The Cure for a Queen by kindnessx
--------
The news raced across Neopia. At first, nobody believed it. The giant tower floating high above the clouds had been open for as long as most Neopians could remember. It was the only place where the most rare items could be purchased, and its doors had never once been shut. Written on a shiny banner hanging across the entrance was: THE HIDDEN TOWER IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED! Queen Fyora is unable to receive visitors. The sight left visitors in shock. A crowd had formed under the tower's golden gates. Some merchants started talking to one another and others stared in confusion. There were collectors who had traveled from every corner of Neopia and wondered if it was some kind of prank. Among them stood a Green Acara named Susie. "This can't be right," she said. Beside her, a Blue Gelert frowned. "I've been coming here for twenty years. I've never seen the tower closed." Fear spread throughout the crowd and the tower doors opened. Instead of Queen Fyora stepping out, it was a group of faeries with worried looks on their faces. The lead faerie was a Air Faerie named Delina. She stepped up and announced, “we ask for your patience. Queen Fyora has become ill." "Ill?" Someone questioned. "Queen Fyora? How?” Another asked. “The queen has spent years helping Neopians by granting blessings and protecting the kingdom. She has maintained countless enchantments. Recently, her strength has started to fade. She is resting and receiving care, but until she recovers, the Hidden Tower must remain closed." Delina said. Nobody knew what to say. Fyora wasn't just another faerie. She was the ruler of Faerieland. She was a symbol of hope throughout Neopia and the idea of her being sick felt impossible. After a few moments, Delina returned inside and the doors closed once more. The crowd left and carried the troubling news with them. By sunset, all of Neopia knew. And by morning, everyone was talking about how they could help. Far above the clouds, Fyora sat in her chambers. Normally her room shines with purple magic but today it was dark. There were letters that sat on her desk unopened. Magical artifacts laid untouched on the shelves. Even her famous wand leaned against a chair as if she had forgotten about it. Fyora sighed. Every movement felt exhausting to her. The Healing Faeries had done everything they could by brewing potions and tried casting healing spells. They even tried creating enchanted remedies but nothing seemed to work for long. The illness wasn't dangerous, but it drained her magical energy faster than it could recover. For the first time in centuries, she felt powerless. A knock sounded at her door. “Come in," she called. The door opened and it was Queen Jhudora. Well, not exactly a queen but she entered with enough confidence to seem like one. Jhudora crossed her arms. “You look terrible." Fyora laughed in weakness. “Thank you for your concern." "I'm serious." Jhudora muttered. "I know." Fyora said. Jhudora glanced around the room. “You've really shut down the Hidden Tower?" "I had to." Fyora stated. "Well, the kingdom feels strange without you." Jhudora said. “That may be the nicest thing you've ever said." Fyora said smiling. "Don't get used to it." Jhudora huffed. Despite her usual attitude, concern was obvious in her eyes. Even Jhudora didn't want to imagine Neopia without Fyora. Meanwhile, something unusual was happening throughout the kingdom. Neopians began gathering in the Plaza to form a plan. Shopkeepers were discussing what they could do. There were messages on notice boards and even guilds held meetings. Everyone wanted to help. “What if we gather ingredients known for restoring magical energy?" A Red Kacheek said. Neopians got word of it and joined the effort. Some went into the forests of Meridell. Others searched the icy valleys of Terror Mountain. A few of them explored the dangerous depths of the Haunted Woods. They found herbs and magical berries. They even found some ancient healing flowers. Anything that might help Fyora was collected. Within days, there were piles of ingredients that filled Faerieland's central square. Scholars gathered at the libraries. Wizards and experts of magic searched ancient books. They examined scrolls and translated texts. A Yellow Lenny studied centuries-old records and finally discovered something promising. Ancient texts reveal that acts of kindness cure magical exhaustion. The theory sounded unusual but it made sense. Fyora had spent years giving her magic to others. Perhaps she needed Neopia's kindness returned. The idea traveled to Neopians and amazing things began happening. Random acts of kindness appeared everywhere. Neopians donated food to the pound. Shopkeepers gave away supplies to those in need. Guilds began sponsoring local festivities. Friendly players stepped up to teach the beginners the basics. Petpets had finally found homes. The amount of goodness flowing through Neopia became impossible to ignore. The clouds above Faerieland erupted into otherworldly colours as magic came alive. Delina entered Fyora's chambers carrying a basket several days later. "What is all of this?" Fyora asked. "These are letters and there are thousands of them." Delina said. Fyora couldn’t help but stare in amazement because of the basket that was overflowing with letters. “They are from Neopians." Delina smiled. Fyora carefully opened the first letter. Then kept opening more and more. Every page contained words of encouragement. There were thank you notes and stories of adventures. Some were about memories of blessings she had granted. Letters from families and accounts from travelers she had inspired. Hours had gone by as she read them all. Some of them made her laugh and others brought tears to her eyes. One Blue Kougra had written: “Dear Fyora, thank you for helping everyone. Please get better soon. I made you a drawing." Attached was a picture of Faerieland floating among smiling clouds. Fyora held the drawing close to her heart and it felt stronger. The tiredness wasn’t gone but it seemed to have lightened up. That evening, the crystal at the centre of Faerieland began glowing bright purple. Faeries gathered around it and the energy readings were unlike anything they'd seen before. Streams of light were shining from every direction across Neopia. The energy converged toward Faerieland and the kingdom was responding. Millions of acts of kindness were creating a wave of positive magic. The ancient scholar's theory had been right. The next morning, Fyora awoke feeling different. The exhaustion had lessened and her magical aura flickered once more. For the first time in weeks, she felt genuine strength returning. Excited faeries rushed through the palace. "Healing levels are improving!" One exclaimed. "Her magic is stabilizing!" Another shouted with excitement. They went to tell the news and Neopians were celebrating from all over. The recovery wasn't complete though and Fyora still needed time. The kingdom continued its efforts. No one wanted to stop now especially when they had come this far together. One week later, a gathering formed outside the Hidden Tower. Neopians from every land. There were Faeries of every type. Petpets were perched on shoulders waiting anxiously. Families stood side by side. The giant doors slowly opened. Then Fyora appeared and everyone cheered so loud that it echoed across the clouds. Applause thundered through the sky. Fyora stepped forward wearing her elegant gown and she looked healthy again. Tears glistened in her eyes as she gazed upon the crowd. "My friends," she began. “I have spent many years trying to help Neopia. When I became ill, I feared I had failed in my duties. But during my recovery, you reminded me of something important." She looked over the gathering. "Magic does not belong to one person. It exists within all of us." She gestured toward the kingdom below. "Every act of kindness and helping hand. Every generous gift and encouraging word. Those things carry power greater than any spell. You healed me not with potions or artifacts, but with compassion. And for that, I will be forever grateful." Fyora raised her wand and purple light burst into the sky. Thousands of stars appeared sparkling as they drifted across Faerieland like glowing snow. The entire kingdom seemed bathed in wonder. Then Fyora made one final announcement. "The Hidden Tower will reopen tomorrow. But, today shall be remembered as the Day of Kindness." She smiled. From that year forward, Neopians celebrated the holiday annually by exchanging gifts and helping neighbours. They remembered the time an entire kingdom came together to help the faerie who had spent centuries helping them. As the sun set behind Faerieland, Fyora stood upon her balcony watching the celebrations below. The Hidden Tower would reopen and life would return to normal. Neopia had discovered that its greatest magic was never hidden inside a tower. It had always existed in the hearts of its people. And that magic was stronger than anyone had ever imagined. The End.
