Kidra looked at the Rainbow Fountain, a Negg in her claws. Naia had opened her fountain to Neopians who wanted to try dipping Neggs into the magical water, which looked doubly inviting today, splashing and burbling merrily in a myriad of colours.
"Are you ready?" Naia asked her, extending an arm for the striped Negg. "What do you think will happen?"
The Lutari frowned thoughtfully. "Maybe it'll get a random Neopet colour? But there are so many possible ones..." Then her frown turned into a smile as she handed her Negg to Naia. "Guess there's only one way to find out."
"That's the spirit!"
Naia slowly, gently lowered the into the water as Kidra looked on eagerly. At first, they didn't see any changes. The Negg remained the way it was.
And then Kidra and the Rainbow Fountain faerie gasped at the same time.
"T-The Negg!" the Lutari exclaimed. "It's..." |

..."I think if my fountain did this to a Neopet, I would send them to the healing fountain..." Naia looked extremely taken aback. The Negg had sprouted hair all over in the myriad colours of the rainbow fountain. It looked more like a ball of shaggy, mismatched fur than a Negg.
"It's interesting at least." Kidra's disappointment at the result faded quickly, while it wasn't beautiful, her Negg was now unique.
She took it back from the faerie and stepped away to let the next person go, but the line of Neopets waiting behind her hesitated when they saw the hairy monstrosity Kidra was holding. "Well who's next? You're bound to get something interesting!" Kidra forced cheerfulness as she moved towards the crowd, and behind her Naia put on a practised smile.
"I'll give it a go." A pink cybunny stepped forward and held out his own Negg to Naia. The plain blue oval slipped beneath the waters of the fountain, and the whole crowd pressed in to watch.
For an uncomfortable moment, nothing happened. Then, in a flash of swirling colours the Negg began to sprout hair, just like Kidra's had. Naia's hands trembled as she handed the Negg back to the cybunny, then both turned to the lutari still holding her own strangely transformed Negg.
"There's something wrong with my fountain," the faerie slipped her hands beneath the surface of the water. "But, it doesn't seem any different than normal. What could possibly be wrong with it?"
Kidra walked back over to the fountain and set down her Negg. "Don't worry, we will do everything possible to help you figure out what's going on, and fix your fountain." Some of the crowd had dispersed when they realized the fountain wasn't working, but those that remained nodded and shouted in agreement. "The rainbow fountain will be working perfectly in no time!"
The faerie beamed in gratitude, and all eyes in the group turned towards Kidra. The Lutari wished she was as confident as she sounded. Where to even begin...

...Kidra heard snickering coming from behind the fountain. She turned around to see the cape of a Dark Faerie disappearing behind the clouds.
"Look! A Dark Faerie!" Kidra exclaimed. Naia and the crowd turned to look and, sure enough, saw the Dark Faerie heading towards Faerie City. Kidra sprinted after her, desperate to find out if she was involved in corrupting the fountain.
"Hey, Dark Faerie!" Kidra cried out. The faerie whisked around to look at Kidra.
"What is it that you want, child?" asked the faerie.
"Did you cast a spell on the Rainbow Fountain? Its magical colourful powers are not working properly, and we saw you behind the fountain," replied Kidra.
The faerie chuckled. "Maybe I did, maybe I didn't. Just like a Negg, your answer is hidden." She then disappeared into a puff of purple smoke.
Kidra pondered the words of the faerie. What exactly did she mean...

She returned to the Fountain Faerie, who was unsuccessfully trying to work her magic on the water, her composure slowly breaking as nothing she did could fix it. The few Neopets helping to test dip their neggs lingered around as Naia worked, some were curious, some were horrified, and some were even joking about the absurd neggs.
"You've returned!" Naia smiled feebly when she saw Kidra. "Tell me, kind Neopet, what happened?" The crowd had gathered to listen to what Kidra had to say. "Y-yes, that Dark Faerie lurking around the fountain. S-she was speaking in riddles.."
She explained what happened as the faerie and the crowd listened intently. "Thank you for help", said Naia. "This is all very strange, but it does remind me of that time-", she started before being interrupted by a shriek coming from the bystanders.
The group of Neopets quickly dispersed from something that dropped to the ground. One of the strange hairy neggs seemed to have come alive, its gnarly teeth nipping a poor wocky's paws before gnashing its way into some nearby bushes. Left and right, Neopets who had one of the strange furry neggs left them on the ground and backed away, and sure enough, they all eventually shook to life, chomping ferociously before scurrying out of sight.
All of them, except for Kidra's negg... How will this story end?

"There," Came a voice standing right behind Kidra. Shocked, the Lutari whipped around. It was the Dark Faerie speaking.
"I DIDN'T transform YOUR negg. Happy now?" It was true, Kidra's negg was as normal as ever.
"So it was you!" Kidra snapped, holding the negg away from the Dark Faerie. Naia lifted her tail over the rocks and flopped herself next to Kidra.
"Why, Dark Faerie?" The Rainbow Fountain's guardian demanded. "Why must you spoil such a festive activity with such mischief?"
"Isn't it obvious?" The Dark Faerie replied, picking up one of the scruffy negg-creatures. "You Neopets are always getting shiny, colourful magic that YOU like. I'm doing something for me and my fellow Dark Faeries for once" She patted her negg-creature on the head as it tried to chomp her hand. "And THIS is OUR kind of Petpet!"
As she spoke, an entire group of Dark Faeries swooped down, overjoyed at their new, dishevelled, hairy, eyesore neggs with teeth.
Kidra and Naia exchanged glances, and shrugged. It was a great day after all. Well, for the Dark Faeries. The End,
