Story One-Hundred and Twenty Ends March 21st
"Breakdown in sector three... breakdown in sector three..."
the computer said, sirens and lights flashing.
"Oh dear, the vending machine in Neopia Central is broken down again," Telia sighed.
"I guess we'd better go fix it... again," her companion, Zylu, added, shaking his head.
The two alien Aishas turned the ship's controls to head towards the world of Neopia. They were known as the best vending machine repair crew in the quadrant. With good reason, too. They could fix just about anything.
"Entering atmosphere above Neopia Central now," the yellow Aisha, Telia warned.
The green Aisha, Zylu, braced against the turbulance.
Suddenly, the ship's wing hit a bit of space debris, ripping a hole in the aerodynamic ship. Instantly, the heat from the atmosheric entry began burning the wing right off!
"Oh no!" shouted Zylu, "We'll crash for sure!"
"Brace yourself!" Telia shouted as the ship spiraled down.
* * * * * *
"Wake up Telia... wake up!" The yellow Aisha opened her eyes to see Zylu standing over her. "Thank goodness you're awake!"
"Ugh," replied Telia, slowly sitting up. "Where are we?"
"Well luckily, we landed on the outskirts of Neopia Central," Zylu explained, "but we need to get to the vending machine to send an S.O.S to the mothership. The transmitter in our ship is broken even beyond even our repair."
"How are we supposed to get to it? We are supposed to not be seen," Telia reminded him.
"I guess we'll just have to blend in. Let's take off our helmets, I believe the atmosphere here is tolerable," said Zylu, carefully removing the bubble-like space helmet.
"Oh, alright," replied Telia, doing the same.
The two Aishas carefully hid the remnants of the space ship under some brush, before heading to a nearby street.
"Just act natural, like you're a pet," assured Zylu, "they'll never notice a thing..."

..."Let's hope so!" Telia replied.
They walked into Neopia Central. Something wasn't quite right. Both of the Aishas looked around. It was deserted... that's what was wrong!
"What happened?" Zylu said suddenly, breaking the silence.
"I-I don't know," Telia answered, finally taking her eyes off the astonishing sight. They walked over to the Vending Machine.
"Oh my!" Zylu sheriked. "It's torn apart beyond belief! It looks like it's been..."
"Broken into..." Telia sighed.
"How did you know that?" Zylu said, astonished.
Looking away from the Vending Machine, they noticed that it wasn't only the Vending Machine that was torn apart. Rows and rows of other stores like the Food Shop, and the... both of the Aishas gasped. "The Bank!!" Zylu cried.
They quickly ran towards the bank. As they got closer, the Alien Aishas started to hear voices. Zylu looked at Telia and put her finger to her mouth, signaling to be quiet...

...they peered through the gaping hole where the doors of the National Neopian Bank once stood. In the middle of the half-demolished room, sitting on a huge pile of NP, was a grotesquely obese Drackonack crunching away on a golden Nerkmid token!
The two Aishas could not believe their alien eyes. The creature was hideous, and much larger than any Drackonack ever seen on the plains of Meridell. With its set of pointed, glistening fangs, the Drackonack soon made short work of its meal, leaving only bits of jagged gold lying around.
Zylu covered her mouth with a paw. "Wha-what is that... thing? By the seven moons of Neopia, I've never seen anything like it!"
"Shhhhh!" Telia hissed. "He'll hear us... let's go!"
Telia turned to flee, dragging Zylu with her. However, in her haste, Telia accidentally stepped on a rubber duck that was laying on the floor. The rubber duck emitted a high, thin squeak...
The Drackonack looked up at the sound. Spotting the interlopers, the creature gave a great snort and lumbered to its feet, sending a cloud of currency fluttering into the air. It stood facing the two Aishas directly, and Zylu thought she had never seen anything so terrifying as its luminous, fiery-red eyes.
A split second passed, followed by the thud of a heartbeat... then, with an earth-shattering bellow, the Drackonack charged! "RUN!!" Telia screamed.
They ran, faster than they'd ever run before in their lives. Past the shambles of the Neopian Hospital and the Pharmacy, beyond the Petpet Shop that had been ripped open; past the NeoLodge that looked as if a bulldozer had crushed it, and the Back to School Shop, which was now, erm... on spring break. All the while, the thundering of hooves and snorting of Draconack breath behind them never ceased. "In there!" Telia gestured at a broken structure ahead of them. The Aishas dashed madly towards it, over a battered sign on the ground that read, "Welcome to Kauvara's Magic Shop"...

...Zylu and Telia collapsed against the remains of the front counter, panting hard. The Drackonack was about a head taller than the Aishas and, thank goodness, couldn't fit through the twisted doorjamb.
"We're safe!" rejoiced Zylu, but a hideous grinding sound stopped him in the middle of his caperings. The Drackonack's teeth were now making short work of the building's front, widening the door-hole so he could get through and examine his prey.
"Correction--we're DOOMED!" said Telia, her voice trembling.
"Well, surely there's a back way out of the shop that's not caved in. Hurry, through that door," he gestured.
They dashed through a curtained doorway into the stockroom. Shelves and shelves of morphing potions and softly glowing Faeries loomed around them. Some of the bottles had been broken by the vibrations from the destruction outside, and yellowed scrolls lay soaked in liquid among shards of glass.
The two Aishas were carefully making their way toward the door when, out of a shadowy corner, a voice called out, "Psst! Don't go out that way..."

..."What!" Zylu whipped around. A striped Shoyru was crouching in the shadows, but he rose
and stretched his wings. The Aishas stared in surprise.
"You should know that," the Shoyru said with a suspicious glance. "They always hunt in a pairs, the other
will be waiting for you out that door. There's a window, over here. Follow me." He vanished into the gloomy
interior of Kauvara's wrecked store.
Zylu and Telia exchanged mystified glances and followed, finding him crouching on the window ledge. But the
window was far, far up. Zylu eyed the distance with dismay.
"How are we supposed to get up there?" he hissed. "We can't fly!"
The Shoyru made a gesture of impatience. "Use the shelves."
Zylu looked at the shelves. He didn't trust them to hold his weight. Back in the ship, everything
would have been made out of steel. He sighed with sudden homesickness.
"Hurry, hurry! The door won't last for long." The Shoyru was obviously agitated.
And indeed, there came a horrible screeching sound from the front of the shop, with the Drackonack's
bellow of triumph accompanying it. Zylu paled. It sounded like the creature had ripped the door
right off its hinges.
"Now!" screamed the Shoyru.
Zylu and Telia were up beside him before he could say another word. The Shoyru shot out of the
window like a bullet, the Aishas following after. They hit the ground and were up on their feet
again in seconds. Something heavy and determined hit the wall.
"He doesn't have the sense to go around," the Shoyru said, calming down. "He'll try and break
through the wall. It'll give us time to head to the cave."
"The cave?" echoed Telia.
"Yes, the cave. Where the survivors are."
Survivors. Zylu didn't like the sound of that word.
They followed the Shoyru past the ruined shops, The Money Tree with most of its branches torn off,
The Rainbow Pool with its water splashed all over. Zylu shuddered at the damage to a once
beautiful place.
Then they headed out past the Bazaar and the Marketplace, which were also in shambles. Out in
the forests there was a cave, hidden deep where the Drackonacks could never find them.
The Shoyru led them in. A small group of starved-looking Neopets huddled there, looking at the
newcomers with wide, frightened eyes. The Shoyru turned to Telia and Zylu, a forced smile on his face.
"I'm sorry, I should have introduced myself sooner," he said quietly. "I'm Merlin. I'm kind of
our leader."
"Merlin," echoed Zylu faintly. "What... happened? To the rest of you? And Neopia Central?"
Merlin shook his head sadly. "The Drackonacks have the others. We think they're going to eat them,
but not yet. We're planning a rescue attempt." Merlin turned to the survivors with a fierce pride shining
in his eyes, then looked back at the alien Aishas. "Will you join us?"...

..."Uh, we... can't." said Zylu, but Telia gave her pal a quick jab with her elbow to silence him.
"Of course we'll help you!" she exclaimed, not looking a bit scared. Zylu frowned at her, but she ignored him.
"Okay then," said Merlin, "we still have a few details to work out in our plan, but we'll be ready by tomorrow evening, when it's dark."
"Why does it need to be dark?" asked Zylu, shivering. He wasn't very fond of the idea of going out fighting Drackonacks in the dark.
"We'll lose for sure if we attempt to attack them during the day. Drackonacks can't see very well at night, and therefore are much clumsier." said Merlin, nodding his head.
As the day wore on and it became cold, a few of the pets started a fire. Everyone huddled around it, trying to stay warm. After supper, which was only a few crackers each, Merlin stood up and tapped two sticks together.
"Attention!" he shouted in a commanding voice, hushing the small crowd instantly. "We need to discuss the last bit of our plan tonight. You, over there," he pointed a stick at a Cybunny, "tell them of our plan so far."
The Cybunny cleared his throat. "As you know, we plan to attempt our rescue at night, when the monsters are settling down for the evening. We're going to need disguises, and here is what we'll use..." the Cybunny pointed to a pile of leaves and cloth.
"How will that help us? It's just scraps of useless junk." Telia pointed out.
"Ah... but Drackonacks have a keen sense of smell, and the perfumed cloth and leaves will detract our smell, adding a normal smell that the Drackonacks are accustomed to."
Merlin stood up. "So you see, we still need some kind of attack weapon... right now, all we have are some harmless sticks and forks. Those will do nothing against the huge monsters."
Zylu thought for a moment. "I know!" he exclaimed without thinking, "We can use our ship's broken parts for weapons!"...

...Telia's eyes widened as she realized Zylu's mistake. Merlin cocked his head curiously.
"Your... ship?" Merlin inquired. Zylu gulped as he realized his slip-up. He exchanged uneasy glances
with Telia.
Telia recovered quickly, grinning widely, "Yes! Our ship! Technically, it's not ours--um... w-w-we...
found it. Yes. We found it." She shut her mouth, nodding to convince herself and Zylu just as much
as the others.
Within minutes, Merlin had organized a plan to quickly snatch the potential weapons without being
noticed. They would travel in partners and transport as much as they could back to the cave,
then return and repeat. Wearing disguises, of course.
Zylu and Telia were fascinated. Never had they seen a group of Neopets so supportive of each other,
so willing to offer help, even in such hard times. As they scurried back to the cave, their arms
full of weapons, Telia whispered, "These creatures really are quite amazing."
After an hour or so of toil, Telia and Zylu had managed to put together several unique devices that would
hopefully stop the Draconacks.
With all the preperation complete, the pets huddled together in the cave. Darkness would soon fall, and
it would be time to execute their plan. Merlin paced about the mouth of the cave, his silhouette
in the eyes of the silent group. What could they do but wait?
More tension mounted the air with every passing moment. Finally, as the stars were at their
brightest in the midnight sky, Merlin stopped his fidgeting and nodded. The pets were ready
for battle, and they moved with the silence of time as they creeped one by one out of the cave...

...Neopia Central was dark and quiet. Too quiet. Telia shuddered and moved a
little closer to Zylu, her gaze scanning nervously over the buildings. It
almost felt like unfriendly eyes stared back at her, invisible in the dark.
Zylu spoke for both of them. "I don't like this," he whispered. "It's spooky!"
Merlin turned and raised a finger to his mouth. "Sssh!" he admonished. "The
Drackonacks are keeping the other Neopets prisoner in the money vaults under
the Neopian Bank. That's where we're headed now. Please, try not to make any
noise, and follow me as quickly as you can."
The ragged group of Neopets strung out behind him in single file. Creeping
cautiously through the buildings, every so often Merlin would stop and listen.
At those times Telia could a hear a sleepy snuffling noise, like some large
animal snoring while it slept.
Merlin spoke up then, confirming her suspicions. "The Drackonacks are asleep!"
he whispered. "Let's hurry and rescue our friends while they're still out cold!"
Finding the Bank proved surprisingly easy. Almost too easy, Telia thought.
But... if their luck had been good so far, who was to say it would change now?
The money vaults were actually a series of huge doors set into the walls of
the Bank, leading to underground chambers where all of Neopia's neopoints lay.
Merlin motioned for the group to stop. "Spread out," he said. "Knock on the
doors, but do it quietly. If you hear an answering knock, come get me."
Telia chose a door on the left side of the wall. Setting down her weapon, she
knocked on it cautiously. Knock... knock... knock. No answer came. Feeling
discouraged, the Aisha began to move off when, very faintly, she heard an
answering knock. It was so faint, only someone with six ears could have heard
it- but Telia was, after all, an Alien Aisha.
"Merlin!" she called. "They're in here!" The Shoyru came running, with the rest
of his ragged band close behind.
"Really?" he said excitedly. "That's
excellent!" Picking up Telia's forgotten weapon, he banged on the door three times.
For a long moment, nothing happened. Then, stronger than before, came
another noise. Knock... knock... knock... three knocks. They had found the
prisoners at last!
"Wonderful!" Zylu said. "But how are we going to get them out?"...

..."Leave it to me!" Telia whispered, and then whipped what looked like
a pen out of her pocket. She hit a button on it, and a small but
powerful lazer came out. She aimed at the hinges of the door, and one by one they
were broken.
"Wonderful!" Merlin cried. "Where did you get that thing?"
"Internet!" Telia replied with a smile. Zylu gave her a warning look, but
not for long as he knew he had to save the prisoners.
Merlin ran into the room that Telia had unlocked to see hoards of Neopians
laying down, doing nothing.
"Oh no! Are they-" screeched a Gelert who had walked in with Merlin.
"I don't think so. I believe they are just sleeping," Merlin said while
checking one of their pulses. "Yeah, they're just sleeping."
"Then who knocked on the door?" Zylu asked suspiciously.
They turned around to see a small little Drackonack with a wicked smile
on his face. It sat on top of an unconcious Kacheek that must have been
the one knocking.
"Shoo!" Merlin whispered, but it had no effect whatsoever.
"He must be the guard!" whispered Zylu. "What should we do with him?"
"I'll take him on!" said a bold Ixi. "I took on many a Drackonack
during the war! Let me have him!" The Ixi stepped up to the Drackonack,
but before he could even lift a hoof, the little beast let out a horrible
scream.
Suddenly, moans were heard from scores of other Drackonacks...
then the walls started to shake.
"They're coming!"...

...the awakened Neopets began screaming. Some were crying, pleading for help,
while others were huddled closely together as the walls began to crumble
and the floor shook with a terrible force. Telia and Zylu, however, remained ready.
"Everybody stay calm!" shouted Merlin. He repeated it again, but to no avail.
Then he screamed at the top of his voice. He'd obviously not realised how loud he
had shouted, because he looked surprised as the rest of the unconscious Neopets
started to wake.
"What's going on?" asked a Kyrii as she looked up.
"What's happening?" pondered a Blumaroo aloud.
"Where are we?" asked another.
By now, everybody was frantic. The left wall had completely caved in.
Dozens of deep red, evil eyes glared at them through the dust. An Usul screamed
and backed away into the far corner.
Then the other wall collaped. Pieces of the wall flew everywhere. Dust was stinging
their eyes, and clogging their throats and noses. The
Drackonacks were advancing on them. The horrid Petpets paced forwards, trapping
every Neopet in the middle of the small room.
Merlin shouted at the top of his voice, "Get ready to attack! Raise your weapons!
Use all the energy you can muster! We can do it!"
The armed Neopets raised their weapons; Merlin raised his, as did Zylu and Telia.
Suddenly Telia glanced at the weapon she was holding. It was a lazer. Why didn't
she think of that before?
Within seconds, Telia raised the lazer and shone it in as many Draconacks' eyes
as possible. A Drackonack fell to the floor in agony covering his eyes, then
another, and another. Everyone gasped in amazement and dropped their weapons.
Telia was doing it on her own. She was defeating the Drackonacks one by one,
and with ease.
Soon she was left with only the Drackonacks on the opposite wall. She shone her
lazer into each of their eyes and they too fell to the floor in agony.
"Well done!" shouted Zylu as he clapped his hands around her. "I didn't think we
would--I mean... you would be able to do it!"
Everyone started to applaud Telia. Neopets were cheering, some were crying with
happiness, others laughing with pure joy.
"Ahem!" It was Merlin. He was standing in the centre of the room with a serious
expression painted upon his face, staring at the Drackonaks.
"We need to decide what to do with these filthy creatures."
Everyone thought for a moment or two. Soon enough they thought of a plan.
"The Chia Police will be arriving any minute then," called Merlin as everybody
waited eagerly for them to arrive.
They didn't have to wait long. The regrouped Chia Police had arrived, at least a dozen of
them all carrying a large net. They hoisted the Drackonacks into the net,
and soon had them captured. No sooner had the Chias left that they could hear the sirens
blaring as they drove off towards the distance.
"Telia, Zylu," cried Merlin as he bowed down to the Alien Aishas. "How can we ever
thank you?"
The Neopets then decided to check in at the Neopian Hospital. It was recommended
that they stayed the night.
"We really need to find a way to get back home though!" said Zylu. "And there's
something we need to tell you, Merlin."
Merlin followed the Aishas to a secluded area of the hospital's main entrance.
Telia gulped hard and glanced at Zylu, who looked just how she felt... scared.
"We're aliens," she blurted. "We're not from Neopia, and our ship... it's damaged
beyond repair. We can't go home."
Merlin didn't looked surprised or angry at this news. Instead he smiled.
"It doesn't matter what you are. You helped us all. Without you... we'd all be
goners. It just so happens that I'm a pretty good mechanic, and there is plenty of
scrap metal from the busted buildings. Your ship will ready at dawn."
Both Aishas' hearts filled with happiness. They smiled at each other and then
went to bed to get some well deserved rest.
Next morning seemed to have arrived pretty fast. Telia and Zylu made their
way to the ship. They gasped. It was as good as new. Every Neopet they had saved was
gathered around ready to give the Aishas a decent send off.
"Thank you for doing this!" cried Telia as she hugged Merlin tightly. "Thank
you all! We'll come back soon to visit- with a replacement vending machine!"
They waved goodbye as the spaceship rose slowly into the air. With a flash they
were gone.
Merlin and the Neopets then began to rebuild Neopia Central. They felt they
could do this; now that Telia and Zylu were a part of them, they could do anything.
The End
