The Top 10 Most Emo Petpets

A comprehensive guide to emo companionship:

Some are painted to reflect it: Grey, Halloween, Darigan, Shadow, maybe even Skunk, or Checkered. They customize carefully, refusing to leave the house without their Lacy Skeleton Gloves & Black Tears Makeup. They’re fans of Twisted Roses, Tandrak Shaye & that Usul that seems to work for everyone’s shop. They are *emo*.

Like it or not, emo Neopets exist, and they deserve rights. Being prone to social estrangement, one of the most important rights to uphold for emo Neopets is their right to dark, edgy & on-brand companionship. It simply isn’t feasible to expect them to riffle through the racks at Uni’s Clothing Shop for anything black with a Warf or an Angelpuss on the end of a leash. It’s not fair to sentence them to a lifetime of wandering through graveyards with a jolly little Poppit at their side. How are they supposed to write poetry, brood or cry if their cute little Faellie won’t stop being optimistic? The science is clear: emo Neopets need emo Petpets.

What makes a Petpet emo? Well, of course, there’s a certain look required, but looking the part is only half the equation. The right Petpet Paintbrush can make even the most delightful Petpet *look* emo, sure, but what really makes a good emo companion is the perfect combination of look and temperament. It may seem daunting, but hopefully, the task of finding the emo in your life a suitably umbral Petpet is made a bit easier with this helpful list of 10 of the most unapologetically emo Petpets on the market.

10.) Phnard - The perfect choice for those extra broody, grumpy emos, the Phnard is an aquatic shadow of a Petpet with a real chip on its squishy little shoulder. They love nothing more than to bask dismally at the edge of a rock pool, scowling at all the other cute little Petpets swimming merrily along, a beautiful mirror vision of the last time your emo Neopet went out in public. Many emos find these watery wallflowers just lovely.

9.) Crokabek - Every emo wants a foreboding winged creature to watch them ominously from the trees as they wander through the thick, lifeless maze of the Haunted Forest. Though these Petpets are native to Meridell, they are sure to fit in just as well anywhere poorly lit, whether it be your Neopet’s bedroom or the Deserted Fairgrounds. Their faces seem stuck in a constant, judgemental scowl, but Crokabeks are actually quite personable once you get to know them. They do tend to be aloof though, preferring to take their time getting to know new Neopets, and are careful about who they trust, but if anything, being a bit of an outsider just makes them all the more emo.

8.) Barbat - the Barbat is an emo classic; just a little guy with a big heart and the right amount of creepy to set them apart from other Faerie Petpets. There’s an old legend about a band of evil Korbats that were transformed into Barbats under a powerful curse long ago, but if anything, having your own dark, mysterious legends of old is definitely emo-- don’t ask me to explain how, but trust me, it is. Some Neopians consider Barbats to be a bit, well…dense, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. They can be a bit shy with strangers, but they are just as clever as any other Petpet around, you just need to get to know them a little first (much like emos).

7.) Rock - If your emo Neopet is insistent on being edgy & non-conformist, a Rock might just be the Petpet they’ve been searching for! What could be better than the cold, unfeeling solidarity of an inanimate object-- er, I mean, of this wonderful little Tyrannian Petpet? Only the most tortured, dynamic, creative & unique souls can truly understand the inner workings of the Pet Rock. You just wouldn’t get it (unless you’re emo.)

6.) Ukali - Stuck in a perpetually hopeless-looking pout, the Ukali is a precious choice for those emo Neopets with a soft spot for cuteness. No matter what you do, the Ukali simply refuses to smile. This behaviour, of course, is emo. If that didn’t seal the deal enough though, you may look no further than the Ukali Poetry Journal, a deeply depressing collection of poems that is a must-read for any Neopian hoping to truly understand these complex tortured artists/Medieval Petpets.

5.) Droolik - Known for their lack of ability to do pretty much anything, these slow-moving, winged-yet-flightless Petpets are a dream for those especially withdrawn Neopets who enjoy dwelling in the prison of their own crushing melancholy from behind dark curtains, listening to sombre music and staring at the wall. The Droolik will happily stare at those walls right alongside their dear friend all day! Who could ask for more from a petpet?

4.) Gremble - The perfect combination of cute and creepy, these odd little Petpets exude pure emo joy. From the scraggly black mop of hair to their twisty striped-sock-like feet, they will inspire your emo Neopet’s look and warm their hearts all at once. They’re freaky enough to keep unwanted strangers looking for small talk on the other side of the street, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if the beholder is emo, this spooky Petpet is nothing short of gorgeous.

3.) Frowny - For obvious reasons, the Frowny is as relatable a friend your emo Neopet could ever hope for. Not only are they quiet, compassionate creatures, but they will also never make your Neopet feel like an outcast for being sad purely for the aesthetic, since the Frowny is all about that. Even on the happiest day of their lives, these spherical Petpets are all frown, all the time. So emo.

2.) Meowclops - Every Neopet wants their Petpet to be friendly & lovable, even emo Neopets, and that’s why the Meowclops is one of the ultimate choices for any Neopet with space in their little black hearts. Unlike Kadoaties, Meowclops…es? Meowclopsii? Ahem…the Meowclops, is a quiet & thoughtful companion, happy to curl up on your Neopet’s lap while they pen passionate, heartbreaking free verse about how badly they spiralled after the Grooming Parlour ran out of Pitch Black Lipstick. Meowclops have long been seen as a Petpet for the ultra-wealthy, but nowadays they’re more affordable than ever-- still a bit pricey, but certainly more attainable than they were not long ago.

1.) Zomutt - The Zomutt is the pinnacle of emo companionship. They are adorable, but still off-putting enough to scare the normies away, their colour palette of blacks, greys & greens is highly appealing to emos & goths alike, and they know all the best spots to cry & look up at the moon wistfully in the Haunted Woods. If your emo Neopet is serious about Petpet ownership, there’s no better choice than the Zomutt! They can only be won at Test Your Strength, so if your emo Neopet isn’t the strongest hard-hitter, they can usually be found on the Trading Post-- they’re a bit pricey, but worth every single Neopoint spent and will pay you back tenfold with the lifetime of emo love they have to offer.

Being emo is extremely cool, unique, and quite frankly awe-inspiring (in my humble emo opinion), but it can also be lonely. It doesn’t have to be, though! Petpets are truly a gift to all Neopets and there are few things more beautiful than finding the right one and connecting immediately. It can be hard for some Neopets to find that perfect match though, so hopefully this list is helpful for the emos of Neopia and can lead many to a beloved, lifelong friendship that may even have the power to pull a smile or two out of them.
