Petpet Name: Killian
Owner: twocents
Pet Name: Debonti
Breed: Island Candychan

About Killian:
I woke up on an island.
That’s how my life started out. I knew I was older, and I was aware that my name was Killian, but everything before that moment was gone. I had looked up and saw the kind eyes of a red fuzzy Neopet, a darling Jubjub named Debonti. With a gesture of one of his large feet and a smile in his eyes, he had led me across the island where I joined him and his family.
The others… were not so important. At least not to me. While I acknowledged Debonti’s brothers and sisters, they didn’t particularly strike me as anyone worth paying attention to. So, Debonti and I frequently left and went on our own. My Red Jubjub and his Island Candychan.
One day, we were playing our favorite game, Coco Roller, which mostly involved rolling coconuts. Clever title, eh?
Debonti looked sad though. I had put down the coconut, crawled up to my favorite spot on his head, and asked him, “What’s wrong?”
He had told me how special I was, and how glad he was that I was part of his home and family. Candychans are rare creatures, he explained, while he was utterly common. He asked me to get off of his head, and I obliged. I looked into his large eyes, while he sadly explained that he wouldn’t mind if I left and found a better, rarer, more exciting, new owner.
Debonti had done so much for me. He took me in when I was unsure of whom I was. Gave me a home when I had none. And even gave me some brothers and sisters, despite me not particularly interacting with them. He had given me his time, patience and loving affection, and I had nothing to offer in return.
And so I left. I remember his wide eyes, hurt but not particularly surprised, as he watched me fly away and leave the island. I remember his brothers, an Orange Grundo and an Ice Quiggle who defied science and didn’t melt despite the warm climate, coming over to comfort him.
I glided toward a city I heard of from Debonti’s story, a grand city that floated in the air. As it came into my sight, I spotted a long line of Neopets, all waiting to talk to one of the grandest faeries, the Fountain Faerie. Bypassing them all, I approached the Rainbow Fountain. I landed easily, and began my approach toward the colored waters.
“Darling Candychan,” the Fountain Faerie’s voice floated to me like music in a dream. “I cannot change the colors of petpets. I’m sorry.” She smiled kindly.
I knew she would help me. I whispered my request in her ear, and she nodded. Disappearing for a moment, I waited anxiously. She came back and nodded. The task was done.
And so I waited.
And I waited.
The pets who went through the line and dove into the waters, all of them garnering grand exclamations from their friends and family, none of them mattered to me.
And so I waited.
Until he came.
And arrive he did. His brothers held the offering to the Fountain Faerie, which appeared to be some sort of stamp, while he dove into the waters.
I attacked him in a hug when he resurfaced, his body changed, but his heart the same. Dark eyes were now hidden in a coconut shell, but my Debonti was still the kind individual I had come to know.
He seemed surprised to see me. “You did this?” he had asked in awe.
I nodded. “Of course. I didn’t care that you were a Red Jubjub, but you did. And I just wanted you to be confident with yourself. I wanted you to feel as happy as you have made me feel.”
And so, I took my spot back upon his head, and we headed back to the island. Together.
