Quote of the Week

My word, there’s so much in this box! It’s almost as if they compressed as much as they could into these small kits. All the same, these pieces are strange. Magic eyes with “invisible finger paint” and screws that adjust “for every doll head”, a stamp on mouth “that talks back”, hinges to make “living limbs”, what does all of that mean? It’s not too complicated for a proud purveyor of general goods, but it’s incredible. Of course, nothing fanciful or pretentious either, as I don’t need that. In the end, I would like to think of myself as an ordinary man. I have no desire for lavish mansions, decadent lifestyles or anything. All I need is proper funds to live a nice life to myself, a tranquil and peaceful one at that. Have I fallen for some two-piece conviction operation? Or is this the work of sorcery? Well, no point in planting my own behind on the floor and pondering, it’s time to build!

Technology: Trick or Treat?

For as long as Neopians can remember, Halloween has been a time of macabre merriment. The holiday has come to embody youthful exuberance, sugar-fueled nostalgia, pumpkin-spice mayhem, and the odd spook here and there. But recently, some Neopians have become concerned that Halloween fun has become too dependent on technology. It can be hard to imagine that Neopia's #1 social media (and generally privacy-violating) conglomerate, 'PetCentral, went live only two weeks ago. Yet, Neopians from all around the planet have quickly adopted the platform to effortlessly share photographs of themselves (or their Petpets) dressed in all sorts of cute, frightening, and even scandalously revealing costumes.

"The Return of Zombom" by precious_katuch14
Zombom grunted as he propped himself up on one elbow. Pain shot through his body from his arm, radiating into every part of him. He looked around at the scorch marks on the stone floor, the chairs and tables either knocked over or obliterated, the piles of bones that were all that remained of the skeleton warriors. Grimacing, he craned his neck to look at the ceiling that had been blown apart; the wreckage had created a small but constant shower of debris and dust, not unlike the dripping of water from a stalactite. He glanced over his shoulder at the magical orb he had built to come and go from his tower to White River, and back. As he sat up, he groaned, clutching his stomach. Gritting his teeth, he tried to say a healing spell, but it only patched him up enough for him to be able to stand; the Elephante was still in agony, and he limped his first few steps toward the magical teleportation orb.

"Purloined Presses and Procrastination" by queen_potema
"How could you forget it's Halloween?!" Elleri the Royal Blumaroo screamed at me as I dug through a large bin in the attic. I dug out an old witch hat with matted grey hair attached and handed it to her. "Look. Yell at me all you want. Halloween is different in Neopia. Sorry if I don't get excited at the prospect of you mouthing off and getting turned into a Mortog by a real witch!" Elleri scoffed and beat the hat a couple times with her tail to shake off the dust. "Whatever. Just admit you lost the calendar." I pursed my lips. Drat. She had me. "I admit to no such thing." She turned on her heel and marched to the attic door, her black dress leaving a trail in the dust. "I need more borovan." I grumbled. I hunched over to keep from hitting the cross beams and slowly climbed down the attic ladder, and immediately ducked as my Tyrannian Lupe, Ritonie, hurled a plastic hatchet at the wall.

"Ixi Rare Gem" by joanna_lewis
Ixidae slowly walked towards the door. She really didn’t want to do this, but what choice did she have? She’d hated that pound. It was an unbearable haunt where she felt so alone. The ixi couldn’t relate to the other abandoned pets because unlike them, her owner did want her. Didn’t he? Ixidae thrust that thought away. She knew she didn’t fit in there, so when the chance to run away presented itself, she took it. But they were out there, looking for her. If they found her, they’d haul her back to the pound and make sure she never had a chance to leave again. So, here she was days later, in front of this drab grey building with its oversized steel door. She looked for a handle, but couldn’t find one. Should she knock? No, there was a sign to ring the bell. Ixidae reached out one hoof and pressed the button. Nothing happened. She was just about to try again when there was a clanking from inside the building...
