Tactful Trading

by qtpieluvr

A couple of months ago, my first article on trading hit the streets... errrrm.... computer screens. Since then, much has changed, not only in the Neopian economy, but in the way the average Neopian makes their money. So I figured why not write another article? Dealing with the trading post on a day to day basis, I have observed many things that make for a successful trader.

Know what you're dealing with

By researching the item(s) that you are planning to buy or sell, both sides of the trade can be more successful. More often than not, people ask for outlandish amounts in their Wishlist. This occurs in part because of wishful thinking, but also because people don't take the time to see if the price on their item has changed since the last time they checked. On the same note, many trades go through in which the asking price is far below the actual value. This most certainly does not make for a good trade.

To Neomail or not to Neomail... that is the question

As a general rule of thumb, cheap items don't require a Neomail, whereas expensive ones often do. Why, you ask? First, with cheap items (buyables) there is a general "set" value for the item's value, which can be found on the Shop Wizard. However, with expensive items (unbuyables) there is no real Shop Wizard value. This usually means that there will have to be some haggling. Even if the set price is put in the wishlist, it is often a good idea to Neomail anyway, so as not to tie up your NP and items for an unreasonably long time. Of course, don't be excessive in Neomails, especially if the seller has given you an answer. While it is always important to be very friendly, over doing it or whining can get really annoying (I know, I've been on BOTH sides for that one).

Which price is which?

One of the most difficult task is pricing items. With buyables, going to the Shop Wizard and assessing the values not only of your items but of the items you want in return is a good way to start. Generally, these two values should be about equal, so you get bids and so you don't get ripped off. With unbuyables, the task of pricing is a little more difficult. Looking at other lots on the Trading Post is generally a good way to begin. However, it's important to note that just because there are items priced at, say, 1,200,000 NP, if they aren't selling after a few days at that price, then the item's value is actually under that 1,200,000 NP. I won't go into that anymore, as it is just the basic concept of supply and demand. if there are any questions, feel free to Neomail me.

Finally, one more pricing tip: the word auto actually means automatic. Therefore, the wording of your wishlist should be given special consideration because if you say a price is auto, anyone who offers that or more should technically get the item, no questions asked.

One final word

Pleeeeeeease be considerate of others :). As anonymous as computers may be, there are human beings behind them. NP aren't real, and neither are items. This site is just for fun, so have a great time! :)

I hope this helps, and will hopefully fill Neopia with tons of people who can trade with ease and fun!
