The Rainbow Doughnut Hunt

by epk

"Hey! Don't got all day you know. Get me a Rainbow Doughnut, please!" yelled the Kitchen Chef, moments after I, epk, had approached him.

"Hold on! Why do you want a Rainbow Doughnut?" I asked, "I mean, how do you know I was even volunteering my services?"

"I don't care if you asked for any help or not. I just need a Rainbow Doughnut for the Mumbo Pango," Sheytano screamed.

"Well, why hasn't anyone got you one?" I asked, curiously. The Rainbow Doughnut, last time I checked, was no more then 100 NP at the Shop Wizard.

"No, people have got me one. That's the problem - Mumbo Pango is addicted. He's been consuming thousand's a day. He doesn't want anything else."

"Well, what will you give me."

"I'll give you one of the many recipes Mumbo Pango didn't want," Sheytano smiled, pointing over to the Techo Mountains. No wait...wasn't there only one? I wasn't seeing double, there was a huge mountain of expensive food, possibly gourmet, just laying there.

     "Be right back."

At the Haunted Woods Marketplace
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?" I yelled at a person inches in behind of me in the line to the Haunted Woods Marketplace Shop Wizard. It was the same person I had met at the line at Neopia Central's Marketplace last Grundo Independence Day.

     "IT'S THE HYPOCRITE!"

"Be quiet...um...what are you doing here?" I asked the person.

"I came here because the Mystery Island Marketplace had a huge crowd, Neopia Central's larger. Everyone is looking for Rainbow Doughnuts," he told me. "Including me."

     "That's the same reason I'm here...erm..." I said.

He suddenly chirped in, "I'll give you my White Ixi Plushie if you let me cut."

"No way! I've given hundreds of home-baked Choco-Strawberry Muffins with the same recipe Tarquin used to get up here..."

"Same old hypocrite," the person murmured under his breath.

After twenty minutes and twenty-four Choco-Strawberry Muffins later, I had finally made it to the Shop Wizard. "Hey, Wiz! Spare me a search for Rainbow Doughnut?" I smiled, surely hoping they weren't all bought out. I turned around and waved at the line that was giving me angry glances, adding more to their frustration and taking away from my safety.

"There's three at Nest and Rest," the Shop Wizard smiled. The line got more irritated at me. The Shop Wizard smiled harder and yelled, "For 300 NP a pop! Three times yesterday's SWA!" and started rolling on the ground laughing at my face. I didn't care about the 200%+ 'tip,' I needed Rainbow Doughnuts bad. Before I left, I ran into a shop with a Green Bike for 'faster' traveling. Not surprisingly, those had a price spike too.

Soon, I was at the outside of Nest and Rest. It was dark at the Haunted Woods marketplace, and a small trail dark-blue-slash-brown dirt led down where some other shops could be seen. The only light was that of the shops, and you could easily hide. It was about 40 or 50 degrees.

At Nest and Rest

"Hello. Can I have a Rainbow Doughnut?" I said, panting entering the door.

"Sure! 300 NP!" the shopkeeper, a starry Uni, smiled.

I pulled out 300 NP a bought one. Not wanting to look suspicious for buying multiple doughnuts, I pulled outside and put on a Usul Costume while a few Neopets entered.

"Can I have a Rainbow Doughnut?" said a rather suspicious looking Usul.

"Sorry. We had three, but then this one owner came in, and then this Skeith entered and ordered two and ate them both, and we now have none. Again, sorry," the Uni frowned as I left the building in a Usul Costume and took it off and as a Security Guard Gelert from a neighbouring store stared.

I got the bike up, put the Rainbow Doughnut in my backpack (in a plastic bag of course) and rode off to the next shop, named the Golden Discount.

At Golden Discount

"Do you have any Rainbow Doughnuts?" I said, walking in.

The shopkeeper, a bulky spotted Kiko, turned to me. "Why do you wanna know?"

     "It's a quest."

"Who is the quest for? The Soup Faerie."

     "Sheytano."

     "Who?"

"Sheytano - the Mystery Island Kitchen Chef."

"How do you know that's his name?"

"Look in the Maraqua Neopedia article," I said. Hopefully that explains that to the people reading this.

"Oh...okay!" the Spotted Kiko smiled, and hopped over to his copy.

"Not now...later!" I yelled, and the Spotted Kiko hopped back to me. "Do you, or do you not, have a Rainbow Doughnut?" I yelled, with a bit of anger in my voice.

"I have a Sugar Doughnut and a Rainbow Paint Brush."

"I don't have that sort of money!" I yelled at the Kiko's stupidity.

"Then shoo!" he said, squinting his eyes.

I started to turn around when I saw, hanging on the door, the best, most realistic, nylon Usul Costume I had ever seen. The way it hung on the wall, it sung to me: "Buy me...buy me...buy me...only 1,200 Neopoints! Buy me...buy me..." I asked the Kiko if I could buy it. He nodded, picked it up as I hung around the cash register. I handed over the 1,200 NP, got the costume, and exited the door, happily. I was hugging my Usul costume with the greatest of joy. The voice still spoke to me, "Buy me...buy me..." I was later informed of an intercom on the door.

Folding up the costume and throwing away the old ragged one, I got on my Green Bike and headed down the path to a store called, Dream Items.

At Dream Items
The exact moment I entered Dream Items I felt a fragrance overwhelm my body, a bright light shine in my eyes. A Faerie Scorchio in a tux ran up to me. "Helllooo EPK!" he yelled. "May I interest you in none other then our enormous selection of DOUGHNUTS?"

     "Doughnuts? Any Rainbow?"

     "Four. A Baker's Dozen."

     "That's not a dozen!" I pointed out.

"True, but it still is four. And you can have any one of these doughnuts for just 100 NP!"

"One hundred? That's a bargain..." I whispered, looking at the shelves of doughnuts. "I'll take them all!"

"No. You can only have one for a hundred. Your second costs two hundred, your third four hundred, then eight hundred...so on."

"I'll take two!" I smiled. Not only was this Scorchio running an illegal practice, I had a second identification to take advantage with. I handed over 300 NP and ran back outside after putting the doughnuts in my plastic bag and took out the Usul costume. In the dim light supplied by the Haunted Woods marketplace, the costume still glowed. I quickly put it on over my clothes, waited a while, and walked in. The same overwhelming fragrance and bright light stood as the Faerie Scorchio ran up to me. "Helllooo EPK DRESSED AS AN USUL! May I interest you in none other then our enormous selection of DOUGHNUTS?"

I gulped. The Scorchio remembered knew it was me, but wasn't reacting. "Can I have....uh...two Rainbow Doughnuts?"

     "300 NP then."

"Wouldn't it be one thousand two hundred, since I bought two doughnuts here already?"

"According to my records, EPK DRESSED AS AN USUL has not bought anything, but EPK has." I smiled as the brain-dead salesman gave me the discounted doughnuts, and I ran off, placing these doughnuts in my backpack, along with the costume, and ran off to the next store: S.G.U.

At S.G.U.

Entering S.G.U, it was a dark room with a Lenny working on something, some sort of gadget, in the corner, where there was little light emitting. "Hello?" I yelled, and the Lenny jumped up.

"Oh, hello. A customer! I'm sorry, but I only got one item in stock right now: The Rainbow Doughnut Detector x2003."

     "Does it detect Rainbow Doughnuts?"

     "Yup! For only 150 NP!"

     "Bought!"

I quickly exited S.G.U. and turned a dial on the RDDx2003. The screen flickered green, and had coordinates and dots. One dot was labeled "You," another was labeled "Rainbow Doughnut x124." I looked in the distance, and saw the shop where the one hundred and twenty-four Rainbow Doughnuts were being sold. I got on the Green Bike and petaled over as fast as I could.

At The Rainbow Doughnut Shop
There was a crowd of people at this shop, not surprisingly, and I was waiting in line as the shopkeeper gave everybody their Rainbow Doughnuts. "Next!" yelled the shopkeeper, a Red Meerca. A duo of Yellow Usuls in sunglasses walked up to the cash register.

"Give us all your Rainbow Doughnuts," the one on the left demanded.

"We have a limit of three per customer - so that'd be six for the two of you."

"Give us all your Rainbow Doughnuts," the one of the right persisted.

"Sorry, but we have a limit of three per customer."

The Usul on the right pulled out a Rod of Dark Nova, the one on the left pulled out a Wand of the Dark Faerie. The one on the left demanded, "Give us all your Rainbow Doughnuts."

This, of course, was happening while the entire store was being pulled into an uproar. Purses were flying, doughnuts were being tossed, and rays of plasma or whatever were being shot out of the weapons. A third Yellow Usul had blocked the entrance, guarded with a Sword of Domar and a bunch of Clockwork Grundos. I overheard the other two Usul's chuckle, "Heh. We finally get to see the Usul Gang boss - he'll be so happy. I bet we'll get a promotion."

They had never seen their boss! Ideas surged through my head. I ran quickly to the Men's Restroom and got out my Usul costume. Quickly pulling it on, I ran out. "Boys! Settle down!" I yelled at the top of my lungs, in the most realistic 'gang leader' voice. They weren't responding. I jumped on the Cash Register and picked up the Usul on the left. "SETTLE DOWN!" I yelled. The entire place went quiet. "Hand me those weapons, I'll take it from here." They quietly moved the weapons from their possession to mine. Everyone in the store didn't move, fearing for their life. I held up the Rod of Dark Nova and it glowed a purple colour. I started to walk out the door, my 'followers' holding onto the bag of Rainbow Doughnuts.

Right before I got to the door, I whispered to an innocent Poogle, "Attack..." handing him the Wand of the Dark Faerie. Confused, but fearing for his life, the Poogle went straight into action, and I did my part too, attacking the Usuls like crazy, The store was in an uproar again, obviously confused on who to root for. I suddenly told the Poogle to stop, while the 'Usul Gang' fell down, defeated. I picked up the bag Rainbow Doughnuts and handed them over to the overjoyed shopkeeper, while also unzipping the hood of my costume. The entire crowd at the store gasped.

"Wow! How can I ever repay you?" she said, looking over the saved merchandise, around the time the police came and arrested the Usul Gang and the leader also.

"Well, I did come here for a few Rainbow Doughnuts..."

Back at Mystery Island
"So, Sheytano. How's this for Rainbow Doughnuts?" I asked, carrying a wheelbarrow full of them.

"Delightful! Take your pick at the mountain of food - equal to the amount of doughnuts you brought!" Sheytano exclaimed.

"Hold on Sheytano...the expensive food is on the top, and the cheap in on the bottom? How do you expect me to reach?"

Sheytano just laughed as I stared at the exclusive Mechaberries and other fine foods, kilometres from reach. It was going to be a long night, that was for sure.
