Operation Neopia: Invincible Ice -- Part Four

by monarchistknight

"Your Majesty, my friends are in a pit with a tentacled monster. Would it be too hard to pull them out?" Cody said bluntly. The Queen gave prompt orders.

"Freelance, Swiftflight, Fastwing, and Stripebeak get the prisoners out of the pit. The Octorodon is awake!" she ordered. A Christmas Draik, Zafara, Pteri, and Eyrie flew towards the pit. "Now what did you want with the blade?" she asked. Timothy cut in.

"Cody the snowbeasts made a dash for the gates and are there already! They think a city has been built on their migratory grounds!" he exclaimed. Cody ran out to the gates, leaving Timothy and Caitlin in the palace. When he got there he saw a hundred 'soldiers' throwing assorted snowballs at the snowbeasts.

"This'll never work," he told himself. Then a thought struck him. These snowbeasts are just confused and lost. They just need to be led back to their own lands. "STOP!" he ordered. All the 'soldiers' put their snowballs down. "Samuel, you once said you learned basic snowbeastian from the Dead Languages course at Neoschool. Get them to follow me." Samuel thought for a moment. It'd been two years since he took that course!

"I'll try. Grrought growl hroom! Grrought hroom wrught!" The snowbeasts looked at the Gelert.

"Good job, Samuel. Now I just have to find their nesting grounds and who knows how long it'll take." How would he traverse fifteen miles plus how ever long it was to the migration grounds through a constant blizzard-like land? "Skis! I need two sets of Christmas Kau antlers and fast!" Two Kaus handed over their antlers. "Now I'll need four Christmas Scorchio belts!" The belts were quickly handed over. Tying a belt to each antler he made some crude, but working skis and started the fifteen miles trek. The snowbeasts followed.

Cody endured the frosty cold for two hours, making four miles of the way. It was then he saw the snowbeasts' footprints. Following them, he saw that they had been re-routed. Twice. "There was a snow storm here, but they obviously had never gotten caught in it before. Someone must've changed their direction." Looking to the east, he saw he was right. A huge crevice blocked the snowbeasts usual path, and made them head straight towards the storm. Unable to get through the storm, they went a different direction again, ending up heading for the Frozzen Lands. Using this theory, Cody was able to figure out where the beasts had started, where they were heading, and where they should've ended up when Samuel decoded a message passed between two snowbeasts.

"They say their Migration Grounds and near a frozen stream. If I know Geography, there's one down there," Samuel told Cody. It was in a straight path from where the beasts started.

"Thanks," Cody said. He went on again, and after much enduring the elements, he'd made it to the stream. The snowbeasts gave a growl of approval and settled down to their spots by the stream. "Okay, it's thirty miles back. This'll take a while. Wait, what's that?"

Meanwhile, inside the pit, the Octorodon's tentacles where literally filling up the whole pit bottom. The five still in the pit had to step on the tentacles, but if they stepped to hard a tentacle would ensnare them. Who'd know better than Nahum who was frantically trying to escape?

"Nahum, calm down! Cody went to get help! Someone should be here any- help! It got me!" Ashley said, now caught in a slimy tentacle. Kaleigh tried to pull the tentacle off, but a tentacle caught her, too. Warren and Jeff were trying very hard not to get trapped, when they saw four forms coming down into the pit. A Christmas Zafara, Eyrie, Pteri, and Draik came into view.

The Zafara punched the tentacle holding Ashley, and caught her with his strong arms. The Eyrie, dodging tentacles that were trying to snatch him, pulled Nahum out of his tentacle. The Pteri, acting quickly, seized Kaleigh by the horns, and flew her up to the top, as he couldn't hold her long. The Draik flew right into the pool, coming face to face with the Octorodon, dropped something in its one eye. The monster shrieked, and pulled in its tentacles. The Draik swam out, and then grabbed Jeff and Warren bringing them to safety.

Out of the pit and safe, Jeff asked, "Thanks, but what was that monster?"

The Pteri gave the answer, "It's the Octorodon, the last of its kind. It helps by keeping our water warm with its body heat. Every so often it wakes up and scours the pit bottom for food that we throw down sometimes. If you hurt it, it'll wrap its tentacles around you, but you already knew that. Oh, good luck with your Gelert friend. I heard he's trying to lead the snowbeast tribe back to their lands." Upon hearing this, the five ran outside, to the gates of the city. Caitlin and Timothy were there, too.

"Oh, you're okay, thank goodness!" Caitlin said, happy to see her friends safe.

     "Where's Cody?" Warren asked anxiously.

"I'm right here," Cody replied from behind them. They all turned around in shock.

"How'd you get there so fast?" Jeff asked. Cody smiled slyly.

"Nifty little things those portals," he said. They all understood. Cody then saw the Queen coming out from her palace, and requested them all to come in.

When all were inside, she began, "I'd like to thank you young Gelert for saving our lands. I don't know what else to do, but I can give you a token of our gratitude." She motioned for the Koi and Aisha who were guarding the box to open it, revealing the beautiful Frozen Blade of Ghorchester. "Long ago, our lands were defended by a noble and proud Gelert named Ghorchester. He protected us against many enemies, defeating them all, which explains why we have none now. One day, his prized blade, froze through. He tried to see if he could fix it, drawing water from the pool below to try to warm it. The water froze instantly. He tried to chip the ice off with a piece of flint. It froze up too. In a rage that his blade wasn't working, he froze the whole city into a giant ice city. Only those who'd been painted Christmas to have extra protection from the cold survived. The Queen sadly banished him. Even angrier, he froze the whole land. Now Ghorchester is no longer, and no one dares touch his blade, but maybe you could, being a Gelert and all." Cody nodded, walked over to touch the blade's hilt and picked up the blade.

"This thing's light," he muttered. The Queen was astonished.

"It's nearly a hundred pounds!" she exclaimed. Cody was now in awe. He was holding the blade that froze a whole sector, but didn't freeze him. He was holding the hundred pound blade that Ghorchester fought with, and it was suddenly light in his paws. He was holding the Frozen Blade of Ghorchester.

Suddenly, a whirlwind swept around him, but there was something warm and friendly about it. He was raised off the ground, and heard a voice recite:

"You have done well fulfilling ancient prophecy,
young Gelert, and have learned much.
In your time of greatest need,
The Frozen Blade of Ghorchester will return to you."

He was slowly lowered to the floor, and the whirlwind died down.

"Cody, what was that? It was cool!" Kaleigh exclaimed. Cody looked unshaken, unlike others thought he would be.

"I don't know, but it seemed so, like, holy. You know, when something feels so good you just can't get near it? It was like that," he explained, "Let's go back now. Our mission's done. Call up Seth."

Ten minutes later, the eight were inside STARTS. "So what took you so long?" Seth asked.

     "Cody," Jeff said.

"Oh, well that's what we thought. How'd you get out of whatever it was you were in?"

     "Cody."

"Okay, how'd you defeat the snowbeasts?"

     "Cody."

"Uh-huh. Well, I guess I'm not going to get anything out of you guys," Seth said, oblivious to the fact they were telling the truth.

"Samuel, I just wanted to say, I couldn't have gone all that way with you and Tony's help, so thanks," Cody whispered so as not to be heard. Samuel said, "Cody, after I talked with the snowbeasts for you we left. We had to go to school." Cody was amazed. "So I traveled 15 miles, leading a pack of snowbeasts, by myself?" Samuel nodded. "Whoa."

Timothy who was sitting next to Cody asked, "Cody, if it's not too hard, could you please tell me your history? You said I'd know someday." Cody nodded.

"It's long but here we go. I was born on the 14th day of Sleeping to a slave driver. My only purpose in life was to help him build, fix, and clean. I hated him, so one night, when all were asleep; I snuck out of that slave camp forever. I didn't have anywhere to go, so I tried the pound. A girl, who owned three other pets, Samuel, a Blumaroo, Tony, a Peophin and Jillian, a Poogle, adopted me. We were a happy family, and she loved all of us, or so I thought. I was abandoned for the worst reason. I was abandoned so she could adopt a Cybunny. I was mortified. I no longer trusted owners of any size, shape, or form. I wanted to be by myself, but had nowhere to go, so I stayed in the pound. For a year. No one adopted me. It didn't matter, as I didn't want to be adopted, but no one loved me. I ran away from the pound seeking a new life, and found Jeff. I heard about his little group of 'outcasts and sorrow bearers'. I learned I'm not alone, and joined them. I finally found what I needed. Friends. That's my story, Timothy. Timothy?" Cody said, looking over at his Buzz friend. He'd fallen asleep. Cody rolled his eyes.

Kaleigh looked behind her straight at Cody, "You know Cody, I always love it when you tell that story."

     "Really, Kaleigh?" he asked.

"Yeah. I think Jillian is a pretty name for a Poogle," she joked. They both laughed. "Seriously Cody, do you think that, maybe I'll get to have the next weapon thing? I'd like to see what it's like in that whirlwind thing." Cody chuckled.

     "Maybe we'll see."

"You incompetent fools! Can you explain why the Frozzen Lands are still on this map, hmm?"

     "W-w-were sorry!" a henchman quivered.

"Can you explain why the Frozzen Blade of Ghorchester is now gone?" The henchmen cowered uncontrollably. "No matter. I have bigger plans. One weapon is no great loss, as only one must be destroyed to break the prophecy. Go and capture the Grand Water Blade, now!" The henchmen ran out of the dark room. "And don't fail again!"
