Story Six Hundred Eighty Two Ends Wednesday, November 26

"Good morning!" Serri sang out as she sailed into the Soup Kitchen. She felt cheerful and lighthearted, as she always did when volunteering as a helper for the Soup Faerie.

The Soup Faerie looked up from her cauldron and gave Serri a smile. "Good morning," she said. "Why don't you get the bowls ready for me?"

Serri nodded and bounced over to the cupboards, where she began unloading bowl after clean bowl onto a tray. The Soup Faerie never allowed anyone to touch her enchanted soup pot, of course, or peek into her jars and canisters of magical ingredients, but there were still things that the helpful Lutari could do: bringing clean bowls out to be filled with soup, carrying dirty bowls back to the sink (which had a charm to automatically clean and dry them), handing out napkins, wiping up spills where a clumsy baby Neopet dribbled soup on the floor, and keeping the line of hungry 'pets orderly and quiet as they waited their turn. It was hard work, but it made her happy to do it. Other Neopets might idolize the mystical Faerie Queen, the mysterious Space Faerie, the strong Battle Faerie, or the glamorous Fountain Faerie, but the faerie that Serri wanted to be like more than anyone else was the humble, generous Soup Faerie.

Serri bustled about, setting up bowls and folding napkins -- and enjoying the rich, delicious smells rising from the Soup Faerie's pot -- until it was time for the Soup Kitchen's doors to open. She then settled back on her hind paws, ready to greet the first hungry 'pets with a smile.

However, when the door creaked open....

...Serri saw there were more Neopets than she was used to. Yes, the Soup Kitchen was pretty popular, but there were probably hundreds of hungry Neopets out there. Suddenly, the Lutari feared that there might not be enough soup for everyone.

"I really hope you have enough," Serri said.

The Soup Faerie walked over to the door and looked out at the hungry Neopets. "Oh, there's no need for that, Serri," she said. "Come with me. I'll show you something."

The Soup Faerie led her to the room where they fed the Neopets. There was the famous cauldron that held all the soup that was to be distributed to all the hungry Neopets.

"I charmed this cauldron," the faerie explained. "It won't run out."

Serri peered over the rim of the cauldron and asked, "Are you sure about that?"

The Soup Faerie looked into the cauldron to see that there was no soup in there...

..."Oh no, the charm has run out! This hasn't happened in years!" The Soup Faerie dropped to the floor to look at the inscriptions that enchanted her cauldron. All the light that had once glowed through the magic script had dimmed to hardly a spark. "It will take me a while to get the magic back up and running, but by then..." She looked out the window to the hungry Neopets.

Serri looked around anxiously, then said, "There has to be something we can do!"

The Soup Faerie sighed, straightened out her back, and clapped her hands, "Of course there's something we can do. We're going to make soup the good old fashion way." With a flick of her wrist, all of the cupboards in the kitchen opened, revealing a stockpile of vegetables and spices.

"Do you think that will be enough?" Serri nervously asked as she saw the line of Neopets grow longer.

"No... unfortunately, this won't last all day. It would've in the past, but nowadays there are so many Neopets who need my help." A fire lit in The Soup Faerie's eyes. "We can do this! I will have to be working on enchanting my cauldron again, so that means you will have to cook."

"Me?!?" Serri shouted, flustered. "I've never cooked for anyone in my life!"

"Well, today you're going to learn how. It's not like working at kelp or anything -- soup is a beautifully simple meal to make. I've got all of the old recipes still in here somewhere." The Soup Faerie dug through old papers to reveal a tattered book with a humble cover...

...and Serri reached out to grab the thick volume.

"Wow!" the Lutari grunted as she dropped the heavy book on the table with a thunk. "There must be a thousand soup recipes in here!"

"A thousand and one, to be precise," The Soup Faerie said absently as she gathered supplies she'd need for her cauldron enchantment. "Everything from Mulligatawny to Cornupepper!"

"Which one should I make first?" Serri asked the Soup Faerie. "There's way too many for me to choose from on my own."

"You can start with some Negg Soup, I think," the Soup Faerie said thoughtfully as she tapped her chin with her index finger. "Yes, definitely Negg Soup. It's a simple recipe, with only a few ingredients."

"Great!" Serri said excitedly. "I can't wait to get started! I love learning new things."

The Soup Faerie grinned broadly. "I'm so glad to hear you say that, because I really have to get to work on this cauldron." She turned away to prepare the items she needed to strengthen the charm on her cauldron.

"Wait!" Serri cried, panicked. "I can't just start from scratch, especially since I've never cooked anything before!" She stared at the Soup Faerie, wide-eyed in horror.

Just then the two heard the telltale tinkling of the bell that hung over the back entrance of the Soup Kitchen. The Lutari and the Soup Fearie both turned and saw a...

"Wow, it looks like I'm the first one here this morning!" the Usul said.

"Actually we're not open yet, but we could certainly use your help," the Soup Faerie said to the Usul.

"Oh, anything Miss Soup Faerie! Anything for you," the blue Usul said with a smile.

"Thank you, dear one. I need you to help Serri over here make some soup," the Soup Faerie told the Usul while motioning over for Serri to come forward.

The Usul looked a little confused but followed Serri to the back of the kitchen.

"I know this may seem a little unorthodox, but our magic cauldron of soup is temporarily out of order," Serri said.

"Oh my! That is terrible, just terrible. I'll help you as much as I can. My mum and I cook dinner together every night. It looks like what she has taught me will be of some use here," the Usul replied.

"That is wonderful news. Thank you, uhm... sorry, I don't know your name," the Lutari said bashfully.

"There's no need to be sorry, as we've never met before. I'm Fay. Nice to meet you, Serri!" Fay said as she shook Serri's hand.

Serri smiled and accepted the handshake.

"Now, let's get to work so we can feed some hungry Neopians without any delay," the Lutari said as she handed Fay an apron.

As the two Neopets began chopping up some vegetables, they heard a loud boom come from the Soup Faerie's office...

...Serri and Fay exchanged glances and left their work, racing to the Soup Faerie's aid. "Miss Soup Faerie!" they cried, peering in and coughing with the thick pink smoke that filled the office.

The Soup Faerie was sitting on the ground, her bandana askew and her wing bent. "Are you all right?" the Lutari asked.

The faerie slowly nodded. "Mmm... I'm all right." She waved a hand away. "It's just a little spell that went awry, I'll be fine. Go finish the soup. Neopets need you."

Serri's tail switched as she reached for the faerie to help her up.

"Serri, please," the Soup Faerie moaned, struggling to stand with her help. "Thank you."

"Come on," the Usul said, tugging at Serri's paw. "Let's quickly slice up the Neggs, add in the seasoning, and heat everything. You may be helping her, but you also have to respect her."

Serri bit her lip and the Soup Faerie nudged her. "Go on. I'll be okay."

The two Neopets scampered to finish the soup as the entrance bell of the Soup Kitchen tinkled several times.

Leaning back against the wall, the Soup Faerie sighed. "It's only a matter of time before they find out I won’t be refilling the soup pot anytime soon..."

***

"And you simmer the Neggs, putting in the slices very gently, like so." Fay's paw masterfully scraped the knife across the cutting board, sliding the Neggs into the pot with a satisfactory series of plops.

"I see," Serri said, stirring the harmony of spices and Neggs. "That isn't too difficult after all!" she cried gleefully, sliding in more Neggs in a rudimentary imitation of Fay's cooking.

"Come and get it!" Fay cried to the poor Neopets who entered, serving them with a ladle.

"Fank you, Miss!" a young Kacheek chirruped, his cheeks bulging with Neggs. He thrust his arms around Serri and then Fay. "Can I help with the soup next time?"

Serri and Fay exchanged glances again. "I think we'd have to ask the Soup Faerie about that. Go check on her." Fay gave the Lutari a gentle shove.

Without complaint, Serri ran to the faerie's office, as her worries regarding the faerie had been on her mind for a long time.

"Ms. Soup Faerie?" she asked timidly and pushed the door open a crack.

"You really did it, didn't you?" The faerie beamed at her and embraced the Lutari. "I'm so proud of you!"

Despite the warmth in Serri's chest, she had to persist with her question. "Are you okay? A small Kacheek wants to help make the soup next time."

"Never better!" The faerie's smile flickered slightly, although her wings were healthy and her bandana and hair were in their proper places. "Listen... the magic that refreshes the soup pot... it's gone. I can't make it by myself anymore." She put her hands on Serri's furry shoulders. "You and whoever is willing to help can make the soup whenever you like. I just had to sit out to let you handle it on your own, and you did it beautifully!"

"But... you're magic! Are you sick? Will it come back?" Serri hovered over the faerie nervously.

The Soup Faerie smiled sadly. "Don't worry about that now. It will return if and when it decides to. For now, let's continue to feed those who are hungry. I will come with you."

Serri nodded and happily strode out of the door, feeling like the luckiest Lutari alive.

The Soup Faerie lingered in her office for a moment, cupping one hand over the other. A smile crept across her face as small pink sparks emanated from her hand.

So long as Neopets helped other Neopets, no one would have to know.

The End
