We start a story and you have to write the next few paragraphs. We will select the best submissions every day and put it on the site, and then you have to write the next one, all the way until the story finishes. Got it? Well, submit your paragraphs below!

Story Eight Hundred Three Ends February 9th

Lowing lanterns hung from the ceiling, while the 'hmms' and 'whirs' of heavy machinery could be heard from every which way as Atticus walked within the city of Moltara. Steam peaked out from the steam grate in the middle of the circular stone path, while the Brown Blumaroo headed to Molten Morsels for some Fire Rice and a Potato Shake. He wiped the sweat from his brow, work had been extra tiresome today. He was a few strides away from the restaurant entrance when he heard the mechanical noises stop, right as the lights went out... ...He heard some shouts from around him. "What's going on?" one voice cried, while another - probably a small child - began to whimper. It was impossible to see - the entire upper city relied on its power supply for all its light, and it was blocked off from the lava caverns below.

Atticus stood still as a stone, wondering what to do next. He was no hero - just an ordinary employee at the local steam-works. What could he possibly do at a time like this?

Just as he was considering whether to try moving, a strange sight approached: a collection of flickering lights, swinging as if they were being carried by someone. Eventually the lights came close enough to figure out what was going on: it was Lampwyck, carrying a whole pile of lanterns.

Atticus approached him...

"What's going on?" Atticus asked, walking towards him with fast paces.

Lampwyck said nothing but handed him a lantern, just as he did with the other Neopians that came to him. Quiet murmurs of 'Thank you' echoed through the silent city. The once loud city of machines was now startlingly silent and there was a sense of dread among the Neopians.

Atticus shone the lantern and watched as Lampwyck silently walked past him, handing out lanterns as he went. Lampwyck stepped onto a pedestal and held up the brightest lantern over him, attracting all attention towards him. With a clear voice, he spoke out loud, his voice echoing through the silence city.

"Keep the lanterns with you at all times. We have a crisis going on in Moltara. Fyora has been notified and will arrive soon with the Light and Fire Faeries. Until then, stay together. Do not go off into the darkness without a light."

"What happened?" a Neopian cried.

Numerous voices followed, crying out the same questions of confusion mixed with worry. With a wave of his hand, Lampwyck quieted them all.

"It is gone," Lampwyck said with a grave face.

Atticus stared at him. What was gone? He wondered...

...suddenly, Atticus's eyes snapped back into focus. The Red Obsidian Stone!

"Do you mean the Stone?" Atticus asked amongst hushed voices. "The Red Obsidian Stone that powers the city?"

"Yes," Lampwyck said. "Someone has taken it."

Shock echoed among those looking on, then the questions started flowing:

"There's only a handful of Molatarans who have access to the core--"

"Could it be one of the tribes?"

"But why would someone take it--"

"There's one more thing," Lampwyck said, still unable to meet the eyes of his audience. "The Mayor has also disappeared. He was last seen heading into the caves to speak with Igneot about an urgent matter that we don't have information about. He has yet to return, meanwhile the Stone has disappeared."

Atticus spoke up, "Is there any chance that whoever did this will try to tamper with the the Core that stabilizes Neopia?"

"That is the concern," Lampwyck said. "We've put guards there to protect it - but in this darkness, nothing is certain."

"What are we going to do then?" The crowd echoed out. "We can't just sit here and wait around!"

"Precisely..." Lampwyck said.

"We need to send a search party for the Mayor and Igneot. They may be able to help us find a clue. It'd be best if we spread out." This plan seemed to appease most of the masses, garnering a few nods. The Buzz then pointed at one of the many tunnel entrances in the eastern wall of the main cavern. "They were last seen going through there, this will be our starting point."

Atticus was handed a bag of mining gear and a lantern. Going into caves was nothing new to anyone here, but they had yet to fully explore a lot of the underground passages. With a determined face, he picked a random pathway, followed by others. The Blumaroo held his lantern high as he began his trek into the endless darkness...

...he heard a parade of footsteps echoing throughout the tunnel system, the blackness thicker than the air he breathed. Atticus picked a random tunnel, but he knew what he was looking for. Even members of the tribe set markers down, engraved within the cave walls to ensure they wouldn't get lost. These markers were encrypted, however - and only a member of the tribe would be able to discern their meaning. But this was something to go on at least -

"Ow!" Atticus's foot collided with something hard and dull jutting out of the ground. He shined his lantern on the object and his mouth fell agape.

The Stone!

But how did it end up here? Atticus thought. That's one piece of the puzzle, with more questions than answers at this point. Atticus picked the stone up and put it in his pocket. "This must be the way then. How lucky is that?"

Whether it was pure chance or purposely placed there - Atticus would soon find out.

The deeper into the tunnels he weaved, darting between cryptic symbols and guides, the more the pit in Atticus's stomach seemed to swallow him whole. Should he go back? Should he press on? The priority was to ensure the Core's safety and restoring power with the Stone is vital to that. Maybe there's--

Atticus stopped. There's something here.

Moving faintly in the darkness. He couldn't see it, but he could hear it wriggling along the ground heavily, grunting - Atticus shined his light on the source of the noise, fear swirling inside him.

"Mayor!"

Atticus approached the bruised and muddied Moltaran, who had been gagged and tied down. His eyes were wide, something of pure panic resided there as Atticus unbound his struggling body.

"Mayor-"

"You need to go back!" The Mayor said, as soon as the gag was free.

"What?" Atticus froze. The pieces were slowly clicking together.

"We've been tricked!"

The mayor's eyes widened - "Watch out!"

Atticus wheeled around just in time to see a Kougra's large paw trying to swipe at him; he dodged deftly out the way, barely. This must have been the villain who kidnapped the Mayor! There was no time to waste - he didn't want to leave the Mayor here tied up, but all of Neopia was at stake. He had to take the stone and bring it back to the city.

He raced off back down the tunnel system - the Kougra in toe - darting down alleys and trying to confuse his pursuer. Unfortunately he was matching him move for move, and nothing Atticus did seemed to shake him. Worse still, the Kougra's four legs were faster than his two, and he was gaining ground fast! Atticus rounded another corner, and was met by... a dead end. He turned round slowly and stared into the villain's hungry yellow eyes.

"I've got you now!" the Kougra growled.

Atticus' heart pounded for a moment... and then his eyes darted upwards. There was a glimmer of inspiration in his eyes for a moment. "Alright... don't hurt me," he pleaded innocently. Meanwhile, he'd placed his tail firmly on the ground, tensing his muscles and preparing...

BOING! Before the Kougra could react, Atticus had sprung into the air and onto a ledge above. "No!" the Kougra cried, trying to follow - but the rock was too slippery, and his claws couldn't get purchase. He snarled and growled as the crafty Blumaroo slipped away.

Atticus heard voices nearby - he was almost at the surface! He made a sharp left, a right, another left - and he was out! Lampwyck was already back with several other members of the search party, and they were swift to react after Atticus shouted a few instructions to them. They ran back into the caves, following the Kougra's enraged cries so they could find and arrest him. Panting heavily, Atticus unfurled his hand to reveal the stone to a very surprised (and relieved) Lampwyck.

It wasn't long before everything was returned to normal. The Mayor had been rescued and brought back to the surface, and the stone was returned to its rightful place - light was restored to Moltara. The Kougra had been caught and sent to jail, though he refused to reveal his motives for stealing the stone.

The Mayor - after he'd recovered - came to greet the heroic Blumaroo who'd saved their city. Lampwyck asked him the question they all wanted to know. "What happened? The last we'd heard, you were going to meet with Igneot - please say he wasn't in on this?"

"No, no. It was a trap - one that I foolishly fell for. I received a note, supposedly signed by Igneot. It told me to meet him in the caverns and bring the Red Obsidian Stone - an urgent matter, it said; the whole city's safety was at risk... When I got down as far as the tribal cave markings, I knew I'd been tricked - Igneot wouldn't have directed me so deep into the tunnel system where I couldn't find my way out. I worked out that whoever brought me there must have wanted the stone, and they wouldn't be far away - so I dropped the stone in hopes one of you would find it before he did. Luckily, I put my faith in the right city." He beamed at Atticus and slapped him on the back fondly. "Say, how would you like a new job? We could use another engineer working on the Core..." he began, as he steered Atticus away from the gathering crowd. It seemed that life was about to get a whole lot more interesting for Atticus the not-so-ordinary Blumaroo!
