How to Spend NP

by mocha397

NEOPIAN MARKETPLACE - There are a lot of articles out there about how to make Neopoints. Whole websites are dedicated to showing Neopets users the path to riches. Many guild leaders claim that, if you join their guild, they can show you how to become a Neomillionare in just a few weeks. The truth of the matter is that everyone makes Neopoints differently. Some of us can't buy from the official shops because of our slow-as-molasses-Internet connection. Some of us are particularly good at certain games so we play them everyday.

Spending NP is a different story. Virtually everyone can spend NP doing the same things. You don't need a fast connection, good hand-eye coordination, or tons of free time. What you do actually need, however, is Neopoints. (Yes, to spend NP, you NEED NP. Shocking, isn't it?) How many NP you need before you can start the "Big Spending," as I like to call it, is up to you. I'd say the time to start spending is when you get to a point when you really don't know or care about how many NP you have, when the eagerness to get as rich as possible has sort of died away. Then you know it's time for retirement.

What do you do when you retire? Unfortunately, there are no golf courses, cruise ships, or sandy beaches to relax on in the world of Neopia. However, once you're ready to spend all that hard-earned NP there are a good number of options. Below I've listed, in no particular order, and described all the big money-spending schemes.

NeoHomes- Oh yes, NeoHomes will zap that spare change right out of your wallet! They will also give you an opportunity to design, build, add extensions to, and decorate a house for your pets. To build a NeoHome, besides NP (duh!), you're going to need furniture and perhaps some gardening items, if you've got a green thumb. The first step to creating a home for your pets is to go to Pet Central and click on NeoHome. From here you will apply for land for your NeoHome. Since I never really finished building my NeoHome the only advice I can give you is this: Don't build your home in Faerieland! This costs 25,000 NP. You could save those Neopoints and use them to splurge on some nice furniture.

Galleries- Personally, this is my favorite way to spend those NP that are just burning a hole in your pocket. For those of you who don't know, galleries are shops people use to display a collection of items. For some good examples, check out the Gallery Spotlight. Your first step in opening a gallery is to create a new account. If you already have more than one account I would suggest using a spare one to create a gallery.

The key to a great gallery isn't really how many items you have. What you really need is a great theme, and to come up with a theme you need inspiration. Of course you can visit other shops, and ask your Neofriends for some ideas, but I believe that the best way to find inspiration is to take a look at the Shopkeepers. (Go to the Create/Edit your shop page to do this.) That might sound odd to you, so let me explain. For almost every gallery or themed shop there is an appropriate Shopkeeper. Therefore, why couldn't a Shopkeeper give you a few ideas? After looking at just a few Shopkeepers I came up with the following themes: weather, spooky/haunted items, hats, bows/bowties. Do some of those things sound odd? Well, they probably do, but if you want something original you will have to think of something that's a little weird. Of course, if originality isn't necessarily the most important thing for you, then feel free to make a gallery of plushies, petpets, or items with the name of a certain species of pet. If you want to get a good amount of items in your gallery without paying a whole bunch of Neopoints from the get-go then simply start small. Buy relatively cheap items first then move your way up to more expensive things as your gallery gets bigger and bigger. Who knows, you may even win a shiny new trophy if you submit your shop to the Gallery Spotlight.

Battledome- The Battledome is extremely expensive, but hey, this article IS about spending NP. I'm a wimp, I mean pacifist, so I don't battle, but I will tell you that if you're going to challenge someone to a fight, or even if you're going to be fighting Punch Bob in the one-player Dome you need to be prepared. Check out the Battlepedia, read past Neopian articles about the Battledome, and check out some of the numerous fansites out there. Remember to always visit the Healing Springs as well!

Book Award/Gourmet Club- I've grouped these two competitions together because they work on the same premise. Whichever pets have read the most books or eaten the most gourmet food gets a trophy. There are gold, silver, and bronze trophies. All you need to do to "enter" either of these competitions is to read your pet a book or feed him gourmet food. To see if you're on the high score list for either of these go to Pet Central. If you're having trouble finding books or gourmet food that you haven't already given to your pet, try looking in a gallery or visiting a fansite.

Lab Ray- The Lab Ray is located in The Secret Laboratory which can be accessed by collecting all the lab map pieces. As most of you already know, you can visit the lab once per day, and something random will happen to your pets. They can be painted, turn into a mutant, lose stats, increase stats, change species, or change gender. If you're bored and feel like taking some risks then the Lab Ray is pretty fun. You can also use the ray to help pets from the pound. After you gain access to the lab you can adopt a pet and use the Lab Ray on the pet once a day. Once it is painted, becomes mutant, or is changed into a limited edition pet you can abandon it at the pound. Someone else will surely adopt it because of its rarity. If you already have four pets in your account you can open another one to paint pets with. If you'd like to be part of a whole group of people who like to do this, you should check out some guilds, like the one I'm in. You can also help to adopt pets by using paintbrushes, potions, and magical plushies to paint or change them.

Gifts/Charity- It is better to give than to receive so why not use that extra NP to help others. You can donate to your guild (if you are a member of a guild which has a donation shop), give to the money tree, donate to Tombola when he runs out of cash (I'm crossing my fingers in hopes that the Tiki Tack Man will show up soon), or you can take a more direct route. You can simply send items to fellow Neopians. You can visit some galleries and see if any of the owners keep a wishlist. If you have a lot of Neofriends you could buy them presents for every single holiday. You could also buy presents on the birthdays of your friends or members of your guild.

Well, that's all folks. As you can tell, there are many different ways to spend NP, some that I didn't even list. I sincerely hope you enjoyed this article, and that it perhaps gave you some ideas. Feel free to Neomessage me with commits, questions, or criticisms.
