Jurples - A Guide to Word Poker

by babydragon282

KRAWK ISLAND - During my time here on Neopets I have read many issues of the Neopian Times -- and many articles. Several of them have been guides for various games such as: Cheat, Meerca Chase and... hmm... I am sure there have been several, but that's all I can come up with at the moment...

Anyhoo, today of all days, a Sunday evening, I was reading The Neopian Times and it occurred to me that it's high time I wrote an article. It didn't take much thought to decide to write a guide to Word Poker -- my latest game obsession ever since it came out. Now, I faithfully play it 3 times a day when I'm at home. I have also become fussier, and will restart the game if my round score is not upwards of 60, (unless I already have a high score from other rounds), if my first round score is less than 80, or if at the end of the 6 rounds my score is less than 600. I can play for several hours until I get my 3 scores. I told you it has become a bit of an obsession!

I'd like to consider myself an expert at this game -- but I always like it best when my mom stands over my shoulder and helps! After all, when a week or two ago "Better Than You" featured Word Poker, I nearly flipped out! I had never thought of that -- I was merely awaiting the day Word Poker was the featured game -- *hint* *hint*. When I first got to the page fewer than 200 people had beaten Keeka's high score, so I figured I had a chance. After all, I had just checked the news and seen nothing, but then I opened something in a new window and then hit "Home" (for me Neopets new features) and there was the updated news. So I played a couple times and finally achieved a score of 780. A few seconds after I got my 780 NPs I had a Neomail from theneopetsteam!

"CONGRATULATIONS!!! Your score of 780 beats the score of 700 by Keeka the Kadoatie in the BETTER THAN YOU competition! You have won 3,000 NP, a cool trophy and a great item! Well done!"

I also have a high score of 1038 to be proud of. At the time I was less than 100 away from being on the high score table. Boy, gloating is fun!

Anyway, having made my point, I feel I have the necessary knowledge to instruct you in the path of greatness! (I have always wanted to say that!)

First of all I'd like to introduce you all to the wonderful world of Word Poker.

"In Word Poker you are given a scrambled up word and have to make as many words as possible out of it within a time limit. There are six categories that you must score points in; three-letter words, four-letter words, five-letter, full house, flush and wild. After each 60 second round has finished, click on the category that you did the best in, and that score will be saved. The game is over after all six rounds are up."

Personally, I am unconvinced of the accuracy of all of this. There have been several occasions when I could only make 3 letter words, much less a word out of all the letters.

If you can make a word using all the letters in any one of these 3 sets, let me know, please!

I A A M N L N M HINT: It's not mailman there is still an "N"
I R I C C T B E
O D F O X R Q N

I believe it is merely random letters and not a scrambled word -- but that's my opinion.

For those of you who don't know much about the game, you can read the rest of the introduction on the Word Poker game page.

As stated above, the object of the game is to take the eight random letters and make words out of them.

Seems fairly simple, right? Not when half of them are S's. The payout is equal to your score. For example, getting 234 pts will give you 234 NPs. Since the letters are different every time, I can't just tell you all the words, but I can give you some pointers.

First of all, my favorite technique is to take sounds and then add letters to them. For example, every time I have an A, E and T, I will make EAT, ATE and TEA. And then I make them plural if I can, which adds EATS and TEAS (but not ATES!), as well as EAST and SEAT. Then, I take the other letters to form things like LATE, DATE, and SLATE. I also do the same thing with E, R and A. With those I make EAR, EARS, SEAR, TEAR, EARL, EARN (if I can) ARE, DARE... and ERA, ERAS. I do a similar thing with IRE and ORE.

There is also ICE and ACE, plus their plurals and past tenses. I also always use the sound OLE, even though that isn't a word by itself. I also, when I think of it, do ROE, ROES, ROSE and RUE, RUES, RUSE. While 3-letter words don't seem to give you many points compared to other sections, if you get 20 you are looking at close to 100 pts.

Rearranging letters that are already in a word can give you lots more. LOT, LOTS, LOST, SLOT etc. With four simple letters one can even make: pot, POTS, POST, top, TOPS, STOP, SPOT, opt and OPTS. Six different four-letter words out of only four letters!

Sometimes adding an "S" to a word can give you more than two words: CONE, CONES, SCONE. Tacking the "S" onto the front often leads to more words too. If you're stuck, try looking at the words in the list and looking for sounds and words you missed.

Also, don't forget that Neopets words count, too! Although I haven't had much success yet and I await the day I can make SHOYRU or DRAIK, there are some that seem to come up now and then. I find these most helpful. I use KOI and NOIL frequently. There is also IXIS, but for some reason I can't put just one! (IXI) I have tried a couple times to make GEB, another petpet, but it won't take that either.

My last bit of advice is: If you're stuck, try making up words that are plausible. You just might discover SHRIVE or CLINE. If you follow these hints, believe it or not, the pink Elephante Pirate will actually beam at you with pride as you type w o r d s furiously. H a v e f u n, g o o d l u c k a n d w r i t e t o m e w i t h y o u r s u c c e s s s t o r i e s!
