Quote of the Week

Secluded away, far from everywhere else and the more developed sections of the woods was an old, dilapidated building. Stomping sounds coming from inside, chains rattling as something moved through the building. Whisps of ghostly lights flickering behind the windows.

Shades of Spooky: 9 Costume Ideas for Grey Pets

HAUNTED WOODS – It’s that spooky time of year again, when Pets of all shapes and stripes set out in their best costumes looking for adventures and sweets. But as the Grey Curse marks its second Halloween in Neopia, many Pets have been left feeling a lot more ‘sullen’ than they are ‘scary’. With many of our dearest Pets turned grey by the curse, and with no cure for their affliction in sight, some might find choosing a costume to get their newly greyed Pets into the Halloween spirit an impossible task. Luckily, this is far from the case. There are many spooky characters and figures from across Neopia who have been grey all along, at least on the inside! Their dampened mood and weary outlook make them the perfect subjects for a grey pet’s Halloween costume. This article features the top ten spookiest costumes for your Grey Pets, from easiest to toughest to pull off. We’ll even throw in some choice items to make your costume complete, and a simple catchphrase to help your pet embody that character! 1. Sleepy Zombie Catchphrase: Ughhh... Naaaapsss... Possible Wearables: Singed Trousers, Not Enough Sleep Wig, Bloodshot Eye Contacts First on our list, and our easiest for a grey pet to pull off, is a simple Zombie costume. No one likes being woken up, especially if they were promised eternal slumber, and Grey Pets can use that grumpiness to their advantage! Plus, that grey skin is a perfect match for undead flesh, no cosmetics required. A switch from "boohooo…." to "braiiiins….." might be easier than you might expect!

Your Guide to Trick-or-Treating in the Haunted Woods

Halloween is a wonderful time of year, full of all kinds of fun treats. Many Neopians look forward to this celebration all year. The Haunted Woods is the place to be this season. There are spooky delights beyond your wildest dreams to be found, but it's fraught with frights that could catch travellers unaware. Werelupes prowl the woods, ghosts haunt the scattered graveyards, and some say the Deserted Fairground is rigged to steal your hard-earned Neopoints! Here are 13 known dangers to keep an eye out for as you explore these dreadful woods, as well as a few tips to maximize your treats and minimize the tricks. Esophagor RAWRRR! A gaping hole in the ground screams as you wander towards the gates of the Haunted Woods. It gives you quite a fright at first, but when you take a closer look, you spot two glowing red dots staring back at you. The realization dawns: you’ve stumbled upon the infamous Esophagor. As you cautiously approach him, the creature bellows, "MUST... EAT..." Don’t worry, he doesn’t mean you (hopefully). He’s just hungry for some spooky food items and wants to send you on a quest. Do not accept, and I repeat, do not accept his quests! This will waste valuable trick-or-treating time. Here are a few survival tips: The Esophagor is rooted to the spot, so if you tiptoe carefully around him, you’ll be safe. If a trick-or-treat bag happens to be nearby, grab it quickly while your partner distracts him, maybe with a little dance or some dramatic gestures.

Haunted Woods Travel Brochure

There is a land south of Neopia Central, north of Lost Desert, and west of Faerieland that strikes fear into the hearts of many a Neopian: the Haunted Woods. This is an extensive guide for anyone brave enough to go or scared enough to stay away. Or simply anyone else who may be curious. The Haunted Woods is broken up into two parts: the Woods and the Deserted Fairground. As such we will be exploring the points of interest in each locale. Perhaps it will inspire you to take a visit, or at least it will encourage you to learn about a faraway land if you have no intention of visiting such a terrifying place. But remember – not everything is what it seems at first, so perhaps it is best to reserve such judgements. The Haunted Woods The name Haunted Woods is a bit of a misnomer – it’s more of a haunted maze. The paths are designed to get you lost and the trees keep you from seeing too far ahead to keep you lost. If you get too far off the paths and end up in the outskirts and you might run into folks such as Sophie the Swamp Witch or Gorunda the Wise; that’s when you know you’ve left the Woods and have wandered too far. Stick to the path and these listed areas and you will run into minimal trouble. Games Fetch This is a game that is a maze within a maze. You play a Blumaroo that is tasked with retrieving a specific item from within the maze and getting out within a certain number of moves. The maze is randomly generated and you can only see a portion of the map at any given time. It takes some guesswork to find the item, but the exit will always be the opposite from where you began.

"One Scary Night" by qeenoneo
Pealightfull and Acraim had been looking forward to Halloween for weeks, and they could barely contain their excitement in the days leading up to it. “I hope we’ll get lots of candy floss!” Pealightfull said excitedly. Acraim shook her head and said, “be grateful for whatever candy they give you, and don’t be greedy!” She was a few years older and felt responsible for him, and didn’t want to appear rude to the citizens of the Haunted Woods on this special night. She was nervous, too. While they’d gone trick-or-treating before, they normally stuck to their neighbourhood. This would be the first time making the trek to the Haunted Woods, which felt a lot scarier. Their friends had told them that there was a lot of great candy and decorations to be found there, though, and they felt old enough to finally give it a chance. They had spent a lot of time and effort on their costumes as well, and were very proud of the results. Pealightfull had sewn himself a cape to become a Super Attack Pea, whereas Acraim had made use of her glowing skin to turn herself into a bubbling Toxic Waste Barrel. Their costumes were ready and stitched tight, their candy bags grasped with closed fists, and their sheer determination shone bright through the eerie atmosphere of the Haunted Woods. It was time to go. They had heard stories of one crowning house which gave out all of the best candy during every year’s Halloween celebrations. It was at the end of the street, around the corner and up a small hill, which was shrouded by dead shrubbery all year round. The fog never seemed to lift, even during the summertime...

"It's Halloween" by xakemii
Neopia was, by most counts, an enjoyable place to grow up. Canca loved throwing snowballs at her friends in the caves at Snowy Valley, watching cheese rounds hurtle down a hill in Meridell, and even lurking around Jhudora's Bluff, trying desperately to capture a glimpse of the infamous dark witch. The one exception was the Haunted Woods. Just being near the place gave Canca the shudders. She couldn't stand the looming trees that seemed to whisper about you as you walked by. Edna's cackling seemed to penetrate far beyond the walls of her castle, and the sound of it made Canca's heart turn to ice. Even the shops were creepy—filled to the brim with eyeball-themed foods and petpets that nipped at her feet. Canca's friends said that the Deserted Fairground made it all worth it, but Canca disagreed. She'd never won a single game in the place and was convinced that all the stalls were rigged. Her friends insisted that they had won before, but Canca had never seen it happen, so she assumed they were all lying in some desperate attempt to look cool. And so, Canca was not thrilled to be standing at the edge of the Haunted Woods. She shifted from foot to foot as her friends cackled with glee. Woisan nudged his shoulder against Canca's, getting her attention. "You don't have to come with us if you don't want to," Woisan said, quiet enough that the Wenzhi wouldn't overhear. Canca knew that Woisan was trying to be kind. She knew that if she said that she absolutely refused to step foot into those Woods, he would come up with some excuse for their friends and walk her home.

"The Dice of Destiny" by sporty2443
”Buckle up, kids, we’re playing Neoquest!” Jacques looked up from where he was scrutinising a map of the west Coral Sea with his companions, one eyebrow raised at the boisterous Usul standing in the doorway. For once, the boisterous Usul in question wasn’t Garin – he was standing next to Jacques, with a finger still resting where the map marked the seaport nearest to Faerieland. And yet, by this point in the voyage, the outburst didn’t really phase either of them. After taking a moment to absorb the words, Jacques dryly said, “We’re on a pirate ship, Hannah. The only buckles here are for keeping our sword belts on.” Hannah folded her arms and leaned against the doorway with a playful smirk. “Buckle those up, then. It’ll help with immersion.” This whole thing had started about two weeks ago, when the Black Pawkeet’s crew had decided to take a friendly visit to Maraqua. Garin had gone off with Isca to explore the ruins of Old Maraqua, where they’d stumbled upon a deep cave that a collapsing structure had recently opened up. Inside, they’d found a creepy statue of some weird tentacle monster. Isca swore she could sense some sort of evil magic coming off of it, so Garin decided to call for backup from an acquaintance who had experience with mysterious treasures of the possibly-cursed variety. That was how Hannah ended up on the ship. Once she’d reached Old Maraqua, though, she took one look at the thing, declared it “super cursed,” and decided she needed help from professionals in magical artefact wrangling to safely dispose of the statue. So now Garin’s backup...
