Mum says Eat Your Veggies

by sparky63428

“Eat your veggies.”

HEALTH FOOD STORE – Due to the ridiculous amount of junk food in Neopia, the Health Food Quiggle actively promotes his store and vegetarianism by randomly donating health food to the money tree in the “Health Frog's Spectacular Vegetarian Food Giveaway”. Becoming vegetarian is great for your health, but it is not always easy. “There aren’t many vegetarian items in Neopia so without meat, my pet will starve,” you may think. Well, you are completely wrong! Having a vegetarian Neopet is much easier than you think! This article covers everything you need to know about turning your pet vegetarian. I will show you that it’s not all about bananas and broccoli (and asparagus!).

Part 1: Making the Transfer

First of all, let me dispel some common vegetarian myths. They are all rubbish, so don’t believe them!

Myth 1: Vegetarian Foods are boring!

- No, they’re not. I’ll prove it to you in this article. It is not just asparagus and carrots, apples and pears! There are many interesting and delicious vegetarian dishes.

Myth 2: My pet won’t get enough nutrients or vitamins!

- It will. Veggies have all the nutrients your pet will ever need. You just have to know what to feed it. If you are still worried about malnutrition, give your pet vitamin tablets, but I assure you that they are totally unnecessary.

Myth 3: Eew, vegetables. Urk!

- Vegetables are not disgusting. In fact, there are many tasty and great vegetarian dishes in Neopia.

Okay, let’s get on with it! Being vegetarian means eating no animals (or Neopets and petpets for that matter) at all (and yes, that includes fish and chicken). That means that all dairy foods and by products of animals are allowed in the diet, that is, you can drink milk, eat eggs, yoghurt and cheese.

Now you know what vegetarianism is, here are some tips on making the transfer!

If your Neopet eats meat all the time, try adding a few veggie foods, like apples and carrots, in his/her diet. If they immediately reject them, try a veggie burger, veggie salad or some veggie hotdogs! As your pet gets more and more exposed to veggie foods, they will beg for more.

As time goes along, give your pet more veggies and less meat. Soon, your pet will be fully vegetarian. But you may have one more question: “What is there to eat besides apples and asparagus?? They get boring after a while!”

“Plenty.”

Part 2: Veggie Foods of Neopia

You may think your Neopet will miss out on all the good food, like cakes, pizza, hotdogs and junk food. As I’ll show you soon, you are totally wrong.

Let’s start with the basics. There are many ‘boring’ vegetarian foods in Neopia: Apples, pears, bananas, tchea fruit, zeenana, tigersquash and other fruits. There are many vegetables: cabbage, asparagus, broccoli and many others. Most pets will get bored of these very easily, so I’ll introduce you to some of the more exciting foods.

BREAKFAST

Cereal is one of the first things that come to mind when talking about breakfast. There are many cereals available for the vegetarian Neopet, and it’s not all veggies! How about some: Neocrunch cereal, plum crunch cereal, coco Neocrunch or Shoyru cereal?

Or would your pet simply like some toast? Well, there are many options. Here are some of them: mecha tiger jam and toast, Faerie toast with butter, toast with jam, boiled/scrambled/fried egg on toast, tigerbuggle jam on toast, and of course, chocolate pita sandwich! Don’t they sound delicious!

There are also many drinks available. Kau Kau Farm Milk and its many variations, various fruit juices, water, and most of the tea and coffee.

LUNCH

For lunch, your pet could have:

Vegetarian sausage roll, sugary sausage roll, banana roll, chocolate roll, fruit punch roll, vegetarian cheeseburger, seaweed flotsam burger, mighty Grarrl burger, Cybunny carrot burger, and snot burger!

For a drink, your pet could have most of the smoothies of Neopia, and many of the slushies available in Neopia.

DINNER

Dinner is a big meal, but not the most important one of the day.

Hotdogs and pizzas are a great idea. Veggie hot dog, carrot hot dog, banana hot dog, chocolate hot dog, water pizza, mud pizza, grape pizza, broccoli and cheese pizza, crust pizza, edible tar pizza, peachy pizza, cloud pizza, vegetarian pizza block, chocolate chip pizza and jelly bean pizza.

DESSERT

Mmmm, dessert! This is one of the most exciting meals for anyone – a time to eat sugary foods…

Vegetarian pets do not miss out on much in the dessert side of things. Most of the cakes and ice creams of Neopia should be safe for vegetarians. However, you may have to be careful as ice cream usually contains animal products, such as fat. Unfortunately, jelly is also non-veggie as it contains gelatin, unless it states that it is vegetarian.

Pies are also an option: Kraku mince pie, vionanna mince pie, triple chocolate mince pie, tigersquash mince pie, vegetarian meat pie, roast chestnut pie.

SNACKS

There are endless options for snacks. All the fruits are options, so let your pet try out some of the more exotic ones, like ones found on mystery island.

Popcorn, Peanuts, doughnuts and cupcakes are also great options! There are too many to name here, so search around!

PART 3: More Serious Foods

Many of the foods I have mentioned above are the more enjoyable foods your pet can have – chocolate and other unhealthy foods. There is a danger of some of them containing traces of animal ingredients. If you really want to be safe, you should try to stick to foods that have vegetarian in its description or name, along with foods that are made with fruits and veggies only, such as salads.

Part Four: The Happy Vegetarian

I hope this article helps you decide to turn your pet vegetarian, and shows you how fun it is being vegetarian. The foods I have listed in this article are just the beginning. Search around for other interesting options!
