Spend, Sell, Save - Surviving the Neopian Marketplace

by thunderdragonau

Every Neopian, from newbie to millionaire, has at some time gone through the hassle of trying to get the best deal on the Shop Wizard or trying to earn a bit of extra cash by selling off those old Battledome items. Everyone can be a millionaire... all it takes is some smart investments made in the right places.

Items are retiring all the time, generally when items are retired they begin to become rare which means there is more demand. When there is more demand, the prices rise as people struggle to get hold of the remainder of the items, until there are very little remaining and even less people that can afford them. I was lucky enough to have my friend tell me that the treasure hunt was taken down and we both bought a considerably large amount of space maps, I later sold them for more than double what I paid originally.

A lot of you are probably thinking, "Well, I have a 56k modem, how am I supposed to be that fast?" The fact is, I also have the 56k problem and my ISP is often horrible as far as staying connected at peak times goes. I have often found myself at a restock just about to get that rare pets pet and then my connection is instantly terminated. Watching the market is the solution for you, you never need to worry about other people, except when you find a target then you need to act, the space of time you have to act is normally in between two minutes and an hour, so have your cash ready and your browser on the wizard.

The Shop Wizard is truly your best friend. Due to the amount of shops on the wizard you don't really need to worry about someone else taking that elusive bargain that you have been looking for, that is if you act straight away. If a shop takes too long to load, be patient, don't press "stop" half way because you may have to click refresh for the link to buy the item to appear and that just wastes time. When you are using the Wiz to look for good deals try to just look for one or two things over a time period of a few days, watch them rise and fall and learn how those particular items works in the market. Invest in the item if you're sure, if you are uncertain however, watch it some more or move to a different item. Three things should influence your choice in items, how much time you have, how many Neopoints you have and of course, your understanding of how the item moves in the market. All these are equally important for you to be successful.

Finally, I have prepared some hints and tips to give you that extra edge:

PetPets and NeoHome garden items right now are big but they will be very different in their final outcome, PetPets have been around for a long time, they are popular and some are very expensive like Krawks and Moltenores. NeoHome Garden items are not very different to the traditional NeoHome furniture and they don't do anything yet, one could consider them a fad. If you want my advice, I would sell soon, though they may boom even more when NeoHome gardens are fully released, but then they will slowly go to a more reasonable price as people loose interest and a large variation of items are released.

Watch and learn, don't just jump into things you have no idea about, if it's not retired or made unbuyable there is no rush and take notes if you have to. This is about making money not losing it.

Buy small, sell big. This is an ancient philosophy now I know, but too many people hold onto items too long. Have a goal of what you want and stick to it. Sell when you think an item is at its peak, don't let its price roller coaster on you.
