Never Have I Ever Had a Mutant Pet

by cranberyyy

--------

No, not because I dislike them, not because I think they're scary and not because I believe my Neopets' safety is guaranteed by avoiding extra eyes and unusual limbs. I simply overlooked these misunderstood creatures. My dream pet ideas start with customisation. It’s just great to have matching aesthetics, everything lavender and cutesy. The customisation isn’t just about looks. It also gives your pet a certain vibe and personality. When I thought of mine, I never thought of Mutant. Today I want to investigate what I'm missing out on.

     1. First impression

All current Neopet species can be painted Mutant. The appearance varies greatly. Some look almost ethereal, while others have unusual features like extra eyes, multiple heads or completely unexpected shapes. They may not have the traditional cute appearance that many Neopians look for, but that is exactly what makes them interesting. Mutant customisation possibilities can go several directions. They can be transformed into something spookier, scarier-looking than initially. They can also be transformed into something adorable, even if it doesn't match the traditional idea of "cute." However, customising a Mutant comes with its own challenges. It’s not possible to use all wearables for Mutants, so finding the perfect pieces requires some searching and creativity. This limitation can also inspire new ideas and make the customisation process even more rewarding. But before I decide if a Mutant pet really is for me, I’d like to investigate further.

     2. Obtaining a Mutant

The lab ray - For those who enjoy surprises, the Lab Ray offers the thrill of discovering a Mutant pet unexpectedly, without having planned the transformation from the beginning. It’s the most unpredictable and uncertain way of getting one. I wouldn’t suggest this route if you’re sure that a Mutant Neopet is exactly what you want. Besides, your pet could change in many unexpected ways before becoming a Mutant.

Transmogrification potions - This is a more intentional route. A Transmogrification Potion changes a pet into a Mutant version of a specific species. For example, a Zafara Transmogrification Potion creates a Mutant Zafara. Be aware that some of these potions are hard on your wallet; inflation is crazy these days!

Adoption - Sometimes a Neopian already created the Mutant pet you were dreaming of. While this is an adorable way to give a Mutant a loving home, there aren’t always many Mutant pets available for adoption. It might be a slow way to obtain one.

     3. Personality

Like many others, my first thought was they must be evil, mean, weird and in other ways unpleasant. I was sooo wrong! After meeting a couple of Mutant owners and their pets, my opinion did a complete 180. Mutants, like any other pets, have different personalities. Some are very intelligent, some are loud and social, while others are calm and charming in their own unique way. Some may love adventures, while others are happiest relaxing at home. A pet's appearance does not determine who they are.

To understand Mutant pets better, I decided to look beyond my own assumptions and closest friends to see what other Neopians had to say. Across Neopia, many Mutant owners share stories about their pets, their personalities, and the reasons they chose them. Some owners appreciate the unusual appearance, while others love the fact that their Mutants stand out from the crowd. A common theme appears again and again: once you get to know a Mutant pet, it becomes much easier to see the personality behind the appearance.

     4. Breaking the stereotypes

Here I hope to share some myths vs facts that I’ve learned in my Mutant investigation:

Myth #1: Mutant pets are planning to take over Neopia

Fact #1: Most Mutants are too busy deciding what snack they want or finding the perfect wearable. Some have 3 eyes for a reason.

Myth #2: Every Mutant pet gets stuck in doorways.

Fact #2: Most of them manage just fine. The real challenge is convincing visitors that the horns were always part of the design.

Myth #3: Mutants are automatically banned from the Beauty Contest.

Fact #3: Beauty comes in many forms. While Mutants may not fit everyone's idea of elegance, they are just as welcome in the Beauty Contest as any other Neopet.

     5. Styling Mutant pets

Since my biggest concern was how to style these unusual creatures, I had to explore the world of customisation. I started by looking at Mutant-specific wearables.

Neopoint items - My personal favourites here would be: Mutant Fungus Among Us, Mutant Pink Boney Wings and Mutant Staff of Foulness. Each creates a completely different aesthetic, showing that Mutants aren't limited to a single style. Whether you're aiming for a nature-inspired look, something slightly whimsical, or a truly spooky creation, there are plenty of directions to explore. However, the selection of Mutant-specific Neopoint wearables is fairly limited. If you’re looking to style your pets using just Neopoint items, I’d recommend looking for backgrounds, foregrounds and other effects. These can have just as much impact on your pet's overall look as the Mutant-specific items themselves.

For the rest of my investigation, I turned to NeoCash wearables.

Embracing the spooky side - This category is full of intimidating options, for example: Mutant Long Mysterious Cloak, Gangrene Mutant Wings, Chains are a Mutant's BFF. One thing I particularly enjoyed is that many of these items have Dyeworks versions, giving you even more colours and combinations to experiment with. Find the style that best suits your Mutant!

The unexpected cute side - I always suspected Mutants could be adorable, and these items proved me right: Mutant Butterfly Accessory, Mutant Rainbow Shimmer Body Paint, Mutant Sleepy Eyes Contacts. These can soften a Mutant's appearance while still celebrating what makes them unique.

My personal favourites - One item that stands out to me the most is Radioactive Mutant Markings. They give pets an otherworldly, magical appearance unlike anything else. Another item that really stands out to me is Mutant Winter Pigtails Wig. While it doesn't suit every species, it creates the perfect balance of cute and creepy. Finally, the Spooky Spiderweb Mutant Markings. Perfect for a true “Haunted Woods” resident.

After all this research, I've realised that Mutants are far more versatile than I ever imagined. They can be spooky, whimsical, regal, magical or even surprisingly cute. At the end of the day, the perfect customisation isn't about following a theme; it's about creating a look that tells your pet's story.

So, is a Mutant pet for you? Only you can answer that. But if you're willing to look beyond first impressions, embrace a unique challenge and let your creativity run wild, you might discover that your next dream pet isn't the one you always imagined.

After researching Mutants, I discovered that my biggest obstacle was never the pets themselves. It was the image I had created in my head. I thought a dream pet had to fit a certain aesthetic, but Mutants showed me that creativity often starts when you step outside your comfort zone.

As for me? My investigation is over... Did I immediately rush to create a Mutant pet? Not quite. But I can confidently say they have earned a place on my list of possibilities. Actually, wait… Have you seen the new Styling Studio Prismatic Mutant pets? I take my words back, and I’m absolutely rushing to create a couple of these mesmerising creatures!
