A Guide to Picking the Perfect Quill

*caw* *caw* *cluck* *squawk* Whoops! *clears throat* Apologies for that. For a second, I was accidentally speaking in Weewoo. While it may come as a surprise to you, dear reader, that I, the White Weewoo of Neopian Times fame, a mere Petpet, am able speak in Common Neopian, I must ask–who do you think has been editing each issue of Neopia most esteemed newspaper? *winks* While this wee little Petpet’s ability to speak like a fully-fledged Neopet may come as a surprise, my enthusiasm for ‘the quill’ should not. After all, here at the Neopian Times we like to reward our contributors with a trophy resembling the shape of our favorite writing tool!

*sigh* These days, it seems like nobody writes anything by hand. Call me old fashioned, but I think that there’s something uniquely special about the experience of putting pen to paper. While I understand that typing can be much more convenient, if you use the perfect quill, the experience is unrivaled. That is why I’ve drafted this guide to help Neopians decide which quill is right for them. *cluck * Consider it a feathered guide to writers everywhere!

     ***

     1. Comfort

The first factor to consider when selecting the perfect quill is comfort. No two quills are alike, as are no two hooves, fins, or paws; the quill that fits perfectly in my talons will not necessarily be the quill that will feel the most snug in your hand. Before committing to a particular quill, I would suggest trying out a few options at your local calligraphy shop. Some quills may feel too heavy and weigh your hand down while you write. Other quills may be too light and lack a satisfying grip. Some quills may be too rough and cause your hands to callous during extended writing sessions. Whereas other quills may be too smooth and slip and wobble when your hands (inevitably) get clammy.

Naturally, the type of quill that feels comfortable in the hands of most writers is made from a Weewoo’s feather. Yes, the feather from us Weewoo (or Weewoos, if you prefer), is not too heavy and not too light. Moreover, it provides just the right amount of friction to stay steady in your grasp no matter how long you write! If you’re just starting out, I suggest picking up a Weewoo quill so you can compare it with your other assortment of writing utensils.

     2. Durability

Once you’ve considered comfort, the next factor to consider is durability. Do you plan on using your quill to write poems for the Poetry Contest? Or, will you typically be using your quill to craft lengthier pieces of work, such as your next ten-part series submission to the Neopian Times? If you fall into the latter category, then you really need to consider the durability of your chosen writing utensil. All quilltips inevitably grow dull with extended use, but some quills are heartier than others.

If you’re looking for a durable quill, then I suggest purchasing one crafted from the fine feathers of a Wherfy. Yes, a Wherfy! Those cute and cuddly wintery Petpets are known for burrowing in fresh piles of snow while also having durable wings and feathers to withstand the harshest winter winds. A quill made from a Wherfy feather is a reliable choice for the long-form writer!

     3. Portability

Do you often find inspiration while wandering the great outdoors? Are you the type to travel with a quill in hand, ready to capture inspiration whenever and wherever it strikes? If so, the portability of your chosen quill becomes an essential consideration. After all, nothing disrupts the flow of creativity quite like opening your quill case to discover your trusty tool has snapped in half, rendering it unusable. A broken quill can bring even the most brilliant ideas to an abrupt halt, stifling the momentum of your artistic vision.

If you’re seeking a quill fit for life on the go, I highly recommend a feather from a Vaeolus! Known for their adventurous spirit, these daring Petpets soar high above the rugged, mountainous terrain of eastern Altador. Vaeolus feathers are not only light and portable but also remarkably resilient, capable of withstanding extreme heat. With one in hand, you’ll be ready to craft your next great masterpiece from the windy heights of Shenkuu to the fiery depths of Moltara!

     4. Flair

Riding in style? *pfft* To most writers, writing in style sounds like a more exciting time than cruising in a luxury car! While 'style' and 'substance' are often seen as opposing forces, for many, the two go hand-in-hand. After all, there’s something uniquely inspiring about writing with a stylish quill—it’s as if the elegance of the tool itself can spark creativity when inspiration feels scarce.

If you’re a writer who treasures both form and function, then a quill with flair is the perfect choice for you. For those who prioritize style, there’s no shortage of exquisite and unique quills to explore, such as the ethereal Faerie Pteri or the vibrant Faerie Lenny feather. For those seeking the ultimate writing companion, look no further than the legendary Rainbow Pteri Feather. Not only is this dazzling quill a feast for the eyes, but its vivid colors and storied reputation have earned it a place of honor, immortalized with its very own stamp—and avatar!

     5. Sustainability

The final element to consider when selecting the perfect quill is sustainability. While some quills are easily sourced, others require significant effort and environmental impact to obtain. Take, for example, the feather of a Quetzal. These somewhat mythical Petpets are native to the jungles surrounding the Lost City of Geraptiku. Accessing this remote and elusive location demands navigating the dense, untamed jungles of northern Mystery Island—an expedition that often harms the fragile local flora and fauna. While the allure of a rare and unique quill might be tempting, I encourage you to reflect on the ecological consequences your choice could have on our delicate Neopian ecosystem.

     ***

Selecting the perfect quill is no small feat, but by considering comfort, durability, portability, flair, and sustainability, you’ll be well on your way to finding the ideal writing companion. Whether you’re capturing inspiration in the wild or crafting your next Neopian Times masterpiece, the right quill can elevate your writing experience. So, choose wisely, fellow wordsmiths, and let your quill be as extraordinary as your creativity!
