Mynci’s Beach: Sand, Sun, and Second Chances

by kindnessx

--------

The sun rose over the shoreline of Mystery Island, spilling warm light across the sand where laughter was already beginning to echo. It was the kind of morning that felt made for games. It was warm out, felt breezy, and humming with excitement.

A colourful banner stretched between two palm trees read: “Mynci Beach Volleyball Tournament!”

Neopets of all kinds had gathered around, forming small groups along the shore. Some were stretching, and others practising serves. The waves rolled in with a relaxing sound.

“Alright, teams!” Called out a Yellow Mynci named Tiki. He had taken it upon himself to organise the event. He stood on top of a driftwood log and announced, “Let’s keep things friendly but competitive!”

A Red Shoyru named Lisa stretched her wings and smiled. “Friendly is my middle name,” she said.

“That’s not even true,” muttered a Green Aisha named Stella, who happened to be a teammate. “You cried last time you lost,” she said while adjusting her headband.

“I did not cry,” Lisa shot back. “I simply expressed disappointment.” Nearby, a group of Kacheeks were giggling. The teams started to quickly form. There were players who played seasonally, and then others who had only just begun playing for the first time. Nobody really cared about skill level because it was all about fun.

Sidney, a Blue Gelert, hovered near the edge of the group. He wasn’t sure how he ended up here. He’d only meant to walk along the beach and collect shells. Somehow, he’d been swept into a team with Lisa and Stella.

“You’ll do great.” Stella told him, “Just hit the ball over the net, and that is as simple as it gets.”

“That’s good to know. Thank you.” Sidney replied.

The whistle blew, and the first match began. The ball flew high into the sky, glowing in the sunlight before dropping toward the sand. Lisa leapt, her wings catching the breeze as she spiked it cleanly over the net. They all started to cheer.

     “Nice one!” A bystander shouted.

Sidney watched as each player made their turn. The energy seemed to be contagious. The thrill of the game pulled him in despite his nerves. When the ball finally came his way, he panicked for a second, then swung. To everyone’s surprise, he hit it perfectly. The ball sailed over the net. Cheers around him exploded.

     “I did it?” Sidney asked.

“You did it!” Lisa laughed. “See? Natural talent!”

Sidney smiled and was proud of himself. The games continued, and each round was more energetic than the last. Sand was flying, paws were scrambling, wings flapping, and tails wagging. The scoreboard that was crudely drawn in the sand filled up quickly. By midday, the sun burned high, and the tournament reached its final match. Sidney’s team had made it to the end.

“Okay,” Stella said as she wiped sweat from her brow. “We’ve got this. We just have to stay focused.”

Across the net stood their opponents, which were a Green Lupe who seemed fierce, a Pink Uni who was very calm, and lastly a determined Orange Kougra. They looked like they were prepared. Tiki raised the whistle. “Final round!” The beach got quiet, and the whistle blew to start the game. At first, it was evenly matched. Both teams returned every serve as they were diving across the sand to hit the ball. The crowd was focused, cheering with every point.

Sidney’s nervousness finally faded, and he was focused. He moved faster and started to react more quickly. He even managed a diving save that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

“Where did that come from?” Lisa shouted.

“I don’t know!” Sidney replied as he tried to catch his breath.

The score climbed. 10–10. Then 11–11. The next point will win the game. The opposing team served the ball and it flew fast and low. Stella bumped it up in the air, and Lisa set it.

“Sidney!” She called. Sidney jumped and swung. All of a sudden, CRACK!

The sound was so loud it sounded like a snap of thunder. The net post started to tilt, then the rope snapped, and the net collapsed. The ball dropped uselessly into the sand.

     “What just happened?” Lisa said.

     “Did it break?” Sidney asked.

Tiki rushed toward the net and inspected it. His face fell. “Oh no!” The sturdy wooden post that held the net had split clean down the middle. The rope, worn from years of use, had finally given out.

“But what about the final point?” A bystander said.

     “So who wins?” Another asked.

Sidney was embarrassed and stared at the broken net. His excitement drained from his face, and his heart dropped.

“We were so close,” Stella muttered.

Lisa crossed her arms. “This can’t be how it ends.”

Tiki scratched his head. “I don’t think we can fix this very quickly. The tournament might have to…”

“Wait.” Sidney stepped forward. “What if we don’t end it like this? We all came here to play, not just to win. Yeah, the final point matters, but so does everything that got us here.” He glanced at both teams. “So instead of arguing about who wins, what if we finish this together?”

“Together?” the Kougra questioned, unsure of what he meant.

“We fix the net and keep playing. We can mix the teams and make it one big game instead of two sides.” Sidney said.

     Lisa smiled. “I like it.”

     “Me too.” Said Stella.

The Green Lupe from the opposing team shrugged. “Better than standing around arguing.”

Tiki’s face lit up. “That’s actually a great idea!”

The crowd began to chatter. Within minutes, everyone sprang into action. Some Neopets gathered sturdy driftwood to replace the broken post, while others braided stronger rope from vines found near the treeline. A group of Kacheeks worked together to dig deeper holes for stability. Sidney found himself helping tie knots alongside the Pink Uni from the opposing team.

“You were about to win that point,” she said.

“Maybe, but I might have tripped and missed. Guess we will never know.” Sidney replied.

She smiled. “Still. That was a good idea back there.”

“I just didn’t want it to end badly.” Sidney said.

“Then you got your wish.” She muttered.

The sun started to set, and the net was rebuilt stronger than before. Finally, Tiki stood once again with excitement. “Alright! New plan!” He pointed across the beach. “No teams and no score. We just play!”

The game that followed was unlike anything before. Neopets rotated in and out, laughing as they scrambled across the sand. There were no sides, just a constant back and forth while everyone was working together to keep the ball in the air as long as possible. Someone dove and missed, sending sand flying in the air. Another tripped over their own tail and burst out laughing. Even the players who took the game more seriously were relaxed and caught up in the joy of it. Sidney found himself in the middle of it all, running around and laughing. At one point, the ball came straight toward him, and he hit it. It wasn’t a perfect hit, but it was enough to keep it going.

     “Nice save!” Someone shouted.

The rally continued. Five hits went by. Then ten, fifteen and so forth. The crowd counted aloud now as each hit went.

“Twenty-three!” The crowd shouted. “Twenty-four!” The ball soared and dipped, but was saved again. “Thirty!” When it finally hit the ground at thirty-two, the beach crowd cheered with applause. Sidney bent over, catching his breath and had a big smile on his face.

Lisa patted him on the back. “Not bad for someone who just wandered onto the beach.”

Stella grinned. “Yeah, you might have found your thing.”

Sidney looked around at the group. He made new friends, and they all shared laughter. The golden sunset washing over everything set the scene perfectly.

     “Maybe I did,” he said.

Tiki blew the whistle one last time, not to end a match, but to gather everyone together.

“I think,” he announced, “this was the best tournament we’ve ever had, and next time we will build the net stronger from the start.”

As the sun set below the horizon, painting the sky in colours of pink and gold, the Neopets lingered around on the beach. Some sat in the sand and watched the waves. Others talked and replayed their favourite moments. Sidney sat in silence for a moment, letting it all sink in. Things hadn’t gone as planned, and the final match hadn’t ended with a clear winner, but overall, it felt better than any victory. What they’d built together was stronger than any single game. As the stars began to appear, one by one, above Mynci Beach, it was clear that this was a day none of them would forget.

     The End.
