They Grey Year - An Interview with Whistles by arcanemon11
--------
Altador Cup: The Grey Year The 2025 Altador Cup will forever go down as “The Grey Year” due to the disruptions caused by Vira and her henchmen in Altador. We were able to catch up with each of the teams to get a small update from the teams and players; however, notably missing from the interviews were a few familiar faces. We caught up with everyone’s favourite referee to get an update from the iconic Whistles to see what he has been up to in this offseason and get his take on The Grey Year. Interviewer: It is great to see you again, Whistles. This year was certainly a little different for the Altador Cup. How were things for you this year? Whistles: Different certainly is an understatement. As many know, I fell ill with the Grey Curse, which contributed to the Neopian Yooyuball League’s decision to forgo the typical tournament this year. Not feeling well enough to help referee the matches certainly has made my year feel off as a result. I think I have been able to referee each year since the beginning of the Cup, and so it feels almost surreal that I didn’t do that this year. Interviewer: Speaking of the Grey Curse you’ve been pretty open about your health struggles with The Grey Curse. How have you been doing with your recovery? Whistles: I take things day by day. I’ve seen a fair bit of improvement over the last couple of months. While I still do feel the residual grey often, I don’t find myself crying as much, which is a huge improvement from previously. Hovri has been a great support through all of it. He had a rough go of things after graduating from Brightvale University, but never gave up and now is a great commentator. He’s been over to help me out with some things around the house when my energy is low, and I really appreciate his help. Overall, I’ve seen a lot of progress, and I am optimistic that I will be feeling better and able to referee some more Yooyuball here soon. Interviewer: It is great to hear you are recovering well. During your year off did you work on anything in particular? Any goals for the next year? Whistles: Obviously, recovery and healing are my top priority right now. I just want to be back at it and able to keep up with the fast-paced game. But I am also always working on doing my best to improve on calls and penalties. Being a referee, you get criticized often. If you miss a penalty, you’ll hear about it. If people disagree with your call, you’ll hear about it. I tend to focus on the game in front of me, but I’m always looking to improve. Dasher and I remain good friends and colleagues, and I’ve been working with him to get his take on some of the more controversial calls from last year. As a former forward, he knows a lot about the mechanics of shooting and balancing the Yooyu, so he gives me a good perspective on the players and their mindsets. Interviewer: The Altador Cup XIX was a big year for the cup. Dacardia joined the league, and it was the first year for their team. How do you think The Grey Year has been influencing the teams? Whistles: Obviously the players want to play. In an ideal scenario, that is what they would have liked to happen this year, but they were all understanding given the current situation. I do feel for both Dacardia and Kreludor though. Dacardia, while finishing 17th, really started to find its place in the league and developed a lot over the season as a team. I know they worked hard in the off-season to improve, and I feel bad that they didn’t have the opportunity to demonstrate what they had developed and learned. Tyrra is a fabulous captain and has really been working with her team during the off-season. Her leg has really healed well and isn’t impacting her play at all. Camila really worked on her perfectionist tendencies this year, and she learned a lot from her co-training sessions with Tulay over at Mystery Island. And you know Ruffaele wanted to take another swing at that Darigan team and Tandrak. And Jarek is always a fun player to work with. He keeps my job interesting with how passionate he can be. He’s not afraid to let me know when he thinks I have made a bad call *chuckles*. I guess I am just so impressed with Team Dacardia and all that they have done over the last couple of years. They know a thing or two about coming back from a disaster, too. That’s a big mental advantage. So I think this would have been a big year for them. They’ve put in the hours, play clean, faced a lot and still grew so much over the last year. But Kreludor, the last winners, also didn’t have the chance to defend their title either. Last year was a big win for them. It was over 10 years since their last win in 2012 and I’m sure they would have fought hard to defend their title. Derlyn has really built a strong team over the years. Much like Dacardia, they too have faced a lot together. Derlyn was almost on the cut list during Cup X, which a lot of people forget about. But one thing she was able to do well was bring her team together after all that. Ealyn was a great pick up for the team, but needed to be worked into the team dynamics. Coco’s departure also left a big hole in the team morale as well, but Derlyn always got them through it. I would have been interested to see how Motor would have done this last year. He’s not a rookie anymore, but he and I have gotten into several discussions about unsportsman-like conduct during a couple games last year, and I think the off-season would be good for him to cool down a bit. It’s no surprise that given the trades over the last several years that Kreludor and Krawk Island remain close, but Feldon has been working with Motor a lot, and I am curious if the discipline needed to run a ship rubbed off on Motor. He’s got a lot of potential. Interviewer: Reflecting back on The Grey Year, what do you think were the big takeaways from the scaled-down Cup this year? Whistles: It is heartwarming to me to see how the teams came together this year to support each other. Yes, certainly, there are a lot of heated rivalries in the Cup, however, this year it was great to see the players come together to create something unique and feasible for the Cup this year given everything that is going on. The players really wanted to still give Neopians something special to look forward to each day during the cup and really did their best to make it a fun event. I can’t think of many years I’ve seen the Darigan and Haunted Woods teams work so well together to get prizes distributed for the fans, and it is clear that the players really just wanted to give it the best they could for the fans.
Interviewer: What are you looking forward to most in the coming year? Whistles: Well, things are still a bit hectic right now in Altador, with Vira and her minions still running around, but we have some hope that things might stabilize soon. If so, I think that would increase the odds of an Altador Cup this year, however, I am not a part of that decision making, and it is purely speculation on my end. Interviewer: Last question – we all know that Whistles was originally your nickname that your mother gave you and you have since legally changed your name because it stuck so well. What was your previous name? Whistles: *laughs* Great question, but like in life, some things are better left a mystery. No comment. Thank you for tuning into this interview with everyone’s favourite Altador Cup Referee, Whistles. We wish him well in his recovery and are excited to see him out on the court again soon.
