Quests Questioned

by el_gran_gordo

ENDLESS PLAINS - With so many quests available in Neopia and a limit of ten per day, which quest is the right one for you? What is the purpose of Kitchen Quests? Why Snow Faerie Quests are so expensive relative to others? Are Esophagor Quests worth my time? How do you complete Brain Tree Quests? Who is Edna? What is the deal with Jhudora and Illusen? Well, a three-month study was conducted where all quests were completed and recorded. The results will, hopefully, shed some light unto what type of quests are most suitable for you and provide you with some very helpful advice on when to complete or fail a quest, and most importantly how to reduce your overall costs.

Snow Faerie Quests

Terror Mountain is the home of the Snow Faerie. If you ever decide to visit her you will be asked for a favour. She will embark you on a quest to find ingredients for a spell she is currently working on, but before you get started on wasting your Neopoints, you should ask yourself "Is this quest worth the trouble?"

Snow Faerie Quests are have the potential to be relatively expensive-you can expect her quests to cost as low as 500 Neopoints to as high as over 45,000 Neopoints!!! The rewards, however, also have the potential to contain an "unbuyable" (i.e. items valued over 100,000 Neopoints). But before you go and start doing every single quest she asks for, keep in mind that the rewards are randomised so the probability of receiving an "unbuyable" is just as likely as receiving a Lime Elixir. So, which quests should you do? The results of the three-month study yielded the following information concerning Snow Faerie Quests:

   • Amount of Snow Faerie Quests Completed: 118
   • Average Neopoints Spent Per Quest: 2,467
   • Average Neopoints Received Per Quest (not including items):        1,848
   • Average Profit (not including items): -619 Neopoints
   • Most Valuable Item Awarded: Wand of the Air Faerie
   • Least Valuable Item Awarded: Evil Snowball
   • Presently, the most valuable item that can be awarded is Dark
      Battle Duck
   • Magical Snowball Distribution:

Wet Snowball- 11.86% Poison Snowball- 14.41% Evil Snowball- 11.86%
Peach Snowball- 22.03% Yellow Snowball- 9.33% Icy Snowball- 13.56%
Sticky Snowball- 9.32% Exploding Snowball- 7.63%

Although no "unbuyables" were awarded during my research, the quests were worth the time and Neopoints spent since I was occasionally reward with relatively good items. As a general rule, it is highly recommended to do quests that cost 2000 Neopoints or less because chances are that the Neopoints spent on the items requested will be reimbursed after the quest is completed. Anything above 2000 Neopoints is a judgement call-will you be willing to risk losing Neopoints for the chance at being rewarded something greater? After all, any quest could be the one that will reward you with that wonderful "unbuyable" item. Remember, however, there is no penalty for failing her quest; you can always do another quest once the time has expired. Another thing to keep in mind is that you are only able to do 10 quests a day, so quests must be selected wisely. Some more information is displayed below-it should be very helpful in reducing your overall costs:

   • Price Range: 500 - 45000 NP
   • Reward: 900- 3000 NP + Item + Magical Snowball
   • Items asked stock in the following shops:
          1. Chocolate Factory
          2. Magic Shop
          3. Pharmacy
          4. Snow Food Shop
   • Items received can be one of the following:
          1. Battle Magic
          2. Defence Magic
          3. Snowball
          4. Food (including slushies)

Kitchen Quests

After the unfortunate destruction of Maraqua, King Mumbo Pango fled to Mystery Island. This, however, posed a problem for the chef, Flotsam Wok, because now he no longer had the ingredients necessary to feed the King. Are you willing to help him out? Well, if you're into the Battledome, then this is one quest that is worth your troubles. As amazing as it may sound, this Flotsam is capable of increase your pet's endurance, level, strength, defence, or agility if you complete his quest. This can become a very effective way in increasing your stats, especially for those high level pets that have to pay 3 Codestones or more in the Training School-but be warned, this chef won't always increase your stats. The alternate rewards include Neopoints or items, such as books, usuki dolls and accessories, food, and weapons. The alternate rewards will usually be worth less than the cost of the quest, so don't be surprised if you lose Neopoints whenever this occurs. A total of 77 quests were completed in a three-month extensive study on quests, the results are as follows:

Average amount of Neopoints spent per quest: 1,969
Percentage of times that…
          1. An increase in stats occurred- 41.56%
          2. Neopoints were given as a reward- 33.77%
          3. An item was awarded- 24.68%

Kitchen Quests is not an effective way of obtaining valuable items since those items are usually sold at shops for a price way below that of the total Neopoints spent on the quest. Therefore, I strongly suggest you do Kitchen Quests only if your primary objective is to train your pet. Another problem that arises while training your pet through Kitchen Quests is that having more than one pet may interfere in the training because the Flotsam will pick a pet at random. Thus, this method of training favours those Neopians with only one pet. Nevertheless, it is beneficial to do Kitchen Quests, especially those that cost fewer than 800 Neopoints It might also be wise to complete quests that don't go beyond 50% of what you would pay in codestones at the training school. The following is contains more essential information that may help in future Kitchen Quests:

   • Price Range: 300- 25,000 Neopoints
   • Reward: 800+ Neopoints, Item*, or an increase of Level,
Endurance, Strength, Defence, or Agility to one of your
       pets, if more than one.
   • Items asked stock in the following shops (in no particular
      order):
          1. Food Shop
          2. Spooky Food Shop
          3. Slushie Shop
          4. Snow Food Shop
          5. Tropical Food Shop
          6. Chocolate Factory
          7. The Bakery
          8. Tombola Spooky Food Prizes
          9. Hubert's Hot-dog Stand 10. Smoothie Store
          11. Pizzaroo
          12. Grundo's Cafe
          13. Tyrannian Foods Shop
          14. Desert Food Shop
          15. Health Food Shop
          16. Ye Old Coffee Shop
          17. Faerie Foods Shop

   • *Alternate reward can be an item that can be categorised as:
          1. A random item not exceeding rarity 90 (most likely from
the Food Shop, Battle Magic, Usuki Shop, Book
Store, Toy Shop, or Defence Magic)

Esophagor

The hungry Esophagor can be found in the Haunted Woods. This poor being is on the brink of starvation and will reward anyone who takes his or her time to help. After a total of sixteen quests, a pattern developed:

   • Price Range: 100 - 30,000+ Neopoints
   • Reward: An item not exceed "uncommon" in rarity.
   • Items asked are stocked in the following shops:
          1. Spooky Food Shop

Esophagor quests are quite interesting because the value of rewards can range from a single Neopoint to over 10,000 Neopoints Neopians with a slow Internet connection might find these quests useful since the Esophagor awards items that are very difficult to stock in stores, such as books and toys. On the other hand, you might end up with a Super Toy Sail Boat, so there is a risk, as with all quests, in losing Neopoints Generally, quests containing spooky food costing less than 1000 Neopoints aren't as risky.

Brain Tree

So you have decided to help the Brain Tree… so, how in the world do you answer his question?! I mean, how are you supposed to find out when and where Charles Meerca died? If you try to guess, then chances are that you will never guess correctly. For one, the Brain Tree questions and answers are randomised, so they are different each time. If you keep track of where and when each Neopet died, you will find out, as I did, that even if the Brain Tree asked for information on the same Neopet again, the answer will be different. For example, Sophie Lenny will die in different places and in a different time period than the last time the Brain Tree asked you. So for those keeping records, forget it because it isn't going to help you in future quests.

In order to answer the Brain Tree's question, you will need to feed the Esophagor twice. The first time you feed the Esophagor, it'll tell you the year of the Neopet's death and the second time will reveal the place. Write down the answer, however, because you will need to type it once you go back to the Brain Tree. Be warned, Brain Tree quests can become expensive fast. Here are a few things you should know:

   • Price Range: 300 - 60,000+ Neopoints
   • Reward: Brain Tree Weapons, Armour, or Special Spooky
      Petpets +  Neopoints
   • Answers are found by:
          1. Feeding the Esophagor

The Brain Tree is very kind to those Neopians who help him. In addition to a special petpet or weapon, the Brain Tree will give you Neopoints (possibly over 10,000). You can see who has been rewarded the most Neopoints by clicking on the Brain Tree Scores; those lucky Neopians have also been awarded a cool Brain Tree Trophy!

Edna

The Witch, Edna, loves witchcraft and loves to create potions and spells in her cauldron. However, she tends to forget a few ingredients and asks wandering Neopians to help her out. If you decide to assist her in her newest spell, here are a few things to keep in mind:

   • Price Range: 100 - 2000 NP
   • Reward: Spooky Food + Neopoints
   • Items asked stock in the following shops:
          1. Toy Shop
          2. Magic Shop
          3. Chocolate Factory
          4. Ye Old Coffee Shop
          5. Tiki Tack
          6. Faerie Food Shop
   • Reward:
          1. Spooky Food

Before the instalment of the Spooky Food Shop in the Deserted Playground, Edna was the only source for spooky food. Sadly, the type of spooky foods she gives nowadays is limited to the ones released before the shop, so until the Neopets Team decides to update her quests, I advice all Neopians to do only those quests that cost under 300 Neopoints since she only awards you with a very common spooky food and 100- 300 Neopoints It is a good idea to complete her quests if you are low in Neopoints or haven't done any of her quests before, but other than that there is little incentive to visit the witch's tower.

Jhudora's Cloud

Jhudora's Cloud is the hardest quest of all mainly because there is a penalty for failing her quests and the items become increasingly more difficult to find as the level of her quest increases. Rumour has it that only five people have completed all fifty quests. Rumour also has it that completion of all fifty quests results in having your account disabled, or "frozen". The Neopets Team recently denied this claim in The Neopian Times Week 71's Editorial, so it may have been just been a coincidence. Well, apparently this hasn't stopped many Neopians from pursuing the goal of completing all fifty quests and hoping to one day be rewarded those extremely rare and powerful artifacts.

The first couple of quests are relatively inexpensive (expect to pay below 10,000), but the price of items she asks skyrockets at around Level 25 (over 25,000). Thus, failing the early expensive quests might be a wise choice, but at around Level 25, failing shouldn't be an option since you will be paying more Neopoints in the long run if you decide to fail the quest and start over than if you pay the price to advance to the next level.

As a rule of thumb: Expect to pay more the next quest than the preceding one. It is recommended not to do another quest unless you have enough Neopoints to afford a much more expensive item than that which you gave her the previous quest. So if it is so expensive, why do people insist on doing her quests? Well, Jhudora gives out rewards every three completed quest levels, starting from the first until the 50th. Here is a list of rewards along with some useful information:

   • Price Range: 100 - 1 Million+ Neopoints
   • Items Asked: RANDOM (Rarity of item increases as level increases)
   • Rarity 99 Item Levels ~ Lv.28-50
   • Rewards:

Illusen's Glade

Within the war-beaten land of Meridell lies Illusen's Glade. This earth faerie made this land her home to get away from dark faeries. It seems like Illusen isn't very fond of Jhudora, and as a result, if you decide to embark on one of Jhudora's quest and later decide to visit Illusen's Glade, she will refuse to allow you to help, and vice versa. So what makes Illusen's Glade different from Jhudora's Cloud? Well, Illusen asks for rarer items as you increase in level and penalises those who fail her quests, but unlike Jhudora, Illusen's quests have a reputation to being less difficult than that of Jhudora because the rarity of items requested do not increase as quickly by level. Also, Illusen's prizes are earth-based-the weapons she awards you do attack with earth magic, which is relatively more common, and consequently easier to block than Jhudora's dark-based weapons. Nevertheless, Illusen's weapons are powerful-especially those awarded at high level-and shouldn't be underestimated. The following reveals some more insight regarding items asked and rewards given:

   • Price Range: 100 - 1 Million+ Neopoints
   • Items Asked: RANDOM (Rarity of item increases as level increases)
   • Rarity 99 Item Levels ~ Lv.35-50
