The Rarest Pets in Neopia

     While there isn’t one specific Pet variation that has been verified as THE rarest Pet in all of Neopia, there ARE different criteria that certainly makes up a rare Pet. In this article, I breakdown the top 4 criteria to owning a rare Neopet: Name, Species, colour, and Wearables. It should be noted that not every colour or wearable is available for all Pet species—but creating the perfect combo with what’s possible is sure to make the coolest and rarest Pet Neopia has ever seen! Let’s dive in!

          NAMES

     It’s no secret that names are an important part of your Pet creation, but did you know that there ARE names that are rarer than others? There are so many Pets that exist in Neopia that finding a name that hasn’t already been taken can be an exciting challenge of its own. Pet names with 4-5 letters are typically harder to come by these days, making them the rarest. Following short names are “real word” names—which are self explanatory, but words or names that are pronounceable and do not include numbers or symbols. The third rarest type of Pet name are “matching names.” Matching names are names that are single or multi-worded, but whatever it is describes the “look” of the Pet. For instance, I have a Baby Lupe named BabyMeech. Having “baby” in the name of a Baby Neopet makes the name more intentional. It signals that the owner has put some thought into what this Neopet would be, and named it accordingly.

     SPECIES

     As mentioned above, there are currently 56+ adoptable Pet species in Neopia, but which are the rarest? The Varwolf, by default, is arguably the rarest Pet species. This is due to the fact that they are only available by using the Premium Species change perk. Krawks and Draiks tie for second place when it comes to rarest species because they require more work to obtain than other species—and are not available for creation on their designated “Pet Day.” Draiks must be created using a Draik egg, and Krawks can only be created through the Fungus Caves, making them more rare.

     Now, for limited species. Limited species are Neopets that can only be created during certain times of the year—usually on their special day of the year (i.e. Poogle Day). These species may not be as rare as Varwolfs, Krawks, or Draiks, but still very special indeed! Limited Species include: Tonu, Chomby, Lutari, Cybunny, Hissi, Koi, Kiko, Ruki, Poogle, and Jetsam.

     There’s a large debate on what colour is THE rarest colour in Neopia. However, it’s hard to declare one winner as not all colours are available for all species. So what colours are the rarest if we had to guess? It's important that we break down colours into 4 different categories since there are multiple ways to change your Pets colour: Lab ray exclusives, paint brushes, morphing potions, and transmogrification potions.

     I would say the rarest colours come from the list of Lab Ray Exclusive colours: Burlap,Ice, Mosaic, MSP, Robot, and Sponge. Even IF you collect all map pieces and gain access to the Lab Ray, these colour outcomes are still not guaranteed and are completely random, making them more desirable and rare.

     Aside from Lab Ray exclusives colours, you can still achieve a rare Pet colour by using the traditional method: a good ole paint brush! While there are actual retired and rare paint brushes, to me personally, I think price plays a huge factor in the rarity of a paintbrush too. The harder a paintbrush is to get, the more rare it can be viewed. Which is why Maraquan takes the cake for the rarest paintbrush colour (in my opinion).

     Next we have morphing potions. Morphing potions can change your Pet's colour and species at the same time, depending on its name. Some of the most sought-after, rare morphing potions are the Desert Lutari Morphing Potion as well as the Transparent Skeith Morphing Potion.

     Lastly, transmogrification potions. Transmogrification potions. will change your Pets species, but will turn them into a mutant colour. The two most expensive transmogrification potions on the market as of now are the Lupe Transmogrification Potion and the Poogle transmogrification potion!

          WEARABLES

     Wearables are one of the coolest ways to set your Neopet apart from the rest! While there’s only so many species and colour combinations, customizing your Pet with wearables creates endless possibilities for the overall look of your Pet. They are also great ways to show off personalities and really make a statement. So… what are the most valuable/hard to get wearables you may ask?

     Grarrl Beach Towel Hoodie: estimated to cost around 60,000,000 NP…that is, if you can find one for sale

     Meepits Tube Garland: This cute garland comes with a price...and that price is currently around 35,000,000 NP.

     Royal Zafara Plushie Tea Party Trinket: This cute tea party will cost you close to 28,000,000 NP… Now I understand why the Boston Tea Party happened—that’s some expensive tea!

          BACKGROUNDS

     You can't show off your wearables without a background of course! Kidding--you can totally add wearables without adding backgrounds, but I must admit...it looks a little incomplete! Here are the top 3 rarest backgrounds in Neopia!

     Uni Sky Battle Background: While Uni's sound magical and mythical, they are certainly real...And so is the 45,000,000 NP price tag of this background!
