Top 10 Cakes with Memorable Backstories!

by _myst_queen

--------

Every year, we gather around and celebrate another year of Neopets. From showering our pets with gifts, to throwing lavish parties that has the Pant Devil lurking from the window. We open gifts and make some noise. And we eat cake.

      A lot of cake.

Cakes with sprinkles, cakes with gobs of frosting, cakes with edible glitter, and cakes with the fluffy insides.

But have you ever wondered about the stories behind some of your favorite Neopian cakes? They make for an interesting tale or two. Let’s take a look back at some of the memorable cakes you can still find and buy today!

     10. Radioactive Sloth Cake

Here is a little-known fact for you. Originally called Sloth Cake, it had to be renamed after the following incident. When presented at a banquet honouring Dr. Sloth, everyone was amazed at this cake that glowed in the dark. However, when a slice was consumed, the eater would also glow-in-the-dark! After the initial panic subsided, those that glowed engaged in a game of glow-in-the-dark tag inside the Grundo Warehouse that is still remembered fondly to this day on Virtupets Space Station.

     9. Jelly Sponge Cake

Before being sold by the slice within the walls of the Jelly Food shop in Jelly World,

     8. Four Layer Carrot Cake

Be careful what you decide to bring to a garden party. Quaint tea, delicate finger sandwiches, and a stampede of Meepits? Illusen did not predict that her Tea at the Glade gathering would have been ruined after she brought out the Four Layer Carrot Cake to the other Earth Faerie guests. Picture this: a cool breeze whispering through the ancient trees that surround Illusen’s Glade while folk music plays magically on instruments coming from the meadow. When all of a sudden! A herd of Meepits descend on the party in their craze quest to gather all the carrots to turn into carrot juice. What’s left is a broken leafy archway, overturned dessert tables, and several trampled bags of party favors.

     7. Molten Lava Cake

Originally baked in the pits of Moltara, it was sold out of a food truck for a food festival in Neopia Central. You might think the unusual hot and humid weather was what put others off from trying the Molten Lava Cake, but you would be wrong. The cake kept melting every fork that sliced into it!

     6. Eyeball Stew Cake

It is never a good idea to bake a cake while brewing a curse potion, and Edna learned that the hard way one night when she accidentally threw in the ingredients for her potion into the mixing bowl for a birthday cake. She stirred clockwise instead of counterclockwise and after she baked it, this… monstrosity came out. Never wasteful, Edna brought it to the birthday party. “What?” she said as she cut into the cake. “It’s a dessert that watches you while you eat it!”

     5. Chained Vault Cake

Baked and brought into the National Neopian Bank to celebrate a new vault that had been installed, there was confusion amongst the staff when no one could figure out how to cut the cake that was chained and locked. It was quite embarrassing when the Meerca Brothers were called in to use their dastardly skills to break into the vault cake, but don’t ask the Bank Manager about this. He will deny it!

      4. Altador Cup Cake

It’s either the best cake you ever had, or the worst cake you ever had. Depending on who you supported for the Altador Cup, winners are treated to the most delicious cake that some report tasting like fluffy gold and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. For the losers who supported the non-winning team, the frosting tasted like moldy cheese and the cake tasted like toe lint. Pro Tip: Choose the winning team next year.

      3. Super Deluxe Maraquan Victory Cake

Created to commemorate the famous underwater triumph of Maraqua, this cake is an aquatic engineering marvel. Light, airy, and perfectly buoyant… below sea level. Unfortunately for land Neopians who were celebrating in the victory, the moment the cake was brought to the surface, it collapsed into syrupy soup. Maraquan chefs insisted it’s meant to be enjoyed underwater, but jealous critics maintained that a cake that tastes like a soggy mess is not a victory at all.

     2. Deluxe Fyora Day Cake

A cake for Faerieland’s Queen Fyora. Presented to her on one particular afternoon during the annual Fyora Day celebration. It was met with “Ooos” and “Ahhs” as it sparkled amidst the cloudy day. However, before anyone could enjoy the cake, it started to float up and away. Not even the fastest faeries could catch up with it as the cake flew around the party and performed a series of aerial tricks before disappearing amongst the clouds. Fyora thought it best that in the future, cakes shouldn’t be baked with real wings.

          Honourable Mentions

Before I reveal the cake with the most memorable backstory, I would be remiss if I didn’t reveal some Honourable Mentions to this list of some food that might not be cake, but close to it.

     Cursed Qasalan Pancakes

A delicious stack of pancakes for breakfast with a side of bringing home a curse. Some say the curse is worth it as the pancakes are the best they’ve ever tasted.

     Army of Undead Cupcakes

Originally brought to a block party in the Haunted Woods by a disgruntled Lupe who waged war against his neighbors using the cupcakes as his infantry.

     Abominable Fruitcake

It may look cute and delicious, but this fruitcake was left out in the cold a little too long. It has been known to growl if you try to slice into it, and occasionally scurries off to find its own frosting. In extreme cases, it enjoys chasing around guests at holiday parties if you ignore it for too long.

     1. Stack It High Cake

Finally, we’ve reached the most memorable cake! In anticipation for Neopets’ 2nd Birthday, the Breadmaster and Chef Bonju engaged in a competition to create the grandest cake. The Breadmaster took the challenge to heart and started baking the tallest cake ever seen in Neopia. He stacked a sponge layer on top of a sponge layer. It was so tall, it outgrew the Neopian Bakery and had to be assembled outside. Queen Fyora sent a polite—yet firm—letter to the Breadmaster that the cake’s height was an “air traffic hazard” for the faeries.

However, before a winner could be announced, the Breadmaster’s (almost) masterpiece was stacked a layer too high and toppled across Neopia Central burying nearly every shop in a mountain of frosting, sprinkles, and cake.

It took months to eat-up—I mean clean-up!

And there you have it! The top ten most memorable cakes you can buy around Neopia. Which one are you going to eat first?
