Neopedia : Magon's Sentence

King Hagan sits to one corner of the hall; the bench for the Committee Against the Misuse of Educational Resources is to the other side. The stand for the accused is in the middle of the two. The room is dimly lit. Half burnt floor candles flicker. A lone lantern hangs from a hook in the rafters. It sways every time the double-doors open to let someone in, also bringing in their wake a draught of cold air. The light throws disproportioned shadows, making grotesque, hazy figures dance on the walls.

The doors open again. Four officials of the Court of Knowledge walk in escorting the accused, Magon. They double-bolt the door behind them. Magon has his head hung low. He seems to be muttering to himself but nothing is audible. His words get swallowed by the heavy stillness in the room. The somber mood of it all is oppressing and almost suffocating.

Magon takes the stand and looks imploringly at King Hagan. King Hagan clears his throat uncomfortably. The senior most member of the committee suddenly stands up, silencing the low murmur that had started within the committee after the accused was brought in. She looks pointedly at the accused. Her face gives away nothing. As if on cue, the others follow her gaze. She picks up the hammer and delicately brings it down on the pulpit but the message is loud and clear: the trial has begun.

Magon is given the chance to defend himself. He nervously clicks his tongue and scratches his arms, marring his speech. He manages to blurt out about putting the best years of his life into a project that has the potential to be the most altruistic project ever in Neopia with considerable effort.

"Is that all?" the senior official asks after he finishes. Her voice is like a shard of ice to his heart.

"No…I mean, yes, but you do see how imp-"

"Please give us a moment while we consider your appeal."

Magon shakes his head and looks up, as if talking to someone. The scratching intensifies.

Finally, the moment arrives. After a brief consultation with King Hagan, another official rises. He says, "After careful consideration of the circumstances, we, the Committee Against the Misuse of Educational Resources, find the accused, Magon, guilty of the crimes he is charged with." He pauses to look at Magon who now looks sickly in pallor.

He continues, "He is sentenced to two years of community service. As a part of his sentence, Magon will be teaching a group of simple-minded citizens Scientific Experiments for Beginners. He is to ensure they learn and pass a test that the King will himself conduct for them at the end of the tenure. During the sentence, he can-"

Before the official has a chance to finish speaking, Magon lets out a screeching cry of disbelief in, what seems like, pure frustration. "I could spend this time studying, researching and furthering my knowledge. Please, don’t do this. Please." But alas! The sentence has been passed and King Hagan is serious about it. As he is escorted outside the establishment, an official hears Magon say something like, "…run away from it all…" before passing out. With his voice being low and a gust of wind blowing hard, who can tell what was actually said?
