Zeke Speaks: Thoughts from a Library Legend - Review V

by missphd

LENNY LIBRARY - In my never-ending quest for new books to read, I often am reminded of some of the great older books in Neopia. I think this week I will share some of my favourite old books and what I think makes them so special. And, lucky for you, they are still all available from time to time in The Magical Book Shop.

Basic Mathematics
Now, I must be upfront with you about this book… it isn't all glossy photos and heart-warming tales of young Neopets who save the world with their knowledge of mathematical formulas. Basically, it is an old-fashioned primer. Designed to teach you the fundamentals of math and equip you to use that math in practical situations, it provides us with a simple, but effective tool for learning that thing which many of us dread so much…MATH!

Now don't get me wrong. If you read this book, you will NOT be a mathematical genius overnight, but you WILL be able to help your owner with things like shopping and budgets. The book doesn't go into higher math like Skellington Formulas or Powell Theories, but you will definitely be able to handle addition, subtraction, multiplication and division when you are done.

The thing that makes this book a good teaching guide is that it explains HOW math works, and let me tell you… that ain't easy! It will walk you through simple problems and show you how to everything is suppose to look on paper. I probably went through 25 of my favourite Rainbow Neopets Notebooks just learning the math, and my Aisha Pencil Sharpener broke twice! So, if you are serious about learning math, get your supplies ready, get this book and get ready for serious learning!

Reading this book just for fun isn't going to happen. But, if you are in the mood to learn and want to become a more well-rounded Neopet, then pick this book up!

Overall, my rating for Basic Mathematics is: 4.5 stars

My First Book
If you haven't read a lot of books, but are looking for a good place to start, then My First Book is for you! This is the most basic book in Neopia, and as the book jacket says, it is "Ideal for the first time reader."

The book basically consists of three short stories about Neopia that not only get you started on reading, but that also teach you a little bit about our world. You will read about a Shoyru named FallenFlamez who is very mischievous, a Uni named teardropkisses who has great adventures, and a thoroughly entertaining tale about a purple Poogle named Octavian_Night.

The good thing about this book is that the stories aren't very long, they use very simple language and you will actually be entertained as well! My favourite story was about Octavian_Night. I don't want to give too much away, but let me tell you…this Poogle was very special indeed. The story is about his journey looking for a way to become the strongest, fastest Poogle in all of Neopia. He has some trouble along the way as well as some triumphs, and when you are finished reading the tale of his journey, you feel all warm inside. And, if you ask me… that's all you can hope for in a good story!

So, if reading scares you a little, or if you are not the best reader out there, pick up this book and give it a whirl. I guarantee you won't be disappointed, and when you are done, you will be ready for other fun books as well.

Overall, my rating for My First Book is: 4 stars

Billy Blue Hat
This book is another book for beginners, but don't let it fool you! It may be a simple tale about the adventures of Billy Blue Hat, but it is truly a GREAT read!

Billy Blue Hat is the affection nickname for the central character of this story: Billy the Jubjub. He got the nickname when he was very young. On his first birthday, he got a blue top hat as a present from a friend, and once he put it on, he refused to ever take it off! Wearing his favourite blue hat, Billy was convinced that he was a magician, and would travel around Neopia entertaining people and Neopets alike with his awful magic shows.

My favourite part of the story was the chapter in which Billy loses his hat! Without his hat, Billy felt unable to perform even the simplest magic trick! He felt he had lost his calling in life. Saddened by this event, Billy sets out on a new quest... not to be a magician any more, but to get his hat back!! I was rolling on the floor at some of the ways Billy went about getting his hat back, and I am sure you will be tickled pink as well!

While the story is short, it is definitely full of fun and surprises as Billy performs his magic around Neopia, loses his hat and then finds his way in the world. He gets to meet a lot of new friends, and in the end learns a very valuable lesson about magic, his blue hat and most importantly, himself!

Overall, my rating for Billy Blue Hat is: 5 stars
