Neopia in All Its Glory

by webman88

Well, this article isn't really about anything in particular, just another opinion. It is mainly a review on Neopia from beginning to end. I started playing in Late November of the year 2000. So that means I am approaching my 15th month on NeoPets.

From when the site began to when I started playing, I have no idea what happened so I'll briefly explain it. As I heard, people back then would play Kacheek a seek to gain money. You could choose Faerie Quests and faerie would cost like 20,000 NP.

From when I began to play, the stock market was the best place to gain money. People would artificially inflate stocks as a guild making everyone millionaires, even some billionaires. One person in particular, owned the Money Tree Guild, (my first guild) She was well into the billions and lead many people to be better Neopians, but then the NeoPets staff altered the stock market, many people went bankrupt and frozen. During this time anything could happen. People would be doing thousands of kitchen quests a day, codestones and faeries were 1600 each and you may have been lucky and picked several thousand off the Money Tree. If you asked someone rich, they would probably buy you anything. Everyone was happy because Neopia was a better place back then. I would label this time period as the Prosperous Era.

Then came December, the advent calendar started the chain of the era known as account sprawl. Many people would create many accounts to take advantage of the advent calendar and the Snowager (which gave rarer items back then) My guess is that around one third of the whole Neopia Population are consisted of these multiple fake accounts.

Then early in the year 2001, an event long awaited for changed Neopia forever. The Battledome became an instant success having been long awaited. Not much people knew of everyday weapons such as Hypno Helmets or grand lightning beams. Instead Neopia was flung into a time where discoveries of great importance were to be made. The Battledome caused the collectable items such as tridents, rainbow sets and wines to drop dramatically. The Battledome introduced a new style to NeoPets: Competition.

Well moving into January, we had what I call the Change. The NeoPets staff were very active during this time. Almost everyday there would be a new game or shop opening (why can't that happen today?) Four new worlds were made, the 3 Winter worlds and Faerieland. The first Hidden Tower Item appeared just days after the Battledome, the Cement Mixer. Then came the assorted colours of Faerie Pets and all the games and shops in the worlds. For the Economists, the biggest change here was probably the unbuyable price change. It was 50,000 before, but because many people didn't notice this in time many items such as hidden tower items were bought for 50,000. This change is still in effect these days because many items are priced using the 100,000 Neopoints system.

Tyrannia then came into existence when a huge earthquake ripped apart the Ice caves. As most of you might know the first war that allowed you to fight 1-player opponents happened. I remember spending the weekend to kill 200+ Korbat scouts. Many useful weapons were discovered during the war, such as: Grand Lightning Beam, Black Frost Cannon and the Hypno Helmet. Neopia was safe once again, when k0jir0 defeated the Monoceraptor. But this act alone motivated many players to become better.

The Battledome also had their first league, This brought a lot of commotion and had a huge impact on training pets. I think it was CyberHunter2000 and Hynfaerie that faced off at the end (not 100% sure) but Hynfaerie had become the Battledome Champion and probably still is. But who knows, maybe a purple Shoyru will have her break or maybe the new robotic pets will become the strongest.

Summer came and many people had vacations or played excessively. The lost desert came and everyone had fun fighting off Sloth's minions, though there were quite a lot of players who missed it entirely. Usurper and Coltzan's Shrine were possibly two most expected games.

Then school started again, people went back to work and Neopia became normal again. But somewhere here, whether it was from the fiery gaze and diamond dust change or from the retiring of the first Hidden Tower Item (Rod of Supernova) Players everywhere changed, becoming extremely rich in a short time. The Battledome Chat also became very popular during this time.

Then the next part in Neopia is very depressing. Many accounts were frozen due to illegal acts. Many skilled and wise players either quit or simply had no more time for NeoPets. This list can go on and on and on. Inflation was also taking effect. Hypno Helmets were no longer buyable. Every good way of gaining cash has been downgraded (Switch-A-Roo, Grundo's Gym, Wheel of Excitement, Scratchcards) exception of Restocks. Recently even the stock market has been made so it would be harder to gain cash.

So we catch up to current day. The Future of Neopia seems dim, with Negg prices rising and collectibles dropping. What can you do for Neopia?
