Swim for a Cause

Though they aren't advertised enough in Neopia, there are other fundraisers than that for the con artist, Tombola Man. This story tells the account of one fundraiser performed solely by a friendly Krawk.

Though they aren't advertised enough in Neopia, there are other fundraisers than that for the con artist, Tombola Man. This story tells the account of one fundraiser performed solely by a friendly Krawk.

Ambidextro was a Krawk, and by no means was he a normal one. He was always a great friend with any Kois that swam over to Krawk Island, inviting them into his manor for a great feast of take-out from the Golden Dubloon. But when Maraqua was destroyed by the whirlpool, the Kois stopped coming. Ambidextro grew lonely, and he longed to see his friends again. Many of his neighbours shrugged off the destruction of Maraqua, others were slightly concerned, but not as much as Ambidextro. He went door-to-door, collecting pledges for a great fundraiser to aid in the reconstruction of the great city.

"Hello, Sir," he would say to the people he talked to. "I am raising Neopoints to aid in the reconstruction of Maraqua. I'm sure you know of the tragedy that befell its inhabitants. I am going to swim from the Northeast shore of this island, and swim all the way to Mystery Island, and back home. Would you be interested in pledging?"

Pretty soon, Ambidextro had raised over 700 dubloons from his friends and neighbours He took the dubloons to the Auction House in Neopia Central and sold them, amassing quite a large fortune for the Maraqua Reconstruction Fund (MRCF). Now all that was left was to swim. It would take training, and every day, Ambidextro would swim for hours in the warm waters north of Krawk Island.

Finally the day came; Day one of the Month of Swimming. That date only seemed fitting. A large crowd had gathered on the coast to see Ambidextro off. Ambidextro donned his goggles, and gave the thumbs up to his buddy Zissel, who would boat beside him, for safety reasons. Zissel shot the starter's pistol into the air, and Ambidextro dove off the pier. The water was warm, and the wind was calm. "Perfect swimming conditions, a Koi would say," thought Ambidextro. Putting one arm in front of the other he swam vigorously closer to his goal.

At around the third quarter of the first leg, things started to go wrong. Ambidextro noticed menacing shadows below him, swimming in circles. He thought they were playful Flotsams. If only they were. A rather large red Jetsam surfaced and tackled Ambidextro. Lucky for him, Zissel had seen the shadows before Ambidextro did, and had pulled out a bag full of Battle Potatoes. Zissel started barraging the Jetsam with a rain of spuds. The school of Jetsam fled to lick their wounds. Ambidextro approached the boat.

"Gee, thanks a bunch Zissel, you really saved my skin there!"

"Oh, anytime Dex, that's why you hired me, didn't ya? How about a drink? I got some nice Krawkade here for ya," Zissel offered. Dex gulped down the drink like nothing, swam away from the boat, and kept swimming towards the goal.

At long last, mere minutes before nightfall, Dex crawled onto the shore of Mystery Island.

"Ambidextro of Krawk Island!" a coconut man greeted him. "We were told of your epic journey just an hour ago! Congratulations on making it this far! We here have amassed a contribution for your fundraiser. Now please, eat all you need, for as your schedule says, you leave for home in a half hour!"

Dex ate until his stomach bulged. "I was hoping that your Island could contribute a team of warriors to protect me on the way back. I was assailed by a group of Jetsam on my way here, and that considerably slowed me down," Dex said to the Coconut Man sitting at the opposite end of the table. "And also, I would be grateful if you could follow me with your helicopter, to light my journey home. I leave this to your discretion, though, Sir"

"We would spare these things to you without your asking. You are doing so much for the Kois that have found refuge here on our island," He replied. Dex was overjoyed. He was really helping his friends by doing this.

As the half hour break ended, Dex, Zissel, the Koi warriors and many natives approached the shore. The helicopter took off into the air from deep in the jungle, and hovered above, shining the spot light on Dex and company. With a wave and a smile, Dex leapt in the water, and started swimming back home. Zissel revved up his boat and reared up behind Dex. The Kois all took formation around and under Dex and Zissel. The natives cheered and clapped. The helicopter flew high overhead shining light on the party, illuminating the ripples around them. Ambidextro was more energised now than before he started his swim; he credited this to the many Muntandos he had eaten. But nonetheless he swam all out towards Krawk Island.

"Come on Dex, mate! You can do it! Stroke! Stroke! Haha! You're doin' it!" Zissel yelled to his friend. Dex looked down through the clear water, and saw the Kois swimming heedlessly around him. One looked up at him, and gave him a big fins up.

The weather stayed clear, all through Dex's swim. At long last the familiar shores of Krawk Island, glowing in the moonlight, approached. He could make out a very large group of Neopets gathered around the pier where Ambidextro jumped off of that afternoon. He had made it. All together he had raised over 700,000 Neopoints for the MRCF, and nobody was happier about this than Dex.

The End

All of this story is purely fiction, except for the pets Ambidextro and Zissel14, and that Tombola Man is a con artist. There is no MRCF.
