Holding steady at 352 books read and not having much luck in the Book Hunt
this week, I turned back to two old favourites (and one horrible read that I
want to warn you about later) to pass the time.
Gelert on Treasure Island
I wanted to jump on this book review right away and warn you from the beginning…SKIP
THIS BOOK! My owner tried to get me to read this rag three times last week before
finally giving up and shredding it into my dinner. I will often re-read some
of my favourite books, and my absolute refusal to eat dinner that night should
tell you how much it pained me to read it the first time.
The book jacket was my first clue that this was going to be a horrible book.…
"It has been days since the shipwreck, Scar had hung on to the barrel for
dear life. At last land was in sight and he collapsed exhausted on the sandy
shore..."
Now, that did NOT make me want to read this book, but I dove in anyway hoping
that this Scar character would turn out to be a cool guy, but boy was I wrong!
This book went into painstaking detail about Scar's float on the high seas,
and his struggle with a rough and tumble Jetsam named ShockSword. It went on
to detail Scar's trouble adjusting to island life and his encounters with a
crazy group of Myncis that he nearly spared his life for in a selfless acts
of courage.
The book did a fair job of detailing Scar's time on dry land, but the end
was kind of cheesy. I won't tell you too much, but read the title and you can
probably think of the ending on your own! I think that if you haven't read many
books, and you don't mind shifting uncomfortably in your chair for a few hours…
give it a shot! But me, I'd rather eat it than read it!
Overall, my rating for Gelert on Treasure Island is: 1 star
Sinister Skeith
Okay, I will admit right up front that this is one of my all time favourites
I will read it over-and-over again, take it on trips with me and read in the
lobby of our hotel, I will even give copies of this book to friends!
Maybe it is my fondness for the Secret Skeith Society (duh!) or just the fact
that I really like "darker" books, but this book tells it like it is, and I
can respect that. Not ever having known any of the Tough Guys as we call them,
I can't say that I know of any world domination plans, but hey…being the 26th
most popular pet in Neopia doesn't exactly put me at the top of anyone's Top
10 List.
I did like reading the theories though, and seeing where some of the Tough
Guys think things will go if it ever came to that, but what I liked more was
the section of the book on Skeith Motives. I even read passages from this chapter
to my owner and often highlight sections of this chapter when I give it as a
gift. Knowing why I do the things I do helped her a lot. She even understands
my book obsession more now!
The section on Darkest Secrets Revealed was a little silly if you ask me.
Most of the stuff in that section was definitely not "secret" and some was down
right nuts! Like the chapter on how Skeiths really like Moehogs actually made
me snort out loud!
Overall this is an awesome read for any species, but if you are a Skeith (or
the owner of one!) definitely pick a copy of this book up!! Pick up two!
Overall, my rating for Sinister Skeith is: 5 stars
All About Water Faeries
I am almost embarrassed to admit this is one of my favourite books, but my fondness
for soft, small, blue things makes this book a delightful read. The full colour
photos make it even more enjoyable, and sometimes I skip the text all together!
Definitely more interesting than the other faeries, these beautiful and mysterious
creatures fascinate pets as well as owners from all over Neopia. The book detailed
several known water faeries and even some less well known ones.
Knowing a bit about these elusive creatures makes traveling more fun! Catching
a glimpse of Nereid off the coast of Mystery Island or meeting one of the more
high-profile faeries is definitely more possible after reading this book.
Despite the small size of this book, and its quick read, I often leave it
out on the coffee table at my house because of the light nature of the book.
And the pictures make it perfect for a quick glimpse into another world.
Overall, my rating for All About Water Faeries is: 5 stars |
