Reselling: How to Make a Profit Off of Patience

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Isn’t that just restocking?” you say as you open another tab to the Magic Shop to look for a good Morphing Potion. Well…kind of. Reselling has to do with more big-ticket items than restocking does. Reselling mainly deals with items called ‘unbuyables’, which are items with a value of over 99,999 NP and therefore cannot be bought from shops. This means that all reselling takes place either in the Trading Post or the Auction House.

You might be shuddering as you remember your last encounter with a ‘reseller’. All you were trying to do was sell a paintbrush you got from a lucky wheel spin, and someone offers you only 10% of what the item is actually worth. When you reject, they tell you off in a neomail, saying “that’s the most NP you’re going to get for it”. Well, this article will help you make neopoints without angering people.

Now, before getting into all the details, you should probably know some terms commonly used in the Trading Post, since that’s where you’ll be spending most of your time.

UB = Unbuyable

ETS = Easy to Sell

HTS = Hard to Sell

GLS = Good Luck Selling

NTY = No Thank You

K = Thousand (Ex. 500k = 500,000 NP)

OBO = Or Better Offer

Pure = Neopoints Only

TP = Trading Post

Overpay in ETS = You can trade easy to sell items for the item you want, but you have to give items with a combined value that’s more than the item you want.

Buying

The first step to the reselling process is buying items to sell. I personally use the Auction House, but some others use the TP as well. I like the Auction House better because there’s no chance of your offer getting rejected because the price is already set. When you get to the Auction House, browse the first page of items and move your way backwards until the end. If you find something you want to bid on, wait to bid until it gets to the upper half of the first page. If you bid too early, there’s a chance that someone can outbid you, making the item cost more. If you want to buy items on the TP, you should probably go to the Trading/Auctions section of the Neoboards first to see if anyone has any discounts before you offer.

How do you determine what to buy, you ask? Well, you’re probably going to want a UB, so anything worth 100k NP or more. Some popular items to start with are morphing potions and cheap paintbrushes because they’re pretty easy to sell. Here are some other important factors that you should consider before buying the item:

• Determine the actual value of an item before you buy it! This may sound obvious, but you need to check the Trading Post to see what other people are charging for the same item. That’s your competition!
• If an item on the TP has no price listed by the owner, ignore it. If no one on the entire TP has a price listed for the item, don’t buy it. Think about it: do you really want to neomail everyone with the item listed on the TP asking how much it’s worth? That’s a huge waste of time.
• At least 90% of the time, your item won’t sell for the exact price you’re looking for. Really think about your purchase and determine whether it’s really a good deal.
• The more valuable an object is, the greater profit you can make from it. For example, if you buy something for 200k, you’re probably going to make less than 100k neopoints from it, but if you buy an item for 2 million neopoints, you could make much more than 100k neopoints.
• Some other items that I’ve had success with are petpet paintbrushes, painted petpets, books, gourmet foods, plushies, stamps, and coins. These aren’t the easiest, but they’ll definitely sell!
• If you’re looking for an item’s price on the TP, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page. If it has a ‘Next’ button that means that there’s more trades of that item. If this is the case, I don’t advise buying that item. If there’s a lot of people selling the item, there’s a lot more competition, and there’s a greater chance that someone will change the price.
• I usually don’t bother with items you can get from the Forgotten Shore (ex. Pirate Draik, Krawk, Techo, and Aisha Morphing Potions, Pirate Draik Eggs, etc.) because so many people are obtaining/buying/selling them and the prices change too much. I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy them, but if you don’t feel like keeping track of their fluid prices, then don’t worry about them.
• Like everything else about reselling, patience is required. Some days, you might not find any offers you like. Just keep looking: you’ll find something!
• When you buy the item you want, make sure to write the item down, the price you bought it at, and how much you’re selling it for. It makes it a lot easier to accept or decline offers when you know how much you paid for the item.

Now that you have your items, you need to make a profit! Most resellers use the Trading Post to sell their items because there’s room for bargaining. Also, an auction can only last for up to two days, while a TP lot can last for up to two weeks. To set up a trade, go to the Trading Post, then click on the ‘Create a new trade’ button, check the box of the item you want to trade, put what you want in your wishlist, and click on the ‘Start Trading!’ button. Here are some tips for the most effective trading:

• Always state your price/what you want in your wishlist!!! Don’t just put ‘neomail me’ in your wishlist! I have never understood how people can sell anything without a price. You need to tell your potential customers what you want from them. Buyers are much more likely to offer on items that have a clear price because it saves them time and they won’t get rejected if they offer fairly. As mentioned earlier, if you don’t know the price of an item because no one on the TP has it, don’t buy it! People might disagree with this, but I’ve found that this is truly the fastest way to do business.
• Don’t be offended if someone offers a lot lower than you were expecting. Trust me, I’ve been there, but the buyer isn’t a mind reader. Instead, you can mail them and try to ask for a slightly higher price, or you can simply reject/ignore them, Life goes on.
• Don’t be afraid to be firm with your pricing! If you’re trying to get a higher price from someone and they aren’t budging, just politely reject them. If someone mails you and asks for a lower price, you are allowed to be firm with your pricing, but don’t go overboard! Fighting over 25k (or more if the item is more expensive) isn’t fun for both parties involved.
• As I’ve already said, patience is key! You could be in the right place at the right time and get an item sold within the hour, or you could have something sitting in your trades for a month or more. The key is to keep advertising. If someone gives you an offer you aren’t satisfied with, hold out. An offer will surely come. I have never sold at a loss or broken even, and you shouldn’t either. If you’re getting desperate, at least wait until a profitable offer comes around, but this should rarely happen if ever.
• As for advertising, there’s a whole section of the Neoboards for that! On the Trading/Auctions board, you can post a new thread with what you’re selling, or you can post on someone else’s thread about what you’re selling. If you find a thread that hasn’t been used for a while, it’s probably a good idea to neomail that person with your offer. Don’t be scared to neomail people: the worst they can say is no!
• When you do sell your item, be sure to mark what price you sold it for! This way, you can determine how much you really made off of the sale.
