Reisto was moping around in the garden, bored as can
be. He had his sad face on. "I wish I had a brother, a little Lupe baby brother...
but obviously that isn't ever going to happen," he said to himself.
His owner prided herself on her beautiful garden, spending most of her time planting new
flowers, so she she didn't have enough time for another pet, and would constantly tell Reisto,
"Baby Lupes are dirty little things that like to dig in gardens! There's no way we can get
one." All of this made Reisto very upset...

...The next morning, after waking up to a Beekadoodle shriek in the distance, he decided
to walk himself down to the local pound. He knew that he would have no problem getting out
of the house because Beatrice, his owner, wouldn't even notice. She was always in the darkest
places of her garden. After finishing breakfast (a simple meal of orange juice and banana roll)
this blue and white Lupe trotted down the block to the pound. On the way, he greeted the fellow
Neopians and always had on a smile. Soon, a tall, white building came into view. THE NEOPIAN POUND,
it said in big black letters. As soon as Reisto stepped into the pound, he knew that today
was the day he would get his baby brother, but he would have to figure out a way to hide it
from Beatrice (of course he would figure all that out later). So he confidently trotted to the
nearest cage...

...It was very dark, so Reisto had to squint very hard to see what was in the cage. Still,
he could see a small dark shape but nothing more. He edged closer the bars of the cage. He had
heard horror stories about pets getting their noses bitten off my crazy creatures in the pound.
But Reisto swallowed his fear and stuck his nose between to bars to get as close as possible.
The dark shape shuffled into the furthest corner of the cage. Reisto sighed.
"Please come out, I won't hurt you." He grinned at the little shape, which was now shivering.
It was no use. Clearly this pet wasn't the right one to become his baby brother. Reisto removed
his nose from the bars, turned, and began to trot out of the pound. Right before he reached the
door he heard a small voice cry, "Wait!" Quite surprised, Reisto turned to see the biggest,
saddest eyes he had ever seen peering at him through the bars of the cage.
"Please don't go," It murmured, "I-I've been waiting for you..."

...Reisto was surprised when he heard this sad creature speak. But not only was it waiting for
him, it was a little Lupe pup!
"You have?" said Reisto, dazed and confused. "But how?"
"Yes!" cried the Lupe, "I heard you saying you wanted a Lupe to be your baby brother and
I was sure you would come for me. I will be good and quiet so Beatrice won't find out. All
you have to do is keep me company and bring me food."
"Okay," said Reisto, "We can be best friends! But I stil don't know how you knew I was
coming for you."
The little Lupe stuck its nose between the bars of the cage, licking Reisto right on his face.
"Don't ask so many questions," he said, giving Reisto a little wink...

...so deeply touched by this little act of kindness, Reisto completely forgot about the
little pup's knowledge of Beatrice. As the nice Uni let the small yellow Lupe out of the cage
Reisto realised how little he knew about his new friend.
"What's your name?" Although feeling really silly about asking the question, this was one of the
things that Reisto needed to know about his new little brother.
"Gonfolon," he said. Gonfolon hugged closer to Reisto as a mean, angry Skeith whirled its
snarling head from between the bars, ready to swallow Gonfolon whole. Gonfolon had tensed up
every muscle in his body as they walked towards the door.
"Is everything all right?" Reisto asked, deeply concerned about his new younger brother.
Younger brother, the thought warmed Reisto inside and out.
Gonfolon shivered. "No, no. Everything's fine," he hurriedly spit out as he quickened his pace.
Gonfolon certainly wasn't all right--he was shivering like crazy. Something had spooked him,
and Reisto was going to find out. Perhaps it had something to do with him knowing about
Reisto and Beatrice...

...Reisto led the way back to Beatrice's house. But half way there Reisto realised that
Gonfolon wasn't watching where he was going, he knew the way to Beatrice's house like he
had been going there his whole life.
"Gonfolon, you seem to know your way to my owner's house, how do you know such things?"
"Like I said before brother, don't ask questions that you know you won't get an answer to."
He gave a sly smile and kept on walking, shivering all the way there.
When they got to the house, Reisto quietly led the way to the kitchen. He got a basket and blanket
out of a closet.
"You will have to sleep in the basement tonight, Gonfolon, I am sorry...."
"Thank you," Gonfolon whispered. He was shivering worse than ever now. Reisto got another blanket
out of the closet and set it on him...

..."Are you feeling sick?" Reisto whispered as he led Gonfolon down to the basement.
"No...not at all..." Gonfolon whispered in a raspy voice. Even with two thick blankets on,
Gonfolon was still shivering... Reisto noticed that his shivering had gotten worse...
Reisto turned the light on in the basement for it was really gloomy in there. Even with the
light on, it was still pretty hard to see where you were going. Reisto opened a closet and
got two thick long pieces of a cotton blanket. "This will have to be your bed until I talk
things out with Beatrice... I'm sorry," Reisto said as he laid out the blanket on the floor.
"That's okay, I had to sleep on paper in the pound, this is actually a specialty for me,"
he said, giving Reisto another sly smile and a nice lick across the face.
Reisto was just about to leave when he started to have brainstorm about what he would say to
Beatrice when she found out about Gonfolon. She'll go ballistic! "Uhh..." Reisto murmured.
"And Gonfolon is sick, too..." Riesto thought aloud.
"Am not!" Gonfolon yelled. Gonfolon closed his eyes again. Riesto walked up the stairs and
Gonfolon whispered to Riesto with his eyes shut, "What do you think will happen to me?"
Riesto walked back down the stairs. "I don't know..." Riesto replied.
"What's going on down there, Riesto!?" It was Beatrice! The doorknob wobbled...

..."Oh no!" cried Reisto! "Get completely under the blanket!"
Gonfolon did as he was told, and Reisto gently sat on Gonlfolon. The door opened.
"What is that?" asked Beatrice. She was coming over to pull the blanket out from
under Reisto. Reisto knew he would be in big trouble for what would probably seem
like the rest of his life! The thought made him start crying.
"What? What? What?" asked Beatrice?
Reisto thought fast.
"Sniff... this was... sniff... just going to... sniff... be a present for you!!!"
"Oooooh" said Beatrice, " Let me have it!
"No!" Reisto said... "later."
Beatrice grumbled and left.
"Ooof" said Goloflon, what's the big idea?"
"Good news, and bad news. The good news is that you are safe, the bad news is that we
have to find Beatrice a present as big as you, and... we have nothing to buy her present with,
I spent it... all of it on you...

...Gonfolon reached deep into his fur and produced a single coin. "This is all I have,"
he said. Reisto took the coin and examined it. It was a Neopian five-cent piece.
"A little Poogle dropped it near my cage when she was leaving the pound," explained Gonfolon.
"This is my whole fortune."
Reisto sighed. He felt bad for the pup. "Thanks," he replied, "but I'm not sure what we can buy
Beatrice with only 5 Neopoints.
Gonfolon nodded slyly again. "I once met an old Jubjub in the pound. He said that he had been
abandoned cause his owner didn't like his favourite hobby: Gambling."
"Are you suggesting we gamble?!?" cried Reisto, shocked by the idea.
"Not exactly," replied Gonfolon slyly. "See, this old Jubjub had one favourite game. He played
everyday, but he wasn't very lucky and soon he had put his owner in debt. He told me all about his
favourite game. It was cheap to play, but you could win big. Wanna know what the game was?"
"What?" asked Reisto quickly, eager to learn the answer.
"Dice-A-Roo."
Reisto looked at his watch...

...he guessed that Beatrice would be puttering around in the garden for about half an hour.
Tight schedule, Reisto thought, but if we're quick, we might make it back in time!
"All right, shorty, you're on!" he said in a low tone, "We just need to be quick and cautious."
Gonfolon nodded, his face set, but was shivering more than Reisto had seen him yet. He was
getting worried. What was wrong with him?
Quietly, they managed to sneak from the house, and out of the garden without a hitch. From
there, Gonfolon led the way to the Dice-A-Roo table.
Reisto saw the 5 dice and groaned.
"Whazamatta?" Gonfolon asked; the words were running together in his surprise.
"I don't like dice games. Last time I tried one, I lost so horribly Beatrice chewed me out
for an hour. I've got NO luck with these."
"Aw, don't worry. I AM luck," Gonfolon said slyly, with that grin returning.
"I hope you're right, 'cause if we get too gung-ho with this..."
"Just trust me; I know what I'm doing."
Reisto wanted to try and stop him, but he needed 2 things: an argument and a reason. But he was
still worried; he had notoriously bad luck, to the point of chance games he even watched bombed
so badly it was embarrassing. But, Gonfolon supposedly had good luck, though if he did,
would it be enough?
What's the use anyway? I couldn't stop him with a supernova and a frost cannon... Reisto
thought as his brother picked up the red die, and gave it a good, solid toss into the air. They
both watched the cube meet gravity, and plummet back down to the table...

..."Okay it's 5 pm right now," said Riesto. "We have 2 hours before Beatrice usually calls for
me to eat, so we have to sneak in, and play just a couple, until we have the money for Beatrice's
gift!"
Then Gofolon started to shiver again.
"I don't know what to do about your shivering, almost like you have the Shaky Flakys. That
can be extremely dangerous. We have to tell Beatrice," said Riesto. "We have to go to the
Dice-A-Roo thingy. But I don't think its a good idea to take you. Stay here under the blanket
and sleep."
"No Riesto, I have to go with you," said Gofolon.
They walked all the way until they saw a big sign: DICE-A-ROO. As they walked in hoping they
would win the fortune.
"Yes!" we got it, the fortune. I love you Gofolon!" screamed Riesto. "Now we have her present of
a lovely gold lipstick, so let's hurry back!"
The next morning, Riesto worked long and hard how she was going to react to this news.
"Mother," screamed Riesto. "Come down here please!"
"What, I'm going to be late!" yelled Beatrice.
"I have your present here," Riesto told Beatrice.
As he handed her the gold lipstick he also made Gofolon visible to her.
"It's him again," said Beatrice.
"What? This is Gofolon. I adopted him, and what do you mean him again?" asked Riesto.
"Tell him, he deserves to know the truth," little Gofolon spoke up. "I was disowned by Beatrice."
"You were too young to remember Riesto. Yes, he's your younger brother. Before I got promoted in the
guild, I had to choose which one to disown... because you were my first pet, I choose you. After my
promotion I went to the pound the day after you went, to get him back, but it seems you have beat me
to it. Dr. Death said he was adopted a day ago, and I cried hard that day because I made a terrible
mistake to send Gofolon to the pound, and I knew he had Shaky Flakys, too. But now that he's back, I
won't be disowning him anymore," said Beatrice. "Come on, I'll call in sick, let's go to cure Gofolon."
Beatrice, who was once crying, was now smiling, while putting on her gold lipstick. She held Riesto's
and Gofolon's paws. They stopped by the pharmacy. After applying the cream he would be okay. The three
held hands and skipped back to their house. They would all sit down as a family and eat a real turkey
dinner. Gofolon would get to sleep in a real bed.
