The Grand Pteri

by revz

Scarlet Wing was a rogue among the ancients Pteris. Or so the other Pteris thought. His opinions were always different from even those of his elders. While the older Pteris were content on feasting on small Tyrannian fruit or the occasional unwary mollusk, Scarlet Wing felt that Pteris deserved better. Although this idea put him at odds with the Pteri elders, he soon took off from their treetop village. The tasty scent of Ransaurus Steak soon drove him to the Tyrannian Volcano. What he discovered was a stack of food so great; it could feed his flock for months. He also saw that it belonged to a pack of evil Dactyls.

The vicious creatures had just returned after a day of terrorizing Tyrannia. Apart from the load of food that they carried, one of them also held something in its claws. Whatever it was, it was glowing brightly. Scarlet Wing moved in for a closer look. It was a faerie, glowing in a bright yellow light. Somehow compelled to save the faerie, Scarlet Wing thought of a plan. He gathered some nearby bones and made the shape of a Grarrl. Then, he picked up some stones and threw them at the Dactyls. As the Dactyls turned, he ducked into the big boulders.

They saw a strange Grarrl like shape, and thought that a Grarrl was attacking them. As the Dactyls flew out the volcano to face the Grarrl, Scarlet Wing moved in quietly to help the injured faerie. Unfortunately, a Dactyl saw him and screamed after him. But before it could get Scarlet Wing, he was already flying through a passage too narrow for the big Dactyls. Scarlet Wing and the faerie were safe. The faerie was very grateful to Scarlet Wing. After resting for a while, it turned and smiled at him, then suddenly vanished in a bright blinding flash! Scarlet Wing felt something strange. He felt the power of the Fire faerie and the Swiftness of the Air faerie flow through him. Then he felt so tired and fell asleep.

The Dactyls were very mad. A Pteri tricked them. They wanted revenge, so they flew through Tyrannia, rounding all the Pteris in one big cage. By nighttime, the Dactyls had rounded up all the Pteris of Tyrannia and looked hungrily at the cage. The Pteris knew that they would be the Dactyls’ next dinner. Suddenly, something like a huge bird of fire flew between the cage and the Dactyls. Balls of fire came out of its mouth, knocking some of the Dactyls unconscious. The remaining Dactyls tried to attack but a great gust of wind was protecting the creature.

All the Dactyls flew away in fear. The creature turned to the cage and freed all the captured Pteris.

As they flew out of the cage, the elders asked the creature, “Who are you?”

He answered, “Why, I am Scarlet Wing!”

They were all surprised. “It is the rogue!”

He smiled. “Yes, the rogues has come to save you.”

They all began to thank him. The elders even started to call him the Grand Pteri. Though they never learned why and how Scarlet Wing transformed into his new form, Scarlet Wing still helped his fellow Pteris. He showed them the Dactyls’ stack of food and introduced the Pteris to may other different kinds of food. He even found and showed them the location of the great omelet (Pteris, with their ability to fly, were the first Tyrannians to locate this food source). And he made them friends with the flocks of Airax inhabiting the Tyrannian jungles (to this day, the Airax is the Pteris favourite PetPet). After helping them some more, he decided to fly to the outside world. He wanted to teach the Pteris many other new things from outside Tyrannia. Being protected by Fire and Air, he flew above the Mountains of Terror, and journeyed across Neopia. He returned every once in a while to teach the Pteris new ideas. To honour Scarlet Wing, Pteris made it their duty to keep Tyrannia free from the threat of the Dactyls. Although it is rumoured that Dactyls are still hiding somewhere in the Tyrannian caves, Tyrannian citizens are confident that Pteris will always be there to keep them safe.

Sometimes, its pays to have a different idea from the rest.
