It was hard to tell what it was with the sand and algae that has gathered on this mystery object, but there was a clean spot that gave off the gleam that caught Tod's attention. This object easily fit into the palm of his hand. He would have cleaned it off right there if he wasn't running out air.
The Lutari took the earrings in one hand and this object in the other and swam to the surface. The first thing he saw when he hit air was Lucas standing at the shore. He waved to his friend when he saw him. Tod swam back to shore, being careful not to drop the goods he got.
"Here are the earrings," Tod said once he was on the shore. He handed the Aisha the earrings.
"I can't thank you enough," Lucas replied gratefully. "That customer would have been-" He looked at his hand. "This isn't the earrings."
Tod took that mystery object back and gave him the earrings. "Sorry about that. I just found this on the lake's floor."
"What is it?"
"I don't know. That's what I'm trying to find out." He knelt to the water and began to clean off the algae. "Come back when you give the customer the earrings and I might have an answer."
Lucas gave a quick nod and ran back to where the tour he was giving let out; the angry customer was told to wait there. Tod wet the object and rubbed off the algae and sand clumps until it was mostly gone. Once it was clean, Tod examined it. It appeared to be...

...a tooth.
Tod took the tooth back to his shop, where he held it under the light that hung over his counter, examining it. Unlike most teeth, this one was incredibly dull. It was large, about the size of a Grarrl's tooth, or maybe even a Jetsam's, but Tod had seen his fair share of Jetsam teeth at the bottom of Kiko Lake, and this wasn't shaped anything like one of those.
A few moments later, Lucas returned.
"Thank you so much," he said to Tod. "You might have saved my entire business."
"No problem," the Lutari answered. "Hey, come look at this. What do you make of it?"
He passed the tooth across the counter to Lucas, who promptly dropped it on the glass top of the showcase.
"Careful!" Tod chided. "Those are expensive." He rubbed the glass with the elbow of his shirt, as though that had radiated out from around the tooth disappear.
"I'm so sorry," Lucas looked down at the damage, but Todd was distracted by something else.
"That doesn't feel heavy to you, does it?" he asked the Aisha. "Certainly not heavy enough to do that."
Lucas shook his head vehemently. Maybe Tod wouldn't blame him for the shattered counter top. "I don't know what that is. It looks like a tooth, maybe?"
But as the words left the Aisha's lips, he realized that he did know what the small object was. Only, it wasn't real. Wasn't supposed to be real. He had told the story to tourists on his boat hundreds, if not thousands, of times....

..."The legend of Kiko Lake," Lucas murmured.
"What was that?" Tod peered at the Aisha inquisitively.
"The legend of Kiko Lake," he repeated with glazed eyes. Tod waved a paw in front of the Aisha's face, but it didn't seem to register. Lucas continued to stare blankly ahead.
"Lucas!" The Lutari raised his voice, perplexed about why the Aisha seemed so distracted. Lucas finally snapped to attention. "That's it!" he cried, turning to Tod.
"Many years ago, when Kiko Lake's population numbered in the hundreds, there used to be giant lizard-like petpets which ferried tourists in their mouths to the bottom of the lake to interact with the native Kikos," Lucas said in one quick breath.
"Wasn't that a fact?" asked Tod, looking puzzled. "You're talking about the Draylox, right?"
"Yes, you're right. The legend is about why the Draylox tours were cancelled. You see, it was said that there was a rogue Draylox," the Aisha paused, staring at the misshapen tooth, which glinted faintly under the dim countertop light.
The Aisha's expression suddenly hardened and his tone turned grim. "He did horrible things..."

"...But," he continued, "no one has seen a Draylox, or even any evidence of one, for hundreds of years."
"Then how can you be sure that this is a Draylox tooth?"
"Don't you see, Tod?" a giant grin broke out across Lucas's face. "If I can prove that this is a Draylox tooth, the popularity of my tours will skyrocket! Neopians love legends!"
Tod could appreciate the impact that would have for his friend, but he still didn't totally understand. "What awful things did the rogue Draylox do?"
"Well, they used their mouths to carry Neopets down to the bottom, and, well...he just...um...this one didn't...well, he didn't open his mouth again."
"I...oh," Tod said, frowning. He changed the subject quickly. "And you want to prove that this tooth came from a Draylox, which haven't been seen for centuries?"
"Well, yeah. It shouldn't be too hard. I have an idea...."

"But we'll need to prepare a few things first. Meet me at the glass bottom boat tour dock in an hour, and bring as much candy from the Kiko Lake Treat's shop as you can carry."
Lucas closed up the shop for the day and gathered up a few things from the store. Most importantly, he found the old book of Kiko Lake Legends that was kept in the back room.
When the hour had passed, Lucas caught up with Tod, who had changed out of his diving gear and was now in a set of broad shorts. He had a large bag filled with treats with him.
"So what exactly are we going to do?" Tod asked.
"Easy." Lucas said, pulling out the book, "We're going to try and call the Draylox. We'll use the old stories here that said how they used to call him and try to replicate it today."
"That makes sense." Tod nodded, "What's the first step?"
"That's the easy part..."

...Tod tilted his head out of confusion. "Wait, what exactly are we going to do here?"
"It was said that a Draylox could be summoned using one of their teeth, and a massive amount of rock sugar," the Aisha replied. "We're going to throw the sugar into the lake, and the teeth into the new puddle of sugar water. If it's actually a Draylox tooth, it'll float on the sugar water and start to glow."
"And if it's not actually a Draylox tooth?" inquired the Lutari, staring into Kiko Lake.
"The easy part is the only part." Lucas grinned at his friend. "But let's hope that's not the case."
The Aisha then retrieved a camera from his sack and turned it on. "If it glows, we're going to photograph the glowing before retrieving the tooth, and we'll have proved the Draylox legends once and for all!" He rubbed his hands together greedily. "And renewed interest in legends means renewed interest in glass bottom boat tours which means more business which means more money."
But suddenly, fear gripped Tod. "And what if all the Draylox... aren't... gone? What if this summons an actual Draylox?" he asked his friend with wide, frightened eyes.
"Then..." Lucas replied, his eyes wide too -- but out of excitement -- "Not only will people flock to glass bottom boat tours, we'll have the story of a lifetime..."

...Before Tod could react, Lucas grabbed the sack of candy and emptied its contents into the lake.
Both Neopets watched as the brightly coloured candy landed in the water with a collective 'plop'. Some of them began to fizzle and dissolve, causing many tiny bubbles to form underwater. As the bubbles rose to the surface, they vanished with tiny popping noises.
Satisfied that enough sugar had dissolved into the lake, Lucas retrieved the prized tooth from his pocket. He inspected it one last time, then turned to Tod. "This is it," the Aisha declared. "The moment of truth!"
Tod gulped as Lucas flung the tooth into the middle of Kiko Lake. As it hit the water's surface, it promptly began to sink. Within seconds, the tooth was gone.
Lucas crouched by the edge of the dock, tense with excitement, camera held up in anticipation. Tod, on the other hand, felt increasingly nervous.
"Lucas, I don't know about this..."
"Don't worry, it'll be fine." The Aisha tried to reassure his friend. "Oh -- I think it's floating up!" Both pets held their breath as an object appeared to rise slowly to the surface.
Lucas gripped his camera tightly, ready to snap a picture. "Wait a minute," he muttered, lowering the camera. "That's not the tooth..."

… Lucas and Tod both gaped at the object – which was definitely not a tooth – as it vibrated and expanded in the sugary water. The object swelled and cracked along the surface.
“Is that… is that an egg?” Tod queried. His eyes were as large as saucers as the Lutari watched an outer shell break and crack. The tooth-sized object was now the size of a glass bottom boat. Tod glanced at his friend.
The Aisha was grinning from ear to ear. Tod could practically see the dollar signs in Lucas’s eyes. The Lutari jumped as his friend rushed him and began squeezing him in the biggest Bearog hug imaginable.
“Great Fyora! You’ve made us richer than you can possibly dream!” Lucas glanced back at the egg, “Can you picture all the tourists coming here! We’ll have our very own Draylox to usher them around… for an additional fee of course.”
The water in the lake began bubbling in earnest. Foam was sloshing over the side of their boat, and the pair could smell the abundance of sugar lingering in the air. Tod reached for the rail on the boat as it jostled in the water. Lucas sat laughing like a mad sea captain.
“Come to me, my pretty little Draylox, come say hello!” the Aisha shouted into the tempest of bubbles and waves.
Tod glanced out not seeing the growing object any longer through the froth. He was getting sea sick, a much unexpected feeling for one used to the water. He slid to sit on the floor of the glass bottom boat. He could hear Lucas clicking away his camera, his cackles echoing in the Lutari’s ears. A large shadow passed under the bottom of boat, knocking the far side and sending the boat reeling.
The Lutari was tossed into the sugary waves. He dove to clearer water, settling to the bottom of the lake to settle his churning stomach. Tod could taste sugar on his lips from the water.
A shadow fell over him. He glanced up and almost gasped at the large sight in front of him. A Draylox cast an inquisitive gaze over him before it swam to the surface and leaped out and landed with a bubbled splash back in the water. The curious creature looked to Tod as if to play, so the Lutari swam and circled the large beast. Tod could hear the giggles and felt the air leaving the Draylox’s mouth as they began to swim together.
The Lutari went to touch the petpet, when it stilled and darted away through the lake, casting Tod into a turbulent current of sugary bubbles. He swam back to the surface and called to his friend.
“Lucas,” he shouted, incredulous to the sight he had witnessed, “Did you see that?”
He heard his friend crying as the Aisha shuffled to the edge of the boat.
“The Draylox…” he lifted his camera, “It soaked my camera… *sniff*… my film is ruined!”
“Lucas, C’mon! We’ve seen a Draylox in the lake for the first time in recent history!” The Lutari paddled over to the ladder on the side of the boat.
“But what evidence will we have to prove it! Why would the tourists believe me without PICTURES!”
Tod shook his head, “They don’t call you the best tour guide in Kiko Lake without a reason. You can spin tales better than anyone.”
The Lutari opened a bin for a towel, “Besides, we can always try again tomorrow with more sugar confections.”
With a sniff, the Aisha looked despairingly back to the center of the lake. “Yes… tomorrow.” Lucas wiped his nose. “Do you think the tourists would like a Draylox searching tour? Sell the confections on the boat? Maybe up-charge them for the sweets…”
As Lucas rambled on, Tod chuckled. The Aisha would be alright. Tod looked out to the lake as well, hoping this bit of legend to turn the ordinary Kiko Lake, into something extraordinary.
The End.
