Why Creativity is the Heart of Neopia by ultimatekai123
--------
The older I get, the less time I have to make art. Yet, when I log into Neopets every day, creativity is still the heart of everything I do. I still make time to write for the Neopian Times every once in a while. I customize and write little stories for my pets. I meticulously organize my gallery to be as aesthetic as possible. I even occasionally find time to enter the Beauty Contest. This, more than anything, is the reason I still love this site after joining over 20 years ago. The more I thought about how creativity is the heart of my time on Neopia, the more I realized that creativity is the heart of Neopia itself.
Not All Creativity Looks the Same Whether you collect items for your gallery, write stories, enter the Customization Contest, roleplay on the NeoBoards, or submit to the Neopian Times, you are likely doing something creative somewhere on the site. Maybe you don't think of yourself as an "artist," which is totally valid. Not everyone is creating what one might think of as art. Obviously, there are incredible visual artists all over the site that are submitting to the Art Contest, drawing their pets, and entering the Beauty Contest, but even if you're not one of those types of people, that doesn't mean you aren't expressing yourself and being creative. One of my favorite things to do is lurk on the NeoBoards just to look at other users' accounts. I'll look at how they customize their pets (so pretty!), what kind of items they like to collect, and how they choose to code their userlookups. I love seeing how unique we all are. Some users have cutesy, pink userlookups with nothing but Kacheeks and Usuls in flowy dresses and sparkly wigs. Others might have a collection of Pirate pets and a gallery full of ocean-themed food items. Just the way you choose to engage with the site is creative in itself.
Neopets is a Safe Place to Create It's easy to get burned out creatively, and it's also very possible that you just don't have much time to create anything in the first place. When I was younger, I took time to draw every single day, but now I'm lucky if I make time to draw a few times a month. What I love about the different creative outlets across Neopia is that there's absolutely no pressure. If you simply don't want to customize your pets, you don't have to. If you don't want to collect anything for your gallery, you don't have to. If you're a beginner artist, you have just as much of a chance to win a Creative Contest as a seasoned artist. If you're a writer who only has time to submit to the Poetry Contest once in a blue moon, that's okay! In Neopia, you're completely free to create at your own pace and your own skill level. This zero pressure environment is truly the best at fostering creativity. Not only do I actually feel inspired every time I log in, but there is a huge community of like-minded people who are ready to cheer me on at whatever creative endeavor I decide to partake in. I have never once encountered someone in Neopia who makes me feel discouraged about my art, and I imagine other users can echo this sentiment.
Why the Neopian Times Matters The Neopian Times has been around for over 25 years. Isn't that wild to think about? I wrote my first article for the Neopian Times in Y13, and it's so interesting to look back at that article and see how my writing style has changed over time (it's also a little embarrassing, I must admit!). To prepare writing for this monumental issue #1050, I found myself reflecting on the Neopian Times as a creative outlet, and how this little Neopian newspaper has been a creative anchor for so many of us throughout the years. Getting published in the Neopian Times is still deeply meaningful and incredibly rewarding to those of us with the guts to submit our work. You pour your heart and soul into a piece, you take creative risks, and it pays off immensely when you see your art on one of your favorite websites, preserved in time forever. The most meaningful and rewarding thing of all, though, is the community. The Neopian Writers NeoBoard is where hopeful writers and artists can talk about their submissions, track progress, and get advice. You will also often find artists wanting to collaborate on a submission with another artist. When someone receives a rejection Neomail, other users will jump in to offer support and kindness. This sense of community is what makes Neopets such a wonderful website, and why so many of us keep coming back after all this time.
As Long as Neopians Are Creating, Neopia is Alive Of course, it's always exciting when there's a new event, an interesting plot, or some shiny new items that appear on the site. With so many new things being added every single day, Neopia feels very alive. At the end of the day, though, Neopia isn't alive because of updates or events. It's alive because of its users. It's alive because people are still writing, drawing, curating, caring, and imagining. Every article written, every pet customized, every item collected, and every userlookup coded is proof that Neopia is being inhabited in a meaningful way. Even when our creations are small or unseen, they matter. Our creativity is our presence. For those of you reading this who are scared to put yourself out there creatively, just know that you're already doing it every time you log in, no matter what your particular playing style may be. Whether you want to submit something to the Neopian Times, enter the Caption Contest, or even just make the coolest looking signature for the NeoBoards, please know that your creativity is important, and we're all rooting you on!
