I Don't Understand! by computergirl123 | |
SOUP KITCHEN - Ahh, yes. Neopets. Everybody knows about them. They have hit
the U.S. like a ton of bricks. Everybody knows somebody who plays it. Millions
of people have joined. But do they know what Neopets is really all about? Neopets
is about adopting virtual pets and caring for them, and that's what people do.
You play games and earn items and make money to care for them. And most people
are really obsessed with moneymaking. But I bet nobody has really thought about
what Neopets ARE.
Neopets - An entirely new world
Neopets are made for all sorts of people, but some things I don't understand.
I realise that Neopia is an entirely new world, but that doesn't mean they should
defy the laws of nature. When you get a Neopet, it starts out as an egg. If
you have a Grarrl or a Shoyru, that is understandable, but a Lupe? Or a Poogle?
Perhaps the Earth Faerie was to lazy to change that. But does that make Lupes
reptiles? Or are Lupes cold-blooded? Frankly, I don't know. But what about the
sea going creatures like Peophins? Are Peophins reptile or mammal? Have mammal
and half fish must really cut into its social abilities for sure.
Faeries - What are THEY for?
Now everybody who plays Neopets knows about Faeries. They sell for THOUSANDS
of Neopoints. But what do they do? Do they watch over the citizens of Neopia?
Or do they care about their element? Sure, some are obvious like the Earth Faerie
and the Dark and Light Faeries, but what about Fire? Or Air? Surely they most
do something, or contribute to something? Maybe they are just there to be caught
by the evil Balthazar, which brings me to my next subject of wonderment.
The Bad Guys of Neopia - What's their problem?
Now clearly everybody knows that nothing is perfect, even this online Utopia
of happy pets and players. But what I the motive of these evil fiends? The Pant
Devil steals. Why does he steal? And when he steals the item, where does it
go to? Perhaps a hidden lair of items where all the Pant Devils put their stolen
treasure, or maybe a house or den for every little Pant Devil to put their goodies.
Who knows? We should put someone on the case of that right away. Or how about
that Monocerous? Where did he come from? He doesn't look at all like any of
the Neopets, except the little Moehog. Maybe the Monocerous is a deranged little
Moehog that enjoys the taste of its own species' flesh. Or maybe a Dark Faerie
was out on an evil rampage. Who knows. I seem to be the only one who cares.
One last case of misunderstanding in this field: The Swamp Ghoul. He has been
on Neopets for as long as anyone can remember, but what is he there for? What
does he do? He lives in swamps and leads people astray? Does he eat Neopets
that come into the evil mists? Or is he the weird cousin of the Pant Devil?
Put someone on that too.
Guilds - Just a place to hangout?
Guilds are one thing that everybody has a different opinion on. A recent attachment
to Neopets, most people are in a guild. But what were guilds made for? Are they
clubs for people with the same interest? Most people think so. And yet, some
people join guilds because of bribes. These bribes are caused by the insane
need for a certain guild to have more members. Is that what guilds are? A competition
to see who can get the most people to join? That's what I have seen in quite
a few places, not naming any guild in particular. Other guilds are entirely
RPG, where imaginary battles, wars, and even romance can take place. These are
pretty popular too, but the romance thing is a little sickening. What I really
wonder about guilds is the initial purpose of guilds. First I thought they were
for chatting, but then there is the Chat page. Then I thought it was a place
to help people, but in reality, newbies are hated for their constant questioning.
Now I am just settling to believe that guilds are places for people to have
fun and just talk about the theme of the guild, if there is one.
Neopia - What does it look like?
I understand that they have maps of the entire world and the market place, but
what do the guilds and shops look like? When I say shops, I mean the shops that
people own. Are they little teepees like pictured in the market place? Or are
they seperate buildings placed in convenient spots? Personally, I don't really
care. Maybe the shops are just Web sites. Now guilds. Most people think that guilds
are buildings and look similar to a hotel. Or a dance club. Or a forest. The guild
has this, the guild has that. I have seen many fights start just off that subject
in my own guild. But does it really matter to Neopets what anything looks like?
Perhaps to the really serious people who are totally addicted to Neopets, yes.
But for those people who are not quite into it yet, the guilds are just a cute
little assortment of colours placed on a screen. Another curious things to wonder
about is NeoHomes. They look like they appear, right? Then how can you look into
another persons NeoHome? Wouldn't that be an invasion of privacy? Not if you're
not in it, I guess.
Neopets - Are they Sentient?
Now for those of you who don't know what sentient means, go get a dictionary
and look it up. Basically (for those too lazy to get a dictionary ;)) it means
that you know how to talk and do math and all that stuff. Humans are sentient,
dogs are not. Now Neopets, they can talk, they can do math (I think) and they
can do everything a human can do. So why do we need to care for them? Even a
normal dog can get their own food. Why can't a Neopet? They can talk. They can
hunt. They fight in the Battledome! So why can't they get their own food? Perhaps
Neopets are smart enough to talk like a college scholar, but are not smart enough
to take a few Neopoints. and walk down to the shop. Maybe they just have a terrible
sense of direction and would walk around aimlessly if someone wasn't there to
guide them. Or maybe, just maybe, they are still babies, but know how to talk
from birth. Who knows? Only Adam and Donna I guess.
Petpets - A pet for a pet?
Everybody loves Petpets! But what do they do? They help in the Battledome
But what else? To show it off? Or ,recently, to turn into an adult? And it leads
back into my Sentient Neopet misunderstanding. If Neopets can take care of a
pet of their own, why cant they get their own food? And what do Petpets eat?
It seems very very strange that a Petpet can last forever without food. Same
with the Neopet Oh well. Just another thing I don't understand.
Those are some of the things I don't understand in the world of Neopia. Maybe
they will make a section dedicated to the people who don't understand these
things. |
