Just A Bunch of Letters

by ladyariel32

20th Day of Awakening, Year 6

Dear Yannagiba,

Greetings from the land of endless sand, the Lost Desert! I saw your classified ad (if you would permit me to call it in that way) on the Neopian Notice Board as I happened to visit Neopia Central. I thought, "If this Gelert is crazy enough to post a notice looking for a pen pal, he must be a very interesting person!" That is the reason for my writing to you.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Isis, a female Desert Aisha living in a humble Neohome in the Lost Desert. Just in case, you don't think I am worthy of becoming your pen pal, allow me to announce that:

1. I am a very interesting person.
2. I absolutely love to read books!
3. I already told you that I live in the Lost Desert.

I hope you are contented with my list.

Now, I will tell you more about myself. I am an only Neopet, belonging to my beloved owner, Lady Re. We live in a Neohome made of marble, gold, and silver. Perhaps, you are thinking that I am wealthy. You are right. All my material wishes are granted as soon as the words leave my mouth. The best gift I have received from Re, so far, is my pet Anubis. I named him Horus. I know, I know. It sounds weird since there is a petpet called Horus. I don't mind. Horus doesn't mind either.

I have plenty of hobbies. One is filling up my stamp collection (do you like the Lost Desert Grarrl stamp I used on the envelope?). Another is reading. How many books have you read, Yannagiba? I personally have read 692, in all. You probably noticed, by now, that I write in a rather "well-expressed" way. Honestly, though, doesn't everyone?

Besides those two, I also like to travel all over the Lost Desert and the rest of Neopia. Well, once in a while, at least. If ever you decide that you want to explore the Lost Desert, just tell me. I will make an excellent tour guide. When we get to know each other better, is it alright if I ask you to give me a tour of Neopia Central? I've only been there a few times. Since you are a Neopia Central native, you know all the secret hideaways, right?

I have nothing more to say, for now. Reply soon.

Your (hopefully) friend,
Isis

22nd Day of Awakening, Year 6

Dear Isis,

Hello there! You're the first Neopet to reply to my notice. I'm a bit surprised. The notice board is supposed to make stuff "get noticed", right? How come you're the only one who sent me a letter, huh? Hmm… this calls for some really deep thinking.

Because you described your family and Neohome, I guess I will, too. My owner's name is Belle. She's not exactly a hardworking Neopian, if you get my drift. Belle hates playing games to earn NPs. I mean, really, she spins the Wheel of Excitement about once in three days and buys a scratch card, oh, once a month. I don't know how she manages to buy us food, toys, and books. I think she has a secret store of NPs somewhere. I'm just going to squeeze in a word about food: gross food items are the BEST!

Boy, you sure are lucky. I can't believe you're an only Neopet! I have two younger sisters and a younger brother. The eldest, after me, is Nadashikoh the Faerie Aisha. She is vain and sarcastic. The two of us have arguments every 5 minutes. Chistomise (he's Aubergine) the Chia is the youngest. He is sweet and loving. Chi is the most popular among us mainly because he's cute and he won Pet Spotlight once. Okay, Uktabi367 (just call him Yuki) is the second youngest. I left him for last because Yuki's description calls for a debate (most of the time, anyway). Originally, he was a Halloween Kacheek. After getting hit by the Lab Ray, he turned into the following: a Koi, Tuskaninny, Jetsam, Flotsam, Kiko, and Kacheek. He is currently a female blue Usul unless, of course, he turns into a different species tomorrow.

Our Neohome is a typical chaotic Neohome. My room is made up of bamboo. It gives me a "Mystery Island" feeling. Okay, I guess that's hard to understand. After I got zapped into Island by the ray, I began to think about the Island a whole lot. Sometimes, I would feel a somewhat hot breeze against my fur and hear a mysterious beat inside my head. Then, I close my eyes and visualize that I am on Mystery Island.

I find you very interesting for…an Aisha. Forgive me for writing that. All those fights with Nadashikoh are rubbing off on me. Oh, and I wouldn't mind giving you a tour. You can visit anytime. Wow, 692 books? I'm impressed. Compared to my measly… oh well, I'd be better off if I don't mention how many books I've read. :P

Tell me more about your life.

Always,
Yannagiba

25th Day of Awakening, Year 6

Dearest Yannagiba,

I am DELIGHTED that you replied so fast to my letter. Your response had me laughing. I thank you for your wonderful gift, my friend. You might as well know that I have never laughed before.

First of all, it is not a surprise that I am the only one who has replied to your plea. You don't care much about material things, don't you? I knew it. You see, Yannagiba, you should have paid at least 500,000 NPs if you wanted plenty of Neopets to see your notice. In fact, it was only by mere chance that I happened to glance upon your ad. Ah, you are probably disappointed.

You sound like one very contented Gelert. I envy you. I wish I had an older brother or sister. It must be great fun to have someone to talk to when you have problems or play with when you are bored. Being an only child is not as wonderful as you think it is.

You asked me to tell you more about my life. Well, then, here is my time frame:

7:00 AM. I wake up and head over to the dining room for a heavy breakfast. If Lady Re is in the mood for splurging, we go to Krawk Island and eat at the Golden Dubloon.

8:00 AM. Horus wakes up. I feed him.

8:20 AM. I lug a pile of books to the garden. It is a beautiful place, Yannagiba. There are cactus flowers everywhere. The sand feels warm under my paws. I spend the entire morning reading.

1:00 PM. It is time for lunch. During the meal, Re asks me about my day so far. I tell her, "Oh, I am having a great time." every time she asks. She smiles. We go back to not talking to each other. Re leaves to shop soon after.

1:30 PM. I go to my room and stretch out on my Funky Blue and Orange Bed. I prepare for an afternoon of activity. After 5 minutes of humming leisurely, I read for the rest of the afternoon.

6:30 PM. Dinner time is the most interesting part of the day. By this time, Lady Re is already very angry (she just got back from Neopia Central). I find it fascinating to look at her red face, her eyebrows joined together and her mouth in a pout. She is in a bad mood because she didn't get a good deal at the Neopian shops. Not only that. The stocks are down, too. It is too bad.

She mutters curses under her breath. After a few minutes, her face becomes a nice shade of crimson. I calmly eat my food while pretending not to stare at her.

7:15 PM. I am back in my room sitting on my favorite Anubis Arm Chair. Can you guess what I am doing? If you guessed I was reading, you are right. Horus is curled up and snoring on his Mootix rug.

9:00 PM. I am back in bed. I open my lava lamp and go to sleep.

I have a question for you, Yannagiba. How do you make friends so fast? I have learned only too well that being an interesting Neopet is NOT enough. Maybe, I should post my own classified ad on the notice board.

Young (and extremely lonely) Faerie Aisha looking for a friend!
Requirements: none

Visit me… NOW! NOW! NOW!

     Well, what do you think?

Yours truly,
Isis

29th Day of Awakening, Year 6

Dear Isis,

Everyone has friends. It's impossible not to make some. Even by just walking outside our Neohome, I meet several Neopets that soon become my friends! Anyway, your everyday schedule seems to be a little (just a little, Isis) boring. Don't get me wrong. I love reading the way you do. I just think reading all day is going too far. Oh, don't mind me. I'm just jealous that you've read much more than I have.

In answer to your question, making friends is as easy as pie. The reason why you don't seem to have too many friends is because you don't get out of your house much. I suggest that you introduce yourself to the Neopets you meet when you travel. They'll be more than happy to become your friends.

If you really want to make a new friend right now (like, at this very moment), follow my advice. As soon as you finish reading this letter, take a deep breath and get out of your Neohome. Walk along Sphinx Road. Smile at the first Neopet you meet. The pet is sure to smile back at you. When she (or he) does, strike up a conversation!

Note: Avoid mentioning that you've read 692 books. The Neopet might, uh, think you're *cough* vain *cough* or something. Besides, she (or he) might not be interested in reading, unlike the two of us.

Always,
Yannagiba

3rd Day of Running, Year 6

Dear Yannagiba,

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR ADVICE!!!!

I have great news. Are you ready? I made a new friend! I can't believe it myself, but yes, I did it. I followed your excellent advice. Let me tell you all about it…

I received your letter this Wednesday morning after eating breakfast at home. It was about 8:30 AM when I went outside and took a walk. Have I told you, Yannagiba, that I am very shy? That is the reason why I like writing to you. I express myself better through writing rather than speaking. If ever we meet, my friend, I would scarcely open my mouth.

Going back to my experience, I walked with my head down and my eyes looking straight at the sand. I walked for three minutes without stopping before I stepped on an olive green paw. Said paw belonged to a massive Mutant Moehog with dull yellow eyes and tusks, a few red hairs sprouting out of his tail, and dark green stripes on his back. I took one look at him, blinked, and… shivered.

"Uh…" I said, momentarily speechless. I was dying inside, Yannagiba. Imagine, meeting a MUTANT MOEHOG on your first ever quest for a friend. Of course, I couldn't let you down, Yannagiba. I stared at him.

"Hi," the Moehog replied gruffly. He looked at me through his heavy-lidded eyes.

I managed a tight-lipped smile. "Hello," I said. "My name is Isis. I live across the street. I am…very pleased to meet you." I held out a paw.

He stared at it for a few seconds then cocked his head. "I'm Mort." He shook my paw.

I almost fainted but thankfully, I didn't. I successfully avoided fainting by thinking of how proud you would be if you found out I made a new friend. We talked about plenty of things. I learned that he likes reading, too. You know what? He has read 701 books, in all! When he mentioned that, I was rendered speechless again. The best part is that Mort invited me over to their Neohome for lunch. After checking with Lady Re to see if I could go, I took Horus to Mort's place. He has a younger sister: a red Blumaroo by the name of Sari. We played for hours.

I could go on and on about my experience for many more paragraphs. You probably have had enough of my ramblings, though, so I will end my letter here.

Again, thank you! This is definitely one of the happiest days of my life.

Your friend,
Isis

5th Day of Running, Year 6

Dear Isis,

Okay, my letter is going to be shorter than usual. Chi needs some help with his garden supplies shopping and of course, *ahem* helpful brother that I am, I offered my humble services. Besides, I had been planning to go there later to mail this letter at the Post Office. :P Anyway, I only have a few minutes left to write. Chi is somewhat impatient.

First of all, congratulations! I see you've got a new friend now. Mort is…he's a bit… to tell you the truth… he's a very… Mort is interesting. He likes to read books, huh? What a whopping amount. If you read all day, I'm guessing he reads all day and all night. What a geek! Er, just joking, Isis. Really. I think he's quite a charming guy. I was just surprised that an Aisha like you would… oh, a MUTANT. Never mind.

I just hope you won't forget your other friends.

I have to go now. Chi is calling me.

Always,
Yannagiba

7th Day of Running, Year 6

Dear Yannagiba,

You are my friend: my very first genuine friend. Please, always remember that.

I hope you have not forgotten what you said in your first letter to me. You said you didn't mind giving me a tour of Neopia Central. Well, the time is ripe, my friend. Tomorrow, I am going to your Neohome with Horus. Don't worry. I have asked Lady Re for her permission. She allowed me to go. I will be arriving at your house at noon.

Since you mentioned that I can drop by anytime, I am expecting you to have a "Welcome Party" for me. I am, after all, the only Neopet who replied to your ad on the notice board. Do refrain from ordering dishes from the Golden Dubloon. I would like you to serve only the best gross food items you can find. I would be positively delighted to have fresh seaweed pie, mustard ice cream, and a glass of clamade for lunch. Finger Crisps and fish pop are most acceptable, too.

See to it that you introduce me to Nadashikoh!

     I'll be there soon!

Your best friend,
Isis

Author's Note: I used my own Neohome address for Yannagiba's address. If ever there really is an address just like Isis', it is a mere coincidence. Thank you for reading my short story! ^^ I hope you enjoyed it. Please Neomail your comments/suggestions. I'll be glad to hear from you.
