Story Nine Hundred Forty Two Ends Friday, June 23
The game was ready to start. The crowd was murmuring with excitement. The energy was palpable, even under the field. They were here for many reasons, many souls, but nobody could deny there was one that stood out among the rest.
And now it was Ace's time to shine.
The Yooyu readied himself on the platform. He practised his waves to the crowd, friendly grins, ready to be photographed just as the game was about to start. The soft whirr of the gears filled the air as the platform raised. The field opened up just a bit, just enough for the platform to fit in.
The Yooyu reached the surface and looked around.
And the teams were not on the field.
How could this be? Today was opening day! This was the day everybody was waiting for! All of the Yooyus were preparing for this day and the teams were just not here? How unprecedented! How rude! How could they do such a thing?
Not knowing what else to do, Ace waddled over to the sidelines, hoping to figure out what was going on. Either nobody noticed him walking across the field or nobody bothered enough to stop him. After all, the teams were not here, there were clearly bigger issues at hand. A Yooyu wandering around the field paled in comparison.
As he made his way to the sidelines, he overheard the announcers talking. Hovri and Tobias.
"What do we do about this?" Tobias asked his coworker.
Hovri shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not sure. From the looks of it, we might have to cancel."
Cancel? No. No no no no no. That was not going to happen. Not now, not ever.
Ace got back to the platform and stomped hard on it. The platform lowered back into the ground and into the rest area for the Yooyus. They all looked shocked to see Ace back so soon.
"Ace, what's the matter?" asked Frostflake, the snow Yooyu tilting his head.
"It's the most horrible thing!" Ace threw up his tentacles into the air. "No teams are up there! And I overheard the announcers! They said they might have to cancel the entire cup!"
"So what now?"
"What now? What now?!" seethed Ace. "We've trained for this for the past 11 months, since the last cup!" he monologued, acknowledging the other Yooyus in the pen. He clenched his tentacles into fists, which he subsequently shook. "Either those players are lazy good-for-nothings, or whoever took the players are nefarious good-for-nothings. But we won't let those good-for-nothings have their way. We won't let them take away our namesake game!"
"But what can we possibly do?" asked Cukoo, the clockwork Yooyu. They were fiercely intelligent and calculating, but definitely the scaredy Yooyu of the bunch. "We're just Yooyus. Heck, historically speaking, we get stolen or go missing or something at least once a year and the players have to come to find US."
"Well, maybe it's time to repay them that debt!" encouraged Flame. She was a real go-getter, a real firecracker. A fervent fire Yooyu that melted Ace's heart... and left it burned in her wake. "I say let's join Ace on this mission." She raised a tentacle to her head dramatically. "It pains me to think about what our poor players are up to right now!"
"I mean, like, sure, OK," said Sheryl, the faerie Yooyu. By far the ditziest of the bunch, she was also the bravest, having notably little regard for even the most dangerous situations. "I want to play too! Let's do whatever it takes." She flashed her cute smile.
Cukoo gave an exasperated sigh. "Alright, since it sounds like you've all made up your mind... I'm in too. You'll need someone with the intelligence to keep you alive." They gave a self-satisfied smirk.
"Thank you, all of you," Ace replied with a grin. "I knew I could count on you! You all have different skills that would be very useful to our mission." And he meant that: Cukoo was scared but intelligent, and their tendency to explode and reassemble themself could be useful in combat; Flame was hot-headed and excitable, brilliant at interrogation, though would maybe land them in hot water; and Sheryl was ditzy but brave, and could fly better and higher than the rest of them combined. And, of course, there was Ace himself: a natural leader, well-rounded, and altogether balanced (though he oft feared that balanced meant boring) -- which made him perfect to be the lead detective on this case.
With this team, nothing could get in the way of them figuring out what happened to the Altador Cup teams... |

“First off,” Flame said, smacking one tentacle into the ‘palm’ of the other, “we need to figure out who has a motive here? Who’s fired up to delay or cancel the games? Find the motive, and find the culprit!”
Cuckoo said, “We need leads first. I say we search for evidence and find witnesses.”
“Those sound like good ideas,” Sheryl said, “but I think there may be magic afoot here. How could all the teams just... vanish? Without even the announcers knowing where they went? We should contact an expert in mystical arts."
“Whatever we do,” Frostflake said, “we should think carefully and take action without being too hasty or rash. Who knows what we might be stepping—or rolling—into, here?”
The other four all looked at Ace. “Those are all good ideas,” he said. “But we have to start somewhere. Which should we do first?
Flame’s eyes widened. “I have just the idea!” she said. “Cuckoo’s right, we need more information before we can reallly get started on any of these leads. And I know just the Neopet. Someone who’s at every game--”
“The announcers?” Ace asked. “They didn’t seem to have any clue either.”
She shook her head. “Let me finish. At every game, at every practice, at every off-season pick-up game, everything, he’s always there, all through the Months of Hunting and Relaxing. He shows up for the pregame show and stays until they basically shut down the stadium.” The other four Yooyus looked at her in confusion, and she said, “I’ll give you a hint. You could never miss his constant presence... unless you didn’t have ears.”
“Of course!” Cuckoo said, bouncing excitedly up into ball shape before unfolding again. “The Techo Fanatic. You’re right, he’s around more than most of the coaches and players, even. If anyone saw something suspicious, it’d be him.”
“Great idea,” Ace said. “Just two problems. First: how do we find him? I don’t even know his real name. Does he have a real name? Where does he live?”
“That’s easy,” interjected Frostflake. “I overheard some fans talking about him. I don’t know his name, I don’t think they did either, but apparently most of the year, he lives in a big fancy mansion that doubles as an Altador Cup museum. Got a butler and everything. I bet he’s there when he’s not here watching. Shouldn’t be too hard to find—after all, it is a museum.”
“That’s solved, then” Ace said, rubbing his tentacles together. “One more problem. We can understand the Neopian language just fine, but as you all know, for whatever reason Neopets can never understand us when we talk. They just hear Petpets making noises. How are we going to interview anyone when they don’t' know what we’re saying?”
Sheryl flapped her wings, gently turning a midair somersault. “Oh, as to that,” she said. “That’s where my idea comes in. Here’s what I think....”

"We are not using interpretative dance," Flame snapped. The fire on the back of her shell leapt a foot into the air. Frostflake tumbled backwards. Flame's annoyance faded just long enough to shoot him an apologetic look. Fire and ice so rarely got along, but that didn't mean these two had to be enemies. They were a team, united in their passion for the sport.
"Why not?" Sheryl whined. "It's perfect! We can be one in mind and soul." She always had been rather open-minded. Well, she called it being open-minded. Other people might have worded it as "prone to hijinks."
"Because it's ridiculous. How is anyone supposed to know what we're trying to say?" Flame, however, was as practical as she was fiery. She wanted solid answers starting yesterday!
There was a ticking sound. Everyone whipped around to face Cuckoo, who flashed a mischievous grin. It was their favorite trick. "I think it might work. Or something like it, at least. The Techo Fanatic is in the stands all day, every day. It gets loud up there. Don't your ears ring after one game? How do you think he gets through the whole season?"
The rest of the Yooyus exchanged glances. Cuckoo waited until they could stand it no longer. Their tentacles spread out in a "behold!" gesture. "I bet he uses some kind of sign language."
"So he's the perfect person to talk to," Ace filled in. "We don't need words. We just need a different language."
Sheryl beamed at Flame, because Sheryl had been technically correct, which was the best kind of correct. Flame sighed. "Okay, okay, you win." It always stung when she overshot her target.
"I usually do," Sheryl preened. As always, she was rewarded for her roundabout way of solving problems.
"Okay," Ace hurriedly cut in. He wouldn't let competition get in the way of, well, a bigger competition. The Altador Cup was at stake. No in-fighting allowed. "That's one less thing we have to worry about. We'll workshop our strategy on the way." But that presented another problem. They needed to get to the fanatic's mansion before they could interview him, and that meant…

… sneaking out of the Colosseum. The Altador Cup Yooyus were kept under constant watch after past attempts by over-zealous fans to sneak into the Yooyu pens. Some merely wanted to pet the Yooyus or snap a picture with them, while others had tried to smuggle them home. Eventually, the Committee hired a number of Yooyu handlers to guard the Yooyu pens at all hours of the day.
“We need to create a diversion to distract the guards outside,” Ace said to his team. “Any ideas, guys?”
The Yooyus looked around at each other but all remained silent. Then, a small cough from behind them made the group spin around on their heels.
A Mutant Yooyu stood leaning against the back wall of the pen, munching on a handful of Yooyu kibble. He was watching the group with a bemused smirk plastered across his face. Sheryl let out a squeak and shuffled to cower behind Cuckoo.
“I’m really disappointed, you guys,” the Mutant Yooyu said in a gruff voice. “How could you lot plan an escape without inviting me? You know I’m always down for that kind of adventure.”
“Not now, Hyde, we’re busy!” Flame snapped before turning her back to the Mutant Yooyu again.
“It just so happens that I may know of a way out of here,” the Mutant Yooyu teased. Sheryl peeked out from behind Cuckoo, her interest piqued. “But I won’t tell you guys, since you’re all too busy for me.”
“What do you mean, Hyde? You have to help us!” Sheryl piped.
“Sheryl, don’t,“ Ace said firmly. “He’s just messing with us!”
Hyde’s smirk grew ever wider. “Suit yourself! I’m happy to tell you, I just have one condition…”
“What is it?” The Faerie Yooyu asked.
“You have to let me join,” Hyde said. “You guys never let me in on any of the fun.”
The Yooyus turned towards Ace, looking for an answer. He felt stumped. On one hand, he could hardly think of another way to escape from the pen. But on the other, he loathed the idea of having to work with Hyde…
“Do you really know of a way out, Hyde? Do you promise?” Cuckoo asked solemnly.
“Of course!” Hyde exclaimed. “You’re not the only smart guy in this room, you know.”
“Well then,” Cuckoo said, turning back to Ace. “Do we really have another choice?”
Author: vanillastar12 Date: Jun 15th
"It doesn't seem you do," Hyde said with a rather large grin across his face. "You see, the guards aren't the most fond of Mutant Yooyus like myself. One guard, in particular, is very timid and is even scared. He just so happens to be working right now.
Ace stood there pondering what he was hearing. "How had Hyde figured out so much about their pin and the guards?" Ace thought to himself. "Then again, he has never really joined us on anything so maybe he really has had a lot of time..."
"Guys I don't have much more time," Hyde said as he looked at one of his tentacles as if he was wearing a watch. "I do have prior commitments that I can always go back to. Hanging out with you all is much more fun though."
"Very well," Ace said. This shocked the rest of the Yooyus. Sure they really didn't have a choice but Ace was the last Yooyu to side with Hyde. They were bitter enemies after all. "Don't you even think of crossing us Hyde. You will be sorry."
"Oh come on," Hyde said. "I want to escape this prison just like the rest of you. No players means less fun for me as well. You aren't the only ones that like to go out on the field. My passion just happens to be more on the side of confusing the teams on which direction I go!"
"What is our next step Hyde?" Sheryl asked.
Hyde rolled over to the edge of the pin and seemed to be counting to himself. "He should be back from his break by now."
A rather large Wraith Grarrl came from around the corner and eyed the pin, staring at all the Yooyus and then turned his back towards them.
"Uhm, THAT is the guard that is scared of Yooyus?" Snowflake asked very quietly. "He is one of the largest Grarrls I've ever seen."
"You would be shocked my snowy friend," Hyde said with his back towards the rest of the team. "A lot of large Neopets have very unique fears. His just so happens to be Mutant Petpets, Yooyus in particular. On the count of three I will roll against the pin as hard as I can. Once it is broken, the rest of you escape and I will join soon."
Ace nodded in agreement. "Very well. One. Two..."
Before Ace could get to three, Hyde collided with the side of the pin. "It's now or never!"
Author: maculose Date: Jun 16th
All at once came a cacophony with the banging of the bars, the cries of protest from Ace, and a yelp from the Wraith Grarrl as he turned to face the cage. True to Hyde's word, the Grarrl gritted his teeth, and Ace could swear he was shaking.
"I-it's no use," the Grarrl protested as he put on airs of confidence. "The bars are soli-"
BANG! came a sound as Hyde collided with the bars again. He unfurled and looked up at the Grarrl, staring with an intent, maniacal grin.
"Speed it up; do something too!" Hyde declared with an excited glee in his voice. "How 'bout you, Ace? Don't you miss that momentum?"
"S-stop trying to rope me in-!" Ace started.
"Do you want to escape or not? You could protest and stay trapped forever with no games, or we could follow each others' lead. Just like old times," Hyde said with a smirk.
Ace flinched, but his internal debate was soon ceased by a clap on his back from Sheryl. "C'mon, it's not like it can hurt, right? And it’s for the Games."
Ace really didn’t want to do this. Not after what the two of them had done before. But though he loathed it, Hyde was right. And so was Sheryl. If it was for the Games...
"I-It's still no use!" the Wraith Grarrl declared as Hyde hit the bars with another BANG!. "Like I said, the bars are reinforced, I-I don't have any reason to fear-"
BANG! BOOM! FWING! SHHHHH...
The resonance of Hyde's hit and the inexplicable explosion as Cuckoo exploded themself created an opening as the bars dented. Dodging parts of Cuckoo, Ace found his momentum and flung himself up towards the top of the bars. As he did so, he felt Hyde grab his feet. Assured that Hyde caught on to his idea, he grabbed the top of the cage and swung himself forward, flinging Hyde at top speed through the opening in the bars directly at the Wraith Grarrl.
The Wraith Grarrl's screams echoed through the halls as he ran far, far away.
Ace used the rest of his momentum to fling himself out, and the other Yooyus soon followed. Hyde rolled himself flat on the ground, laughing maniacally between breaths.
"Ah, you still got it, Ace! I knew you hadn't lost it entirely!" Hyde laughed.
"S-stop it..." Ace looked away. "We need to go."
"Maybe let's do something less dangerous..." Frostflake mused. "We'll be in so much trouble when we get back..."
"Less talking, more moving!" Flame declared.
"We still need to be careful," Cuckoo said as he finished reassembling. "There's more guards than this, and the Grarrl likely went for reinforcements."
Hyde stood with a grin. "That's why much as I'd like to torment them, we go this way to save our Games and our fun."
Ace sighed. "Lead the way..."
Before too long, and indeed with no further incident, the Yooyus found themselves at the Colosseum's entrance...
Author: gentle_lil_queen Date: Jun 19th
“Alright,” Ace said with as much confidence as he could muster. “This is it, everyone. Our first ever journey outside of the Colosseum. We need to be careful. The museum shouldn’t be too hard to find, but we need to be strategic.”
“Sheryl,” Ace said, nodding at the Faerie Yooyu, “I want you to fly overhead to see if you can spot the museum, but keep an eye on our group as well.” Sheryl nodded, determination in her eyes.
“Flame and Hyde- You two are going to be our offence. I want you to stay ahead of our group and look out for any threats. Us three- me, Frostflake, and Cuckoo- are going to be the strategy team. We’re going to figure out how exactly we can talk to the Techo Fanatic. Sound good, everyone?”
Flame gave Ace a strong thumbs up, but Hyde grew a devilish smirk.
“Awwwww, I can’t be in the planning committee? What’s a matter, Ace, you don’t want me too close to the team?”
“Knock it off,” Ace seethed. “We’re on a mission. We don’t have time for your games.”
Hyde chuckled with a shrug of his shoulders. “Whatever you say, captain.”
“Alright, team,” Ace began again, trying his best to ignore Hyde’s comment. “Let’s roll!”
And so off they went, with Sheryl flying happily overhead and Flame and Hyde in the lead. Ace, Frostflake, and Cuckoo kept close so they could strategize how best to communicate with the Techo Fanatic.
“Do any of us know Neopian Sign Language?” Frostflake asked.
Cuckoo pondered. “I know a few sentences, but I don’t know it well enough to understand it.”
“That’s fine,” Ace assured. “We only need to know enough to ask the Techo Fanatic questions. You mentioned he has a butler, right Frostflake? We can ask either him or the butler to talk to us back in Neopian. Can you ask that, Cuckoo?”
Cuckoo gave him a shy grin. “I think so.”
“Good.”
“And another thing,” Ace continued, bringing his voice down to a whisper so that the other Yooyus had to lean in. “When we get to the museum, we need to be polite. We don’t want to say anything to upset the Techo Fanatic, or he might not want to talk to us.” Ace squinted his eyes at the Mutant Yooyu ahead of him. “Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, but since he’s in our group…”
“What happened between you and Hyde, anyway?” Frostflake muttered, keeping her voice just as quiet. “Why does he get on your nerves so much?”
“Nothing!” Ace grit through his teeth, his cheeks growing red. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
“Yeesh. Sorry I asked.”
“You guys!” Sheryl shouted suddenly, happily zipping through the air. “You guys, this way! I found something…”

...Sheryl pointed a tentacle at a grandiose building on the outskirts of the city limits, nestled right beside the aqueduct.
"Oooooh," the Yooyus marvelled in chorus as they rolled along, following her. They knew that if an Altador Cup museum existed, it MUST have been this building, bursting with utmost splendour.
Real marble columns. A beautiful garden with Yooyu-shaped shrubs. A life-sized fountain of Layton Vickles with water streaming out of its--
"No wonder the Fanatic can afford to come to every game day, he must be loaded!" exclaimed Frostflake.
The Yooyus saw through the large windows that the inside of the museum was even grander than the outside, filled with rare paintings, artefacts, and Altador Cup memorabilia galore. They desperately wanted to explore, but Ace reminded them that they were on a mission.
"Alright," started Ace, "I say we should knock on the door, wait until--"
"Where's the fun in that?" ribbed Hyde. "I say we break in, kick some butler butt first, and ask our questions later."
Ace looked to the Fire Yooyu. Surely she, of all of them, would back him on this?
"I'm with Hyde on this one," Flame started, a tad sheepishly, before a grin spread across her face. "I think a little impulsiveness is just what we need to get to the Techo Fanatic."
Hyde laughed. "Thanks Flameo." He glared at Ace.
The others Yooyus chittered their agreement. Ace felt flushed, and his chest heaved... How dare his bad-blood ex try to come between him and his current flame--
BANG! Hyde performed his trick again, colliding with the hinges on the large oak doors -- they broke easily. Cuckoo, with his great strength, quickly threw the ajar doors further open. With a deft swoop, Sheryl flew inside, the others following close behind.
"And what do we have heeere," said a figure in the foyer. It was the Fanatic's butler -- the Yurble Janitor -- and he did not look happy. He was wearing a chef's hat, he must have been cooking something. "I thought I smelled Yooyus..." he started with a sly raging face. "You got here right on time, the soup's on, and it's just about ready for its main ingredient..." he trailed, his face darkening.
"Ooh, I'll take a borscht," said Frostflake before Flame punched her in the tentacle.
Sheryl put on her cute pouty face. "Whaaat? We're only here to help find the Altador Cup players. In fact, I think we have an an appointment with Mr. Fanatic," she said silkily, but of course her words sounded like little chirpy babbles to the Neopet's ears. "Yurble, if you take us there, we can make it worth your while in... say, tasty drywall?"
Flame sighed and slowly raised the palm of one of her tentacles to her face.
The Janitor's expression remained unamused. "Come 'ere, I gotta get you back to the Colosseum and get my reward!" At once, the chase was on, and he sprung after them through the corridors, his mop aggressively wielded.
"Split up!" Ace commanded. "Distract him! And find Mr. Fanatic's office -- we'll reconvene there!"
The Yooyus soared in all directions, rolling and zipping and flying every which way. Together, they knocked down slushies, lit old team jerseys on fire, and even punched a hole in a very expensive portrait of King Altador that was painted at the first modern Altador Cup. The janitor tried to catch them, and even swung his mop a few times, but to no avail.
"Have you eaten drywall before?" Cuckoo shouted to Sheryl, who soared high above the chaos.
"Of course I have," Sheryl replied as she flew into a bookshelf, sending the books (written by some old staff members) crashing to the ground.
Cuckoo practically rolled their eyes. "Of course you have." And then they exploded, searing and sending the Janitor (and quite a few ultra expensive Altador Cup Prize Shop stamps) back ten feet.
"In her defence -- and I honestly can't believe I am defending her -- the handlers were late with feeding us!" Flame chimed in she set fire to a small collection of potted Altadorian flora.
"I'd have rather taken a bite out of the handlers, haha!" chimed in Hyde as he whizzed past them, having absorbed nearby Sheryl's power of flight.
"Come on everyone, stay on target!" Ace reminded. He and Hyde exchanged unfriendly glances.
"Archibald! Archibaaaald!" whined the butler to his master as Frostflake, who was well behind the others, banged some found Thunder Sticks right in his vicinity. The sticks did 16 icons of damage to the Yurble Janitor and froze him for one turn. "Archibald, DO something!"
The Fanatic, sitting in his office and preparing his voice for the next game, grumbled. There really was an awful lot of noise going on in the museum, wasn't there? He left his office to inspect the damages... And then he gaped. And then he AAAAAAAAA'd, because there was a game of Yooyuball happening in his mansion. IN HIS MANSION. And with almost all the Yooyus in play. SO MANY YOOYUS.
It was his dream come true.
All the Yooyus heard his AAAAAAAAA. Ace was the first to follow the noise, and flew inside the office. Sheryl was able to follow closely behind. Then Hyde and Flame, followed by Cuckoo, and finally Frostflake.
"Communicate with him!" Ace urged his team as he pointed a tentacle at the Techo...

The Techo Fanatic rose to his feet and froze, looking between all of the Yooyus. A tear welled in his eye and Flame shot a glance at Sheryl who had floated down beside her.
“Is he crying?” she asked her whimsical teammate in a whisper.
“Hehe, I believe he is,” Sheryl responded with a giggle.
The room felt otherworldly silent juxtaposed to the cacophonous calamity that came before it.
Ace nodded at Cuckoo to begin.
Cuckoo moved his tentacles, forming two signs: “where” and “team”.
The Techo looked at him in awe. “Where… team?” he said. “Where… Where are the teams? Are you asking about that Altador Cup teams?!”
The Yooyus nodded in unison and Archibald looked around in amazement.
“You… You understand me?!” The Fanatic was in disbelief as the Yooyus reacted affirmatively once again.
“Wow, this is amazing! Truly incredible!” Archibald shuddered with insurmountable joy.
Cuckoo repeated his Neopian Sign Language, adding a “please” at the end.
“Oh! Right,” the Techo Fanatic began. “You know, little ones, I am trying to find the teams myself. I’ll tell you what I know… Throughout practice tournaments, I noticed that teams began to go missing. The practice team would wait and wait and then nobody would show up. At first, I thought it was a fluke. That was when I noticed the trail of melted slushie in the locker room… I’m waiting on a call from an inside source to help solve thi-“
At that moment, the telephone rang…
How will this story end?
Author: i_lovee_icecream Date: Jun 22nd
The Techo Fanatic picked up the receiver. “Hello? Yes. Mhm.” He gave the Yooyus waiting tensely the side eye. “I see. We’ll be right there.” He paused. “I’m bringing some friends.” Then in a whisper, “yes I have friends.”
He hung up quickly and faced the group. “So we’re thinking the teams have been kidnapped.”
“Wow, real genius this one,” Hyde muttered.
Ace shushed him. Good thing the Fanatic couldn’t understand them. “Cuckoo. Ask the Fanatic what we should do now and how do we get them back for the Yooyuball games.”
Cuckoo turned to Archibald, raising their tentacles, then communicated it all in a shrug.
“I need to learn sign language,” Sheryl mused.
“I know where they are,” Archibald continued. “But we have to get back to the stadium. Come on!”
They made their way back to the Colosseum, the Yooyus rolling at top speed and the Techo Fanatic pulled alongside them in a buggy by the Janitor butler who was panting, sweating profusely, and cursing his career choices by the time they arrived back at the colosseum entrance.
Archibald led them to levels below the Yooyu pens, to an area they hadn’t been before. A closed door stood before them.
“Where are we?” Flame asked.
“Look!” Cuckoo pointed to a sign proclaiming this area as the supply room, and before them was a trail of blueberry slushie.
They watched as the Techo Fanatic grasped the knob and threw open the door. In the room stood dozens of cages and inside the cages were Neopets of all species, still sporting their Yooyuball gear from the lands. They looked tired but otherwise unharmed. And in the middle of the room stood a plump Red Tuskaninny, splotches of different colour slushies staining her apron, her hair a frazzled mess.
“I knew it!” Archibald cried. “Cheryl.”
Sheryl fluttered her wings. “Yes?”
“No, not Sheryl, Cheryl,” the Fanatic said.
“So you found us,” Cheryl said.
“Who is that?” Frostflake whispered to Flame.
“No idea,” Flame said.
“Us?,” Archibald asked.
From behind Cheryl waddled a Purple Yooyu, black leathery wings fluttering slowly.
Ace and his crew gasped and twittered madly. “Hendrix!” Ace hissed. “We should have known you’d be behind this too!”
“Hi Ace,” he winked at him and Hyde huffed from behind.
“Why Cheryl?” Archibald asked.
“Because we’re tired of being underappreciated,” Cheryl said through gritted teeth. “I work sixty hours a week. Only one day off. No benefits. Everyone constantly demanding slushies, more, and more, and more. I need part-time employees. I need health insurance.” She looked down at Hendrix. “And he wants a better reputation. He’s not very liked.”
“Agreed. No problem,” came a voice from behind and they all turned.
Hovri and Tobias had snuck up behind them and heard the whole thing.
“Really?” Cheryl asked.
“Yeah its already in the works. Except for Hendrix. Nothing we can do about that. Everyone hates Darigan Yooyus,” Tobias said.
“Can we get back to the games now?” Hovri asked.
Cheryl thought for a moment, then unlocked the cages.
****
Ace watched as the stadium filled with eager Yooyuball fans, all sipping their favourite slushie. The teams were in the locker rooms (he checked four times), preparing for the matches.
“We were a good team,” Hyde said, coming up beside him and offering a slushie. “Truce?”
“I suppose it was fun.”
Ace took it begrudgingly and he didn’t pull away when Hyde slid a little closer as they watched the Colosseum fill up before them.
The End.
