“Mutant Day is approaching,” Rucksee the Wocky signed and squatted. “And I still am far from my dream to become a mutant.” As nobody answered, she raised her eyes to the rest of the gang. Scuttell the Lenny was too busy trying to remove his Millipod which clung on the metal wall. The squad leader, or so she liked to think about herself like that, Starphani the Grundo paced back and forth in front of the Neocola Centre. Her Mechanized Laboratory Assistant was following her every step.
“If you ask me,” with a heavy gasp Scuttell finally removed his petpet from the wall. “the mutant-ish look is a temporary trend. Before you know it, everyone will either be chocolate or halloween.”
“In that case why has being green never been a trend?,” Rucksee said and moved a bit to the side. Her petpet C430 Autobot was trying to tidy up the floor where she sat. “Hey, buddy, set down for a minute. Soon we are going to work.”
Starphani, holding onto the suspenders, came to her colleagues. “Where is he? Where is Bertde with his Vacumatic 9000?” The Grundo ranted while looking around The Virtupets Recreation Deck. “He knows perfectly well that intermissions between battles are short but we have to hurry up to clean the arena.”

"Coming, coming!"
The squeaky voice of Bertde the Blumaroo, along with the whirring hum of his Vacumatic 9000, made the rest of the gang roll their eyes. Bertde was always late, but never failed to make a dramatic entrance.
As if on cue, he tripped over his Vacumatic and landed in a sprawling heap on the floor, tail in the air.
"For goodness sake," Starphani said, helping him up and then returning to stare at the Neocola centre. "Where have you been?"
"You wanted this place clean," Bertde pointed out, brushing himself off. He nodded at his Vacumatic to be quiet and then frowned at the Neocola Centre. "We're not seriously here again?"
"It's Mutant Day soon," Rucksee said.
"Oh, Rucksee," Bertde groaned. "This isn't one of your many attempts to obtain a transmogrification potion, is it?"
Scuttell grinned. "I've already tried telling her, Bert. There's no point dissuading her. She does this every year."
As if to prove this, Rucksee emptied her backpack on the ground in front of them. Dozens upon dozens of Neocola tokens littered the floor, in various colours.
"We'll each try different combinations," Rucksee proposed. "We can do this."
Before Bertde could protest any further, the click of the front door to the Neocola Centre alerted everyone to the fact that it was now open for business.
"Are we ready?" Rucksee asked.
The others nodded, and they all went inside...

Rucksee divvied up her tokens and for the next three hours the group of friends took turns inserting tokens and choosing various combinations of flavour and red button pushes.
Finally, Rucksee pulled out the last token. "I guess I gotta start saving up again for next year." she sighed, "There's pretty much zero chance I'm getting a transmogrification potion on the last token"
"Cheer up!" Starphani said with a grin "Maybe an amazing new colour is even now being brewed up in the Rainbow Pool, maybe it'll be even better than Mutant."
As Starphani was blithering about new colour possibilities, Rucksee dropped in the red token half heartedly, leaned on the button for Dehydrated H20 and pressed the red button
One,
Two,
Three times.
"You know what Star?" Rucksee said, turning her back to the machine as it rattled and clanked an item out, "It doesn't matter if there are a million colours at the Rainbow Pool, all I'll ever want to be is mutant. Furthermore - for goodness sake Scuttell, why do you look as though you just had a run-in with the Pant Devil?"
Scuttle couldn't find the words so he simply raised his wing, pointing toward the item slot of the Neocola Machine...

Rucksee turned around and let out a gasp. Sitting in the item slot was a bottle that appeared to have a dark green colour to it with what appeared to be a tongue sticking out of the front.
“I-I-I can’t believe it,” Rucksee said. “I must be dreaming. Not only is this a transmogrification potion, but it’s for a Wocky!”
Everyone was happy that she finally had the luck after so many years to get a well-deserved potion.
Rucksee lifted up the potion in the air and just stared at it, basking in its greatness. Words could not express what was going through her head.
“We should do a countdown,” Scuttle said. “Let’s countdown from ten and then you can take it!”
“I like that!” exclaimed Rucksee.
So they all started the count down, “ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one…”
Rucksee took out the cork and held up the potion, ready to take a drink.
“Gulp, gulp, gulp,” the potion was drank.
“How do you feel?” Scuttle asked.
Before she could reply, Rucksee began to change. Her fur began to change but to everyone’s surprise, the potion did not turn Rucksee into a mutant. Instead, it turned her transparent!
“I don’t understand?” Rucksee hesitantly said aloud. She looked closer at the potion and noticed dark green paint rubbing off on her paws and the tongue she had originally saw on the bottle fell off as if it was taped.
“Let me explain,” a voice said. Rucksee turned around. It was Starphani. How will this story end?

"I just couldn't live letting you turn mutant when you could be so much more Rucksee, you could be transparent just like me," said Star.
"what are you talking about Starphani? Wait, is this your fault?" Rucksee felt betrayed.
"I'm sorry Rucksee, I just didn't want to be the only one," Star pointed as she grabbed a piece of cleaning cloth and started to rub paint off of her skin, removing colour and revealing a transparent skin and visible bones underneath, Starphani was in fact transparent.
Everyone was surprised! They never noticed, how long had Star been transparent?
"Please Rucksee, just give it a try, maybe you like to be transparent more than mutant?" begged Star, but Rucksee was still incredibly angry and started to rush out "I can't believe you did this to me, I thought you were my friend!" she yelled on her way out.
She started crying and looking out the window of the virtupets station, when her reflection came to focus, translucid and skeletal, she felt surprised and amused all of a sudden... She liked how she could see her beating heart and how spooky she looked, maybe she was a little harsh on Star. After all, it isn't like she couldn't just drink a transmogrification potion again if she didn't like to be transparent.
She returned to the group where Starphani was crying, thinking she had lost a friend with her lie.
"I'm not angry at you Star," said Rucksee as she came back She gave her a hug, "but you should have told me."
Starphani stopped crying and felt relief "Would you still have taken it if I had told you what it was?"
"Yeah I guess not, but hey I kinda like this new look," Said Rucksee giving a turn to show off. Everyone smile and was happy for her, especially Star, who was no longer afraid to be the only transparent gal around.
Sometimes, things aren't what you think they are, and get so fixated on what you want that don't realize the answer is much more "clear" than you think.
The End,
