Her mass of dark curly hair whipped around her face in the salty sea breeze, but she smiled. The churning Krawk Island waters were choppy today, but she maneuvered the ship like a pro. The air was fresh, and overhead a flock of weewoos made their way to the distant shore. It was the perfect day. Suddenly there was a shout. “Captain Coldfire! Come quickly!” The Pirate Ixi jerked her head away from the view and watched as a pirate ran up to her: a member of her crew. “What is it, Jonathan?” she asked quickly, her eyes upon the young Kougra’s face. “We’re being attacked!” he breathed. That caught her attention. “Take the wheel,” she commanded, reaching for the cutlass at her hip as she ran to the main deck of the ship. Coldfire stopped dead in her tracks and her eyes widened once she joined her crew. Another vessel had pulled up aside her own precious Raging Kateil. The other ship was large and imposing, and already a gangplank was being lowered onto the deck with enemy pirates waiting to board. There was no time for a pep talk. No time for anything. Instead, in front of her entire crew, the Pirate Ixi raised her cutlass. “Onward!” she called out, and the crew repeated her cry with enthusiasm just as the pirates of the other ship swarmed the deck. Coldfire knew how to move on the ship. She had long ago gained her sea legs. She skirted around the enemy pirates running towards her, twisting her body in a dance. As she batted away easy swipes at her, she scanned the crowd with her eyes, trying to locate the captain of the enemy ship. Finally, she spotted him. He was standing back from the crowd, surveying the battle, and his face was obscured by a dark hood. He’s not going to get off that easily! Coldfire thought, her eyes set on her target as she rushed towards him with her sword raised. However, just as she was within striking distance, he turned to face her and his hood fell down, revealing... “Snowfall?” Coldfire gasped, staring at the female spotted Gelert in front of her: her sister. “What—how...?” The spotted Gelert looked back at her, annoyed. “Coldfire! Coldfire! Snap out of it!” she demanded, waving her paw in front of her face. “Coldfir—” *** Coldfire suddenly snapped out of her reverie. She wasn’t on a ship anymore. Instead, the Pirate Ixi was seated at the edge of a dock, staring at the churning Krawk Island ocean wistfully. Her sister was glaring down at her. “Come on, Coldfire. It’s time for lunch.” “Sorry, sorry,” Coldfire said, fixing her skirt as she stood up to follow Snowfall back into the house. But before she headed inside, she gave the sea one last look. Someday, she promised, I'll have my own ship. And I will sail on you. And Coldfire never breaks her promises.
