The Not So Perfect Present

by battlesunn

Shelleylou the golden Gelert laid on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Her long, ribbon like ears twitched and stiffened as she tuned into the sounds of her owner, battlesunn, cooking dinner. She rolled over and groaned, staring at her sleeping Puppyblew. She sighed, loud and long, trying to make Mordecai awaken and feel some sort of sympathy for her. Mordecai slept on. Shelly regarded her desk calendar critically. The large red circle decorating the date, the 14, symbolised her upcoming 1,000 hours party.

"What a silly waste of time!" she griped.

Most pets enjoyed their 1,000 hours party, it meant food, attention and presents. Shelly, however, was dreading it! Why? Simply because this Gelert hated being the centre of attention, disliked most foods and absolutely despised having to pretend to love the lousy presents that she always received. What's more, Shelly didn't want anything for her 1,000 hours party. She had everything that she could ever want...

A sudden loud crash roused Shelly out of her thoughts, Ringo, her uncoordinated little brother, (well, sister now.) --had just come home from the lab ray. Shelly smirked, like most pets, she wasn't particularly fond of her little brother and enjoyed seeing him in different colours, bodies or genders. Shelly galloped down the stairs to the main hall and gasped in shock. Ringo, who had gone to ray as a striped Peophin, had come home as a yellow buzz! It was too much. Shelly burst out laughing jeering and pointing at poor little Ringo. A solitary tear slid down Ringo's hideous face.

"Itzz not funny! How would you like to be a yellow buzz..."

Just then, battlesunn came into the room. Upon seeing Ringo, she dropped the plate that she was holding.

"Oh my... Poor Ringo! Don't worry sweetums, the lab ray will probably change you tomorrow."

Ringo sniffed and sulked up to his room, pausing to cast a frosty glare at Shelly. Battlesunn turned to the golden Gelert

"So Shelly, have you thought about what you want for your party?"

"No. I think the whole idea is dumb."

"Shelly! Don't talk to me that way, young Gelert Now go up to your room until I call you, we're going to the beach tonight with Zigzagbart's pets. Shelly brightened.

"Really? Marlly and Poloroe and Flurry and Zav? Are they all coming?"

Battlesunn chuckled. "Yes Shelly, they're all coming."

Shelly wagged her long tail happily. It would be so much fun! Maybe Poloroe would not what to ask for her 1,000 hours party...

"Catch the frisbee Shelly!"

Zigzagbart reared back and tossed a blue Frizbee high into the air. Shelly ran after it, her legs pumping, but KillerFurry, Zigzagbart's Starry Lupe, caught it first.

"Flurry! What have I told you about waiting your turn? Why don't you go swimming instead."

"Okay mom!" Killerflurry smiled, and went bounding off to the surf, jumping and barking happily. He crashed into the water, sending up a huge tidal wave. He paddled around happily for a few minutes, but then froze. A dark fin had just cut through the water. Flurry froze, treading water carefully. The fin resurfaced, sending Flurry into a panic. Just then, the fin stood straight up, followed by the head and grinning of face of Marlfox50, the lab ray user who was currently a shadowed jetsam. He chuckled.

     "Gotcha, Flurry."

     "Did not!"

They continued bickering, splashing water at each and shouting insults. Poloroe smiled, watching from the shore. Poloroe was an impressive Faerie Gelert, quite sentimental and peaceful. Shelly trotted up to him and plucked down next to him.

"So Polly, what do you think I could ask for my 1,000 hours party?"

Poloroe shrugged. "I dunno, what do you think?"

Shelly sighed. "Well, I'm already painted a really nice colour, I have a great petpet, I'm pretty strong, I have a bunch of abilities... etc. I really don't know what to ask for!"

Poloroe furrowed his brow. "Plushies, other toys or weapons?"

Shelly shook her head. "I've kind of outgrown toys, and I have a full set of excellent equipment."

     "Well, I'm out of ideas."

Shelly sighed, staring at her Ringo, who was happily playing in the sand. He seemed content enough for a pet that used the lab ray, why, just the other day he had gained five max hit points! Suddenly, Shelly got an idea.

     "I've got it!"

     Poloroe was startled. "What?!!"

"The idea for the perfect gift!"

     "What is it?"

     "Well..."

It was the day of Shelly's 1,000 hours party. She had gone through with the food and attention. Now she got her present. She received a box of crayons from Ringo, and a Faerie's fortune scratchcard from Zigzagbart and her pets. Now it was time for battlesunn's present, which she had already decided on. Battlesunn smiled at the party guests, and took Shelly by the paw. They were headed towards the lab ray. Shelly had told battlesunnher desired present, she wanted one zap with the ray. The two stood at the entrance to the ray, and battlesunn confirmed this "present" once more.

"You're sure you want to do this?"

"Yes! I might become really strong!"

"But you might change gender, or colour, or species! You could lose stats too..."

     "I WANT TO DO IT!"

     "Okay, okay."

Battlesunn led Shelly into the dark room, staring uneasily at all the devices on the wall. At last they reached the actual ray, and the Scorchio doctor. Shelly sat down in front of the ray, and closed her eyes. ZAP! The ray shot her, and she felt no pain, just a little tickle. She looked at her reflection in the mirror, her long gangly Lenny legs, her thin Lenny wings and her long Lenny beak. She turned to her owner.

"Uh, battlesunn? I think I have an idea for two more presents... a Gelert morphing potion and a golden paint brush!"
