That Night of Christmas Eve

by darksquirtle15

"Waaaahh, I'm innocent! I'm innocent! It's his fault not mine, stupid Ultima!" Flare, an adorable young Shoyru with innocent eyes howled and cried. He was hoping for sympathy but, as expected, none came to his aid.

"Would you stop that already? It's bugging me and it is obviously YOUR fault!" Ultima, identical to his younger brother instantly reacted as Flare started to cry even more.

The fight went on for almost hours and it all started when Maxi, their uncle, sent an extremely beautiful and rare Faerie Paintbrush plushie...

***

"Wow, that Faerie paint brush plushie is so cool! I've never seen one before! Where did you get this mum?" asked Ultima.

He stared at the cool plushie endlessly.

"It's from your uncle Maxi. I met him at the toy store of Neopia Central. He gave me this as a gift, but of course, I have no use of it," said Ultima's mother, Mia, a rather beautiful Shoyru with flaming ruby hair and eyes.

She grasped the plushie and examined it carefully.

"You know, there might be some use for this... Maybe I could sell it!"

"Mum, can I have it? Please! I'll be nice for the whole month, I promise! It would be the 'pearl' of my plushie collection!" begged Ultima.

"Oh all right, you can have it but don't ever tell your brother about this or he'll be angry because there's only one of these," Mia warned him.

Suddenly, a voice interrupted their chat.

     "I heard that!"

It was Flare. He clutched his paw tightly.

"You slimy slime, I want that!" Flare demanded as he stretched his rather short arm for the plushie. Flare, as a younger brother, had no respect at all to his older brother.

"No, the plushie is mine! Mother gave it to me fair and square!" Ultima retorted.

Ultima flew out of Flare's reach, knowing that Flare still could not fly yet.

"Now now Flare, you DON'T have a plushie collection so you don't need the plushie," said Mia as she tried to stop Flare from stealing the plushie.

"Well, I will be starting a collection of plushies IF you give me that," pouted Flare.

"Yeah right, you just want it because I’ve got it!" Ultima replied, rolling his eyes sarcastically.

"Just give it to me already!" Flare shouted as he jumped into the air, his wings barely moved at all.

Flare extended his arm to full length and snatched the plushie away from Ultima.

"Yes! It is mine now," he cried triumphantly as he landed on the ground.

Flare tried to flee but was stopped by Ultima in time.

"Give me that plushie back!" shouted Ultima.

Ultima swung around and swatted Flare with his tail, knocking him to the the floor.

"Ouch! That hurts! Take this!" roared Flare as he countered by swatting Ultima.

The fight continued on until Mia snatched the paint brush plushie from the fray.

"Stop, both of you! All right, we will solve this in a better way. Now, let's play a game of rock, scissors and paper. Whoever wins will get this plushie and NO complaints on the losing side. I mean it. Now," Mia finally spoke with a 'you better do this or else' tone.

Flare, being the youngest of the family, had a tendency to lose at this classic game. And so, knowing his fate, he lazily pulled out a scissor and lost.

"Yay! Now, it's officially mine. Now, go away Flare, you have lost!" shouted Ultima as he hugged the plushie tightly.

     "It's not fair! I—"

Flare stopped as he saw Mia's warning look.

"Now Flare, admit it. You've lost and I did say NO complaints. Now, go to your room instantly young man, you need a time out," said Mia.

Flare was no longer victorious. He crept back to his room, defeated, cursing his brother along the way.

Ultima always gets better things than I do. If only I had no brother at all.

Flare let out a disappointed sigh as he pulled his old cozy blanket up to his chin and slowly closed his eyes.

***

After a long nap Flare had forgotten about what had happened earlier that day. He jumped out of bed and ran down the hall ready to play, but came to a screeching halt when he saw Mia and Ultima in the living room suspiciously hiding something from him.

"What was that you're hiding under the table? I saw something... I know! It must be another gift from uncle Maxi! I want to have a look at it!" growled Flare.

"It isn't another gift from Uncle Maxi and no, you can't have a look at it! Go away and leave me alone for once!" shouted Ultima.

"Urrgghh! Ultima, you're so mean to me! Have a taste of this!" shouted Flare as he swatted Ultima with his tail.

"Ouch! What are you doing! That hurts! Stupid brother, take THIS!"

Ultima countered back by kicking Flare's leg. And so, as mentioned before, the fight ensued until Mia asked Ultima to leave the room.

Flare cried and cried without stopping until he got a mischievous idea. He crept silently into his brother's room. It was very clean, neat and tidy. Beautiful cream rug covered the floor, unlike Flare's room which was full of old junk and spyders.

"Well, at least my room 'produced' free petpets!"

Flare whispered to himself, rolling his eyes sarcastically as he gazed around Ultima's room wildly with disgust.

He kept gazing around wildly until he spotted what he was looking for. A beautiful Faerie paint brush plushie, cleverly hidden in beautiful, neat Christmas wrappings......

"Yes... this is just what I need! The plushie! Now, Ultima will pay for his cruel actions towards me! Hah!" cried Flare triumphantly as he snatched the plushie, took it out of the wrappings and put it on a table nearby.

     He'll pay!

Flare took a permanent marker pen and carefully wrote, 'I'm an Egghead and dense' at the back of the plushie.

"Now, he will be embarrassed whenever he shows this to his friends!" cried Flare with a wicked laugh.

Suddenly, Flare could hear footsteps heading towards the room. He quickly slid the plushie back into the wrappings carefully and managed to get out of the room without being seen.

***

That night, it was the Christmas Eve. Flare was having such a wonderful time that he forgot the fight with his brother… that is, until Ultima approached him.

"Flare," started Ultima, "I knew you're mad at me this morning because I hide something from you. That thing I hide under the table was actually this,"

Ultima revealed a beautiful crimson scarf that made Flare gasped.

"I knit it myself and I hide it from you because it won't be a surprise if you know about it. I even knit it with a rare crimson thread because I know you like this colour very much," said Ultima bashfully as he placed the scarf onto Flare's tiny paw.

"Umm... Thank you Ultima, I just don't know what to say......."

"No need to thank me. Consider it a Christmas gift but here's another thing..."

Ultima revealed something that was very familiar indeed. A beautiful, neat Christmas wrappings.

"Here's another gift for you. Hope you like it."

Ultima handed the gift to Flare. Flare cautiously opened the wrappings and found out it was the Faerie paint brush plushie.

"I'm so sorry I acted like a jerk before. I knew you like this very much so I decided to give this to you. I don't care about my collection of plushies anymore. Right now, all I care is the bond that we share throughout this year. Merry Christmas and hope you like the gift!" Ultima said enthusiastically.

     "Thank you, Ultima........"

Flare now understood what he had done was wrong. He realized who the real ‘egghead' was when he looked at the writing on the back of the plushie. From that day forward, Flare vowed never to be so selfish again.

The End

Author's Note:Remember, don't be cruel to your brothers and sisters or you'll probably meet the same fate as Flare!

Another thing, if this story is somehow published, big credit goes to both twayblade807 and ladyfire626 as they gave me lots of tips for writing a good story! And, do Neomail me with comments!
