It was another beautifully sunny day on Mystery Island. Larry the Pink Lenny stretched his wings wide behind his back, yawning a little as he leaned further back into his beach chair under the shade. He really should’ve gone to work by now, but he was currently feeling way too relaxed to move even an inch from his current position.
Why would he choose to move around, serving customers under the heat, when he could choose to just do absolutely nothing instead? It was definitely not a hard decision to make. The thought of getting fired briefly flitted through his mind, but it was hard to care too much about that when he could feel sleep starting to overtake him---
SLAM!
The sudden noise jolted him out of his nap. Eyes flinging wide open, he looked around in panic, wondering what had happened when his eyes landed on a sight he could barely believe. Right there on the beach was…. |

...A giant molten rock, sizzling against the sand around it. Larry took a few tentative steps toward it, however, the waves of heat were enough to keep him away. He knew he'd get burned if he touched the boulder.
"But where did it come from?" the Lenny murmured, looking around.
His eyes settled on the most likely source: Techo Mountain at the very center of the island, was billowing thick, dark smoke.
"Oh I feared this day would come. I had hoped it would not be in my lifetime," a voice behind Larry lamented.
The Lenny jumped and turned around to see a Kyrii behind him - the Island Mystic!
"What do you mean?" Larry asked. "Doesn't the volcano just... do stuff like this? It is a volcano after all."
"You don't understand, you haven't studied the omens as I have," the Kyrii continued in his agonized voice. "This can only mean one thing: the volcano is angry at us, and this is its warning. If we do not appease it, all of Mystery Island will be burned to ash..."

Larry broke out in cold sweat, despite the heat of the fallen magma rock near him. The island was his home, and the thought of losing it was too much to bear. He would miss the feeling of sunshine on his feathers so much! The more he thought about it, the more he started worrying.
"The entire island?" he asked, his voice starting to tremble. "How are we supposed to calm it down, then?"
The Mystic looked up at the volcano, and shook his head. The smoke clouds slowly filled up the bright blue sky, covering up the sun. Flying petpets fled from the falling smoke to hide under nearby palm trees. Something definitely needed to be done about it, and fast.
"There is a way," he muttered pensively, his hand on his chin. "But it's going to be a very tough challenge indeed... yes."

Larry looked around anxiously. A tough challenge? He felt as though this was someone else's job, but all around him was chaos and nobody was stepping up to the plate.
"What kind of challenge? What can I do to help?" Larry asked hesitantly.
The old Kyrii shook his head slowly, thinking. "Yes, yes, you can help. But this is not something you can do alone. You must find Jhuidah the Island Faerie. Are you sure you're up to this challenge??" He asked.
Larry had no choice. He must save his beloved home. "I am sure. I will do anything. How can the Faerie help me?"
"She will help you create a mixture that you must throw into the volcano... but hurry. I must go now, there are other matters I must take care of! Run now and find her! She will be at her melting pot unless she has already fled!" He said quickly, and before Larry could ask what kind of mixture he had to make, the Island Mystic had vanished into the bushes.

...Larry dashed to the melting pot. "Jhuidah!" he called out to the Faerie, just as she seemed ready to fly off.
"I'm sorry," she called back before spreading her pink wings. "The melting pot is closed until further notice."
"No, wait!" He ran up to her, puffing from the exercise. "The Island Mystic sent me to you!"
Jhuidah's demeanor changed from worry to curiosity. "Did he? For what?"
The Lenny shrugged. "He talked about making a potion or something to quell the volcano."
The faerie just gasped. "The Potion of Calming? But that normally takes a week to prepare adequately."
Larry's face flattened. "And we have a day." He paused. "You have nothing on reserve?"
"Impossible to do. You see, for six days, one ingredient at a time must be added to the melting pot, and on the seventh day the last ingredient is to be added... but the brew goes bad on the eighth day," Jhuidah explained. "However, I do have all ingredients on hand but that last one."
"I'll find it while you start mixing the potion! Maybe, instead of by the day, you could do it by the hour?" Larry suggested.
Jhuidah smiled. "I admire your enthusiasm... You know, that might just work, but the batch won't be exceptionally strong. But if you bring a perfect specimen of the last ingredient -- the most important one -- maybe, just maybe, it'll work." She grinned. "Let's do it!"
The Lenny grinned back at her. "So what is the last ingredient?"
"Well..." she swallowed. "There is a Doughnutfruit tree at the mouth of the volcano that only produces fruit when the volcano is angry. You must go there, and pick the most perfect fruit you can find..."

He felt his heart skip a beat at the thought of being at the very mouth of the volcano, his grin fading away. Just being on the island was perilous now, but to be at the very mouth of what could possibly doom the island?!
"Isn't there another tree away from all the lava?" Larry asked in a worried but somehow hopeful tone, only for Jhuidah to shake her head.
"I'm afraid not. The Doughnutfruit requires a constant source of extreme heat to grow, so only at the mouth of the volcano can they grow. And only one has grown fully." She responded solemly, her wings fluttering. "Now, we don't have any more time to waste talking. Go, and hurry!"

Larry knew this was a matter of urgency, so he hurried into the distance with thoughts of dread and doom rushing through his mind.
Before he knew it, the Lenny was shadowed by the giant volcano and as he looked up to see the thick volcanic smoke, he gulped.
I can do this, he thought to himself as he started to walk up the steep edge, leaving foot prints in the small layer of ash that coated the volcano.
By the time he knew it, he was half way up.
Looking down to see the tiny palm tree dancing in the wind, he lost his footing and slid a small distance down the volcano.
This is when he realized he need to fly to the top.
Although Larry wasn't a confident flyer, he stood up and began to bat his wings, waiting for the perfect gust of wind to take him.
After a few seconds of waiting, the Lenny was finally in flight, speeding up the volcano, when suddenly...

... the volcano rumbled very loudly. Larry could hear the viscous hot lava bubbling furiously as he soared towards its mouth.
Without warning, an enormous boulder overshadowed him. The Lenny swerved out of the way in the nick of time, barely avoiding the searing mass as it plummeted towards the ground below.
He breathed out an audible sigh. "That was close!"
After a few minutes, Larry finally reached the summit. Thick clouds of smoke spewed out relentlessly, making it hard for him to breathe and see. He coughed a lot despite holding his breath and his visibility was close to zero.
Then, by a stroke of luck, the Lenny suddenly spotted a tree coated in ash swaying gently ahead of him. He gasped in shock at what he saw, for attached to one of its branches was the largest Doughnutfruit he'd ever seen in his entire life ...

"Wow," Larry could not help saying aloud, as he strode over to the tree. Steam and heat from the volcano's mouth enveloped him as he picked his way across the rocky summit.
When he arrived at the base of the tree, Larry plucked the plump Doughnutfruit from its branch as delicately as possible. Its skin shone brightly in the sunlight. He could not admire the sight for long, though; he was on a mission.
There was no time to waste.
Larry scrambled back down the face of the volcano, in an awkward half-running, half-flying haste to reach the ground.
Then, as fast as his legs could carry him, he hurried back to Jhuidah, as the ground shook beneath him... How will this story end...
