It was a brand new winter day in Neopia as Snow the plushie
Bruce began to dress for a fun filled day of ice-skating with her friends. She
grabbed her pink laced ice-skates from her closet and ran down stairs for some
breakfast. As she approached the kitchen sweet smells of Strawberry Bruce Muffins
reached her nose. “Yummy in my tummy,” Snow said as she sat in front of the
plate.
“Now don’t eat too many of those Snow, I don’t
want you getting sick on me,” Snow’s owner said while chuckling at her Bruce’s
excited face.
“Okay,” Snow said sadly while gobbling down a
muffin in two bites. After finishing 3 of the 10 muffins, Snow quickly put her
shoes on and waited patiently for her owner to put on her own.
As they walked to the car, Snow’s owner began
the lecture, “Now don’t forget to tie your skates real tight, be careful not
to run into any one, don’t go too fast…”
“I already know, we go through this every time,”
Snow interrupted with an irritated face.
Snow’s owner sighed and then turned to her Bruce
with a smile, “I’m sorry sweetie, I just want to make sure you’re as safe as
possible, especially when I’m not there to protect you.”
Right as she finished her sentence they arrived
in front of the ice covered lake, where Snow’s friends sat waiting for her arrival.
Snow rushed out of the car with skates in hand, “Bye, see you in an hour….”
“Bye sweetie, be careful!” Snow’s owner shouted
back at Snow as she started to drive off.
Snow didn’t hear her owner’s reply, she was too
busy hurriedly putting on her skates and greeting her friends. After Snow and
her two friends, Charmer the Korbat and Dragon the Draik, put on their skates
as well, they all got onto the ice. Forty minutes later Snow was still skating
and having so much fun with her friends. Snow turned to her friends with a smile,
“Isn’t this so much fun!”
But Snow’s friends didn’t get to answer, as suddenly
Snow began to lose her balance and fell right on her side, slamming her elbow
onto the ice. Snow quickly got up, but after getting up she realized something
was wrong, she couldn’t move her wing.
“Oh my! Snow are you okay?” Charmer asked sympathetically
“Not really, my wing is really hurting me, I
think I should go and sit down.”
“We’ll go with you,” said Dragon while helping
Snow off the ice.
As they walked towards the bench Snow’s owner
came into view. As soon as Snow’s owner came closer she sensed something was
wrong and quickly ran to her Bruce. “What happened!?”
Snow frowned and started to cry, “I fell, and
now I can’t move my wing... I’m sorry…”
Snow’s owner sighed, “It could have happened
to any one, come on let’s get you to a doctor and see what you did to it.
When they arrived at the emergency room, there
was a long wait to see the doctor. Snow and her owner waited for four straight
hours before the nurse called them in. Right away the doctor took x-rays of
Snow’s wing only to find Snow’s owners suspicions correct, Snow had broken her
elbow. The doctor then wrapped Snow’s wing in a pasty white colored cast, and
wished her well.
As Snow slowly got into the car she started to
feel her elbow pounding with pain. Snow held in her pain, she didn’t want to
complain. The little Bruce not only broke her elbow, but her heart as well.
Snow was saddened that now she would have to have her owner do even more for
her then she already has to. She knew her owner would never trust her alone
again.
When they reached their quiet, little, cottage-like
Neohome, Snow rushed up stairs ahead of her owner intending to get dressed for
bed all by herself. “Snow wait for me!” Snow’s owner shouted out for her.
Snow pretended not to hear her owner and began
to try and take off her pants. At this time her owner reached her room and walked
towards her chuckling. “Here let me help you…”
“No! I can do it myself!” Snow snapped back at
her owner as she tried with all her might to undress herself.
Shocked at her Bruce’s outburst, Snow’s owner
replied, “Fine, I’ll just sit here on your bed and wait for you to realize you
can’t do it for yourself.”
Snow kept on trying and kept on failing. Her
stubbornness was getting the best of her, but Snow refused to admit she needed
help. After five minutes of struggle Snow broke down into tears. “I’m sorry…
I need your help... please?”
As Snow stood there balling her eyes out Snow’s owner found herself tearing
as well. “Oh, of course I’ll help you. Come over here.”
After Snow was fully dressed, she hugged her
owner with her good wing and realized she was going to need a lot of help.
“I know its going to be a pain having to dress
me and all. I’m sorry for being such a pain earlier, it's just I don’t really
like having someone do everything for me. I feel so silly…”
“Don’t feel silly, it’s not your fault this happened.
We’ll just have to both hang in there and stick through all this. Okay?”
Snow solemnly spoke, “Okay.”
***
For the next six weeks Snow’s owner had to do mostly everything for the little
Bruce. Including wash her hair, cut her food, help her dress, and even tie her
shoes! Even though Snow’s owner was extremely exhausted, she showed no signs
of it and gave her full support to her Bruce.
After the first few weeks, Snow felt as if she
were a baby needing to be tended to every minute and looked after as a fragile
piece of glass. Her owner was being such a big help and she was grateful to
have her around. But all Snow wanted was to be independent again, to be able
to do simple tasks by herself.
Finally, the day came when Snow and her owner
were arriving at the doctor's to remove her cast.
“Hello again, Snow. Are you ready to get that
cast off?” greeted Dr. Goft, a male Green Gelert.
Snow grinned. Boy was she ever ready! She shook
her head up and down violently in response.
After a couple minutes of cutting and ripping,
the cast was finally off and Snow instantly felt a burden lifted. Even though
she would still have a week or two of physical therapy, she would be able to
do the simple tasks she had taken advantage of in the past.
As they left the doctors office Snow gave her
owner a big hug and kiss. “Thank you for all of your help. Without you I wouldn’t
have been able to do much of anything.”
Just knowing that Snow appreciated her help made
Snow’s owner’s eyes fill with tears. She grabbed her Bruce in her arms and said,
“Any time, honey. Any time.”
The End
Authors note: This story was almost an exact replica of what happened to
me in real life. Right now I am still in a cast. Thank you to Holly and Ares
for featuring your pets in my story. Also a big support to selina and saphire
for inspiring me to keep on writing, even with only one hand. :)
