A PetPet Grows Up

by tashni

I was born... I don't know when. I only know that I did not realise what I would go through in my life. I was an only child, a male Krawk PetPet. My Mother raised me well, and she always made sure that I had plenty of food. We lived in Tyrannia in the back of a store. A kind brown and shaggy Elephante ran the shop. Once I was old enough, he put me in the shop to be sold. He barely had started to walk away when someone came to buy me! My new owner quickly took me to his house.

When we arrived, I was so happy to find that my new home was in Faerieland! My Mother had told me wondrous tales about this place. My owner, Ryan, took me to the largest house on the street! He had one pet, a Faerie Aisha named Mike. Ryan fed me, and afterward Mike and I played till bedtime. I decided that I was the luckiest PetPet in Neopia! Mike and I fell asleep in front of the fireplace.

Early the next morning, Ryan scooped me up and put me in a basket, careful not to wake up Mike. I thought that he was taking me for a tour of Faerie City, or maybe even to get painted! But I was so tired, I didn't care and soon fell back to sleep.

When I woke up, I was in a small cage. The place I was in look something like the shop in Tyrannia where I grew up. There were PetPets everywhere, every kind I had ever heard of and dozens more! A green Kacheek was walking around, cleaning the cages and giving all the PetPets fresh food and water. When he came up to my cage he cheerily said, "Hey little fella! How long have you been awake?"

"Just a few minutes," I timidly replied. "What is this place? Where is Ryan? And Mike?"

The Kacheek looked at me sadly. "Oh, you poor, silly little thing. This is Ryan's gallery. You're going to live here from now on." And so began the worst period of my life.

Sure, I had food and water, and my cage was usually clean. But I was never let out! Some of the other PetPets were allowed out for people touring the gallery to play with, but I was so "valuable" that I never got out. People would come up to my cage and stare at me for hours. I was so shy and sad that I would curl up in a corner and stay there until the gallery closed. The Kacheek, whose name turned out to be Sam, noticed me and tried to get me to do things to entertain the guests, but I didn't change. I just didn't care. Finally Sam got so worried that he called up Ryan and told him the situation.

The next morning, Ryan came down to see me. I was in my corner, as usual. He had a very frustrated look on his face. Three days later, he sold me. It was then that the second worst faze of my life began.

My new owner, Becka, immediately put in the trading post. It was there that I realised how greedy Neopians can be. All day long my cage was surrounded by Neopians shouting bids, yelling at Becka for not accepting their offers. A few people even tried to scam her, saying things like, "give me the Krawk and I'll tell you the recipe for Fish Neggs!" But thankfully Becka was too smart to fall for such tricks. She wanted cash, nothing else. Not even me. She didn't give me food or water, or even clean out my cage! But thankfully there was a Techo that supervised all the trades and he cleaned my cage up a bit and gave me some leftover apples or what not in the evening, and filled up my water bowl with tap water every morning. It wasn't exactly Gourmet Club material, but at least I had something.

In the Trading Post I decided that no Neopians were completely good. The majority were plain greedy and selfish. From then on I didn't care what happened to me. I was bought and sold many times. Each time it was the same as with Becka.

But one morning on a particularly slow day at the post, a kind-faced girl with three NeoPets at her side walked up to my cage. At first I was drawn to her, but I quickly stifled the feeling. I had been through too much to become attached to another selfish Neopian.

A few minutes later, after she had talked to my current owner, she took me out of my cage. "Hi!" she said, "My name is Tashni." She then pointed to her NeoPets and introduced them. The Shoyru was Nokura, the Zafara was Zafi, and the Grundo was Shoonie. "I'm your new owner!" she happily concluded.

I looked up into her sweet blue eyes, and I had to believe she was different from the others. But I still knew that there had to be some sort of catch. I looked at her again, this time distrustfully and said, "I don't have a name."

"Well," Tashni replied, "we'll just have to give you one then!"

She took me home and cleaned me up. Then she gave me some of the most delicious food I'd ever had. After my tummy was full, I found myself in a warm bed. It was better than Faerieland ever could be! The following morning, she didn't put me up for trade. She didn't put me in a gallery. She didn't even force me to become an adult Krawk! We all stayed home and played together. She even gave me a name, Narsysus, after one of her favourite movies. And how is my life today? Everything I had ever come to believe about Neopians has melted away with her love. She has told me that I never need to be an Adult Krawk if I don't want to! And you know what? I believe her.

The End

The point I'm trying to make is that it's very unlikely that many of us Neopians will come across one of these rare specimens.
