Meercas - Who Are They Really?

by gossammer

I was just sitting around a corner of the food shop waiting for restock when I noticed the Ghost Lion and the Pant Devil having a nice little chat. Of course I had quivered in my shoes and had looked for a quick route out of their way but I just couldn't help noticing one sentence of their conversation. It was:

"Pant devil? Have you collected any priceless items lately?"

Me? I'm a major Neopian Times fan so I recalled a article on the conspiracy of the shadow government. Having gotten goose bumps all the way up and down my arms, I had settled my curious self down and listened onto their conversation. The Ghost Lion roared and remembered the days when Neopians didn't exist... when only the NeoPets and the shadow government had.

The most famous monster on the gallery of evil murmured something I hadn't heard clearly. "You did? A Krawk PetPet? Excellent job! We can get major Neopoints for that little guy..." the Ghost Lion had congratulated him after.

"Yes, your majesty. Yet, are we anywhere close in reaching our debt yet? I'm quite tired of acting the part of the bad guy," the Pant Devil looked down at the tips of his body in realisation of whom he had just confessed to. Shocked, I had just sat there, barely remembering to breathe. Majesty? Debt? Huh?!

The Ghost Lion as expected got extremely mad. "Were you questioning my actions? As the ruler of all the NeoPets and of all the many worlds in the past when this emergency came up, I had had to do something for those poor Meercas who were in danger of dying out. There they were on Mystery Island, down to a few rare number of Meercas because they didn't have a way of climbing the olive trees for food. Their only source was from kind NeoPets who occasionally handed them a olive or two. We, the all-powerful shadow government would never have the Neopoints to support them for all of eternity and faeries didn't have the knowledge to. Kauvara was the only NeoPet who had known how to solve the problem and she had an hefty fine of 999,999,999,999,999 Neopoints. Her solution was a rare-beyond-belief potion that would enable Meercas to grow tails. Of course I had hastily agreed. NEVER WOULD I ALLOW ONE OF MY SPECIES OF SUBJECTS TO BE EXTINCT!"

The poor Pant Devil stammered a apology and they continued on their way trying to steal some more hard-earned Neopoints.

I had figured the rest out by myself. Everything was so clear now. Long-unanswered questions were now solved by this one thing I had just overheard. Maybe Fuzzles were actually the ancestors of the Meercas... the ancestors with no tails. The money that's made by the items stolen by the monsters in the gallery of evil were to pay Kauvara. Maybe that's why the Faerie Queen started to sell hidden tower items, to help pay off the debt. Why this was all kept a secret and how the Ghost Lion became the ex-ruler.... Now THOSE are questions just waiting to be answered...
