The Science of Baby-sitting

by soggydude

Scientist Lupe looked at his schedule.

     "Let's see...experiment 1...done! Number 2...done! 3...I don't have all the materials yet..."

Scientist scratched his head in confusion.

"I'm done already?" This was rather new for him. Usually most of his days (including weekdays) were spent by science.

"What else need to be done?

He pulled out his new Paw Pilot, and looked through it.

     "Done...done...done...done...done..."

While he was looking through his electronic schedule, the door knocked. Scientist got up from his kitchen table, and walked to the door.

"Who could that be? I haven't destroyed anything lately..."

He opened the door and saw a neighbour of his.

"Oh, hello Richard. What brings you here?"

The Electric Eyrie took out a small baby Eyrie. "Can you look after little Ralph? His mother is going to a meeting, and I need to work overtime."

     "Well, I'd love to, but-"

"Thanks!" Richard shoved Ralph into Scientist's arms. "Here's his bottle, his diapers, his baby food, his toys, and a whole bunch of other stuff." The Eyrie shoved all of them into Scientist's arms.

     "But-"

"Remember that he likes the milk warm, change his diaper when he needs it, give him toys in this playpen." Richard took out a foldable playpen and walked into Scientist's house. He went an empty room and set it up there.

     "But-"

Richard took Ralph from Scientist and put him into the pen.

"Have fun! I'll be back at three!" He turned to Scientist and they walked to the door.

     "But-"

"I just need to warn you about something."

     "But-"

"Ralph's trying to learn how to fly. Just watch out, and make sure he doesn't get into high places."

     "But I-"

"Make sure he doesn't hurt himself." Richard grabbed Scientist.

"BECAUSE IF HE DOES, I WILL PERSONALLY THROTTLE YOU SO MUCH, YOU'LL BECOME CARBONATED!" He shook Scientist, then stopped.

"Oops..." Richard set him down. "Sorry about that...got a little over excited..."

Scientist nodded, and readjusted his glasses. "That's okay. But I-"

"Bye!" Richard took out a briefcase, and placed a hat on his head. He then flew off, waving.

Scientist looked up. "Since when did he have a briefcase and hat?" Then a loud crying noise came from where Ralph was, and Scientist rushed over to see what he needed.

***

"Okay, here comes the train!"

Scientist directed a spoon at Ralph, who was sitting on a bunch of books that were on a chair, and made train noises.

     "Now eat the baby food!"

     Ralph shook his head.

     "Aeroplane?"

     Another shake of the head.

     "Anything?"

     SPLAT!

Ralph had pushed the spoon into Scientist's face, covering it with baby food.

"Okay, time to resort to drastic measures!" Scientist got out more baby food. He put it in his mouth, and ate some. "Yummy, see?" He ate another spoonful. "Really good!" He ate yet another spoonful.

"Wow, this really is good!" Scientist said, not talking to Ralph. He ate the entire jar quickly, and even licked the insides of the jar.

     "WAAAAAAHHHHH!" Scientist looked up.

"Oh, sorry!" He got up and quickly got another jar of baby food. He opened it and took out a spoonful of it. "Here you go."

     SPLAT!

Scientist wiped off the entire faceful of baby food and picked up the jar. "The things I have to do..." He took out a gigantic spoon, scooped the entire jar into it, and offered it to Ralph. Amazingly enough, he was able to put all in his mouth.

     "Thank Fyora that's over!"

Ralph spat out some, which splattered the kitchen wall. He then began to spit out the rest of the food like a machine gun.

Scientist ducked under the table, until Ralph seemed to be done. Scientist looked up.

     SPLAT!

Scientist sighed and picked up Ralph. "You may like that, but there goes your lunch!"

He put Ralph into the playpen, when the doorbell rang. Scientist walked over to the door and opened it.

     "CONGRATULATIONS!"

A Bruce stood in front of Scientist, grinning so much that all of his teeth were visible.

"What?" Then he recognised him. "Oh, hi boss...what are you doing here?"

"You've done so well, and so we've decided to give you this!" He pointed to Scientist's driveway, which had previously been empty. Now a motorcycle was on it.

"Uh...thanks." A loud thump came from the room Ralph was in. "I mean, THANKS! But I, uh, have more, you know, stuff to do bye!" He slammed the door and ran to the room.

The playpen was turned over, and Scientist saw Ralph near a window in his kitchen.

     "Wait!"

Ralph looked at Scientist, and then hopped outside.

"Oh no!" Scientist first tried to jump out of the window, but got stuck. After freeing himself, he tried the back door, as that was closest one to him. It wouldn't open, so he ran out the front.

"Ah, there you are!" His boss was still standing out. "The motorcycle-"

But Scientist wasn't listening. He ran to the back of his house, but couldn't find the baby Eyrie. He ran to the nearby houses and began to look around there.

Meanwhile, Ralph came out from where he had hidden and began to walk away. He saw a truck in front of Hosh the Krawk's house, which had "ROPES INC." on it. Ralph walked to it, and climbed up a stray rope sticking out of the back. He went to the top, and looked over the edge. Ralph got his feet ready, when...

     "There you are!"

Scientist had spotted him and the truck. But right at that moment, the truck left. Scientist ran to it on all fours, and grabbed the rope that stuck out with his front two paws. He held on as the truck continued on the roads, bumping on the rough areas as Ralph waited for the truck to stop.

The truck stopped at a construction site, causing Scientist to fly into the back of the truck. Ralph looked up at the uncompleted building, and at the highest place. He nimbly jumped off the truck and off to the construction site.

Scientist peeled himself off from the back of the truck and looked around.

     "Ralph? Ralph? Where are you?"

"Hey, what's that crazy Eyrie doing?"

Scientist looked up and saw Ralph approaching the end of the highest beam.

"OUT OF MY WAY!" Scientist shoved the construction workers aside and began to climb up. Scientist managed to reach where Ralph was before he had jumped off.

"Hey there, little guy," Scientist said calmly. "Now, how about not jumping off?"

Ralph moved closer to the edge.

     "Please?"

Ralph moved again. Now he was on the very edge.

     "How about...uh...a song?"

Ralph stopped, and looked at Scientist, who created a song off the top of his head.

Oh Ralph, I'm just singing this now,
Please don't jump off...now!
If you do, your parents will be really sad,
And your dad will be mad
At me!

Scientist spread his arms and legs out and grinned.

     Ralph jumped off.

He attempted to flap his wings, but he couldn't get them to work. He then began to free fall, approaching the hard ground.

Scientist dived off, and soon reached Ralph. He grabbed him.

"Okay, let's just stay together, all right?" A loose beam that had been held up by a crane slammed into Scientist.

     WHAM!

Scientist was knocked farther away, while Ralph had somehow managed to get on the beam without injury. He held on and looked around.

Scientist fell down, hit the fence surrounding the site, and then slammed into the ground. He quickly jumped up and looked at Ralph, who was backing up.

     "Get your gum here! Gum!"

Scientist looked over and saw a Mynci with a whole cart of bubble gum. He ran over to him and took almost all the gum.

"Thanks!" He then ran back into the construction site, stuffing the gum into his mouth.

"You're welcome!" The Mynci waved. "Hmm...maybe I should charge money for those..."

Scientist put the last stick of gum into his mouth, and chewed it all. He looked up and saw Ralph jump. Scientist blew all the gum in his mouth into a giant bubble, which slowly went up toward Ralph. Ralph was still trying to fly, when he hit the giant pink bubble.

     BOOM!

The entire bubble exploded, splattering chewed up gum everywhere, and covering Scientist with it. He looked around.

"Ralph? Hey Ralph, are you here?" He then felt something on his head. When he felt it, he realised that Ralph was stuck on his head.

"Let's go back home before anything else happens, okay?"

But from above, another voice came out.

"Oh great, you just dropped the peanut butter!"

A jumbo jar of peanut butter fell on Scientist, covering him and Ralph with it.

"Well, at least we don't have to worry about getting the gum off." He then slowly walked out of the construction site, as everyone stared at him.

***

Scientist pulled Ralph off his head, and washed him off with the garden hose. Because of the peanut butter, getting the gum off had been rather easy, even though they both stank of gum and peanut butter.

"From now on Ralph, how about you just stay inside your playpen?"

Ralph didn't respond, but Scientist picked him up, took him in the house (passing his boss who was still there), and put him inside the playpen. He then went into a storage closet upstairs and took out a television. He lifted it up, and took it to the room Ralph was in. After setting it up, he turned it on and took out a remote control.

"Let's see...here we go!" He turned it to the children's channel, and a large purple Chomby filled the screen.

"Hi there kids!" He said in an annoyingly big voice. "I'm Blarmy the purple Chomby!"

Ralph stared at the screen, his eyes blank. "Blarbly..." he mumbled.

Scientist waved a paw in front of his face. "Are you all right?" He stared at the screen. Suddenly his eyes turned blank, and he dropped his arms to his side. "Blarmy..."

Ralph instantly lost the blankness in his eyes and looked at Scientist, who sat down. Ralph pushed the playpen over, and walked out the open door.

Scientist was still staring at the screen, when it suddenly static was on the screen. He blinked, and looked around.

"Ralph?" He then saw the empty playpen.

     "Not again!"

Scientist instantly got up and ran out of the house. He was looking around, when it occurred to him where Ralph could be. Looking up, his fears were confirmed as Ralph leaped off the roof.

"Over here!" He spread out his arms just in time to catch the baby Eyrie. The impact knocked his glasses off his face, and while he was blinking nearsightedly, an unexpected blow hit him in the back.

Scientist stumbled over, and Ralph was snatched from his arm.

A fire Kyrii now had Ralph.

"Yes! I have the final thing I need now!"

     Scientist grabbed Ralph's feet. "Hey!"

The Kyrii stuck out two fingers and poked Scientist in the eyes.

"OW!" Scientist began to rub them, and the Kyrii was able to get away.

By the time Scientist had cleared his eyes and found his glasses, the Kyrii was long gone. But what he had forgotten was that Scientist Lupe...was a Lupe. Using his nose after picking up the Kyrii's scent, Scientist soon caught up with him.

The Kyrii was right inside a forest, looking at the outside of a small house. He walked inside, holding Ralph.

Scientist went after him and looked inside through a window. The Kyrii opened a door and then began to walk down some stairs.

Scientist slowly opened the door, and crept inside. He then slowly turned the knob again, slowly and carefully closed it, while making sure not to make a single noise.

     "PLEASE STATE THE PASSWORD!"

Scientist jumped, and whirled around. A small robot was facing him, and seemed to be waiting for him to answer.

     "Uh...well...the password? It's...that is..."

"CORRECT!" The robot beeped loudly a few times, and then a card came out of a slot. "HERE YOU GO. HAVE A NICE DAY!"

Scientist went over to the door he had seen the Kyrii enter, and tried to open it. It was locked, and he saw a card slot. He quickly swiped the card through it, and then tried to open the door again. This time it opened, and he slowly walked down the stairs.

"You do know I heard the robot, right?"

Scientist looked down and saw the Fire Kyrii.

"Here for the Eyrie, eh?" He whipped out A Million-Degree Sword.

"Yes." Scientist began to search his pockets, but was unable to find anything. "Do you have a spare weapon?"

"Sure." The Kyrii pulled out a Sword of Domar and tossed it to Scientist. He then swung his own Sword at Scientist.

Scientist grabbed his sword, and blocked the Kyrii's blow. He whirled his sword around and then swung at the Kyrii's side. But the Kyrii blocked it, grabbed his sword with both hands, and brought it down on Scientist's sword. It was knocked out of his paws, and then the Kyrii turned his Million Degree sword so that the flat part facing Scientist. He then swung it at him.

     WHACK!

The Kyrii then shoved him onto his back, and held the sword in front of Scientist.

"Do you have any last words?"

"Yes. Why do you need Ralph?"

"Why?" He rubbed his paws together. "You see, I can now use his tail feathers to write stories and articles for the Neopian Times!"

"Why not use a pencil, or a pen? Or even a computer?"

     The Kyrii paused. "Huh?"

"You don't need his tail feathers to write."

"But the trophy...it's a golden feather!"

     "It's just a trophy!"

The Kyrii picked up Scientist. "Oh...I didn't know that. Sorry about the whole thing."

"How about we just forget this ever happened?"

"Deal." The Kyrii went over a desk and picked up Ralph. He handed him to Scientist, who inspected him.

"YOU TOOK OUT A TAIL FEATHER ALREADY?"

"Yeah...but it should grow back. In...let's see, if I- Hey, where are you going?"

***

Scientist was back in front of his house. "Okay, don't panic!" He looked at his watch and saw the time was 2:53.

"AAAAAHHHHH!" He ran inside the house, holding an unusually still Ralph, and opened the first drawer he saw. In it were scissors, bits of string, a ruler, spare paper, several paperweights, and duct tape. He grabbed the duct tape.

"Am I that desperate?" He then remembered Richard's words. "Oh yeah!"

Scientist stepped outside with Ralph in his arms at 3:00, and saw Richard. "Hey Richard! Here he is, perfectly fine."

Richard took Ralph. "Hmm...he seems to be fine..." He looked at Scientist. "Well, you did a good job. Thanks!" He stuck out a paw.

Scientist took his paw and shook it. "You're welcome." He looked at the watch on his wrist. "Oh, look at the time! I really have to get busy with experiments and stuff. Bye!" He went inside his house and closed the door. He was about to go to his bed for sleep, when he heard Richard.

"Wait...since when did Ralph have a BLUE tail feather?"
