The Fight Against Vocivus

by rurirawr

--------

Nothing could have prepared Rayue for the war against Vocivus the Ceaseless Gourmandizer.

Not the tough survival exercises during her time at the Swashbuckling Academy. Not the months-long, gruelling drills at the Mystery Island Training School. Not even the rigorous magical practices taught in Faerieland Academy.

All of it paled in comparison to this.

Vocivus was, without a doubt, the most powerful enemy Rayue had ever faced. Judging by the desperate expressions around her, the thousands of warriors, mages, archers and battlers fighting alongside her felt exactly the same. The monstrous being towered over Altador like a living catastrophe, shrugging off attacks that could have destroyed entire Neopian lands and driven the Darkest Faerie or Dr Sloth away.

This was not a battle of strength, nor was it a battle of skill or wits.

It was a battle of attrition.

Every fighter had probably been pushed to their limit hours ago. Now they were being forced beyond them, spending the last reserves of their stamina and willpower simply to keep Vocivus occupied. Yet, despite the countless attacks raining upon it from every direction, the Ceaseless Gourmandizer continued its advance, unstoppable and seemingly untiring.

Rayue clenched her cosmic staff so tightly her feathers trembled. There had to be something that worked.

Drawing upon what little energy remained within her, she raised her staff towards the colossal monstrosity. Brilliant orbs of orange and yellow spiralled into existence around its tip.

     "Sunbeam Slicer!"

Spears of blazing light erupted from the orbs and streaked across the battlefield, slamming squarely into the massive creature's head. The shockwave from the impact generated winds so strong it pushed back some of the warriors closest to Vocivus. For a brief moment, everyone watched with bated breath as Rayue's magical beams dissipated.

The spell had struck Vocivus directly in the centre of its face. The Lenny could see the exact spot her orbs had hit, but there was no scorch mark. Not even the tiniest hint of a scratch. That was one of her most powerful spells...

Vocivus' numerous eyes stared ahead blankly. A second later, one of the smaller ones blinked, followed by another. And another. Its main oculus shifted slightly to the left, but its focus was not directed towards Rayue. She was inconsequential, probably even invisible to it.

She collapsed to the ground from exhaustion, feeling the vestiges of resilience leave her body. A soot-covered Grey Acara rushed over to her with a first-aid kit, still panting a little as she helped Rayue up into a sitting position.

"Here, drink this," she said gently, producing an ornate clay bottle. "It's a Strength Serum. It'll help you regain your strength."

Rayue downed the potion, feeling the hot liquid course through her veins. The ache remained, but her limbs no longer felt made of stone. She glanced at the blue badge clipped onto the Acara's vest. 'Clarique' was handwritten in neat cursive above a line of printed text that read 'NeoHospital volunteer'. "Thanks, Clarique," she mumbled.

The Acara quickly shook her head. "No, no, thank you. We common folk are so grateful to Neopians like you who are risking your lives to protect us. Providing medical assistance is the least we can do to help," she commented. "Anyway, your entire body must be sore." She fished out a Cooling Ointment from the kit and unscrewed the cap. "If it hurts anywhere, I can help relieve muscle tension and ease the pain."

Rayue stretched out her left wing, on which Clarique slathered some minty unguent and started massaging. As she watched the Acara, a sudden thought occurred to her, one which she could not help but ask. "Were you originally painted Grey or...?"

"I was affected by the Void," Clarique replied with a wan smile. "I used to be a Royalgirl." The Lenny instinctively pulled back, but she held on firmly to her appendage. "You're wondering how you could possibly let a princess tend to you, right? I get that all the time," she heaved a sigh as she explained. "You and I aren't any different now, y'know. Ultimately, we're all just Neopians who wish to save our home. Even the monarchies and leaders have set aside their differences and joined forces to tackle this calamity. I believe they'll figure something out eventually."

Rayue remained silent. She was ashamed to admit that she had fewer expectations than a Grey Neopian. As the fight wore on, she had begun to feel doubt. Vocivus seemed invincible—impenetrable from every angle. Despair and dread were slowly consuming her as she took in the current plight.

Around them, other mages launched torrents of air, water and dark magic. Arrows peppered the sky as archers fired multiple volleys, paws and claws bruised from the repeated effort. Warriors charged with a myriad of weapons, from poisoned darts and sharpened knives to long spears and heavy maces, hopelessly chipping away at the enemy's rock-solid body.

But all Vocivus did was ignore them. It swung its gargantuan tentacles chaotically, wiping out legions of soldiers in a single swoop while uprooting large trees and smashing robust edifices into smithereens, sending debris flying everywhere.

     "Watch out!" someone yelled.

Rayue and Clarique turned their heads towards the voice. A Blue Aisha had just split a gigantic piece of flying rock cleanly into two with a zap of dark purple energy from a device strapped to her wrist.

"Keep attacking! Don't stop!" the Aisha commanded as she aimed another stream of Void magic at one of Vocivus' tentacles. "We have to give it all we've got!"

A new flurry of physical and magical attacks showered upon it. Jets of flame coiled around its limbs, restricting its movement. A multitude of ice spikes plunged from above like falling stalactites, while great slabs of earth rose from the ground and slammed into its body with thunderous force. Weapon wielders hacked away at its base, masterfully manoeuvring around its path as they did so. Archers continued their relentless volleys, filling the sky with countless arrows that shimmered in the light of explosions and magical bursts.

Vocivus endured it all just the same.

That was, until a concentrated blast of lightning from a nearby mage struck an area on the creature's side already darkened by hours of relentless bombardment. A faint crack spread across its surface. Moments later, a barrage of enchanted arrows pierced the same spot, widening the fracture ever so slightly.

     "Look!" a soldier shouted.

The cry spread through the ranks.

     "It's cracking!"

     "Keep hitting that spot!"

Another round of attacks collided with the damaged section. Chunks of blackened rock broke free and tumbled from Vocivus' body. The wound was tiny compared to the monster's immense size, but it was damage nonetheless.

It was proof that the beast could be taken down.

A wave of hope swept across the battlefield.

Exhausted warriors straightened their backs. Mages who had nearly depleted their stamina forced themselves to cast again. Even the wounded found renewed determination.

     "We can hurt it!"

     "We can bring it down!"

"Our onslaught must continue!" the Blue Aisha screamed in response.

Rayue stared at the fracture, her heart pounding.

For so long, Vocivus had seemed like an unstoppable force of nature—an immortal nightmare that could not be challenged. But now, she had seen the evidence with her own eyes.

     It was not invincible.

The despair that had weighed upon her chest began to crack apart, just like the enemy's armour. She glanced at Clarique, who merely nodded her head in approval, a tear leaving a white streak down her cheek. Without wasting another second, she quickly grabbed her staff and, with a powerful beat of her wings, propelled herself back into the air.

"Everyone!" she shouted, her voice carrying across the masses. "Don't give up! It's working!"

Hundreds of them answered her with a roar of approval. The Blue Aisha grinned and punched the air with a fist.

"You heard her! Hit it with everything you've got!"

A brilliant sphere of pink magic converged around Rayue's staff as she drew upon every ounce of strength she possessed. She let it grow until its size was comparable to that of Altador's Colosseum, before hurling it directly at the injured site.

The massive projectile streaked through the air like a comet, slamming into the spot right where she wanted it. Her spell carried such immense force that the ground shuddered beneath the impact.

For the first time since the war had begun, Vocivus recoiled and released a deep, thunderous cry of pain.

A stunned silence lasted only a fraction of a second before the entire army erupted into deafening cheers.

     "It felt that!"

     "We pushed it back!"

"Keep going! It's now or never!"

Joy and hope spread like wildfire once again.

Rayue settled onto the dirt ground, her wing draped over Clarique's shoulder for support. The rallying cries of thousands stirred something deep within her. Her fading conviction and resolve reignited, but more importantly, a profound sense of relief washed over her like fresh spring rain.

     Victory no longer seemed impossible.

     The End.
