Silvera the Lupe sniffed the sweet spring air, breathing in deeply the
fragrant scents of flowers in mid bloom. A soft breeze played at her slender
face as she stood on the hill overlooking her pack members, all of which
were feeding at the time. Her silvery coat shone in the bright morning
sunlight and her sapphire eyes dazzled in the light. Looking down on her
lovely pack was an enjoyable sight indeed.
After she had had her relaxed morning session, she descended down the
hill towards her mate and child.
Her little infant fell head over heels as he tried to catch a butterfly.
Her mate Freskan picked him back up off his chin and dusted him off with
one paw. Freskan's glossy black coat was sleek and soft, his deep green
eyes penetrating hers.
"He's practicing his hunting skills," Freskan said in his deep rumbling
voice as their little pup, Gulius, leaped back after the butterfly stubbornly.
"No, no, no son you crouch in the grass, waiting for the moment when
the butterfly won't expect anything," Freskan explained, crouching low
with his son and explaining. "Then POUNCE!" Freskan said as he leaped
and caught the unsuspecting butterfly under his paws.
Gulius looked admiringly at his father. "Dad, can you teach me how to
catch a butterfly just like you?" he asked, the silver streak on his temple
glimmering slightly.
Gulius had inherited Freskan's black coat but had gotten Silvera's sapphire
eyes and a silver streak across his temple.
"Sure, come along, I'll teach you," Freskan said as he lead Gulius to
a better hunting ground.
Silvera smiled warmly after them. They were such a happy family and this
pack was so happy as well. Life couldn't get better. Of course, the down
side to this was it could only get worse…
Suddenly, her shoulder shot out with pain as she felt the crest burning
it with simmering heat. Silvera had inherited a rainbow arc on her shoulder
from her father and it had never bothered her before. But it was now that
she remembered her father's words…
"There will come a time when you are needed for the pack," he had said,
at the day he had giving the role of Alpha Lupe to her. It is very important
you go and try to find what your quest is. The crest will lead you, not
to worry. You will know the time is right for when you are needed because
that crest will tell you in ways you can't imagine."
The crest was definitely telling her something. It was pulling her somewhere.
But she collapsed before she could take one step to where she thought
the crest was taking her. A red Lupe dashed to her side, followed by many
other willing helpers.
"Silvera, are you all right?" they were all asking as they tried to
help in someway. The red Lupe nudged her to her feet.
"It's all right, just a cramp," she lied.
Fighting the pain in her shoulder, she bolted off, not wanting to drag
her fellow pack mates into this business, whatever it may be. Half limping,
half running, she followed the pull of her crest, which was shining gold.
As she ran, dark storm clouds decided that it was time to roll into the
valley and deliver a surprise storm. Silvera just grunted as the rain
began to pour from the skies.
At first, the rain wasn't so bad…then came the thunder and lightning
as the skies bellowed their rage. Lightning forked the sky and thunder
clapped. There was a cave up ahead and a ray of hope seemed to part the
clouds and shine on it. Lightning, suddenly, snaked downwards and struck
a tree like a snakes tongue darting in and out from its mouth of grey
clouds. The tree crashed to the ground and added to the deafening shrieks
of thunder plundering through the air.
The tree fell in her path as she skidded to stop crashing into it. She
wove around the tree and headed to the cave, rain pounding against her
already aching shoulder. Her muscles seemed to scream at her to stop as
the rain came down even harder. She put on a final burst of speed as she
entered the cave and collapsed on the floor. Wheezing on the floor, she
panted and looked up only to see another Lupe! She quickly got to her
feet but was punished with a stab of pain in her stomach. She fell once
again.
"I'm sorry, I was trying to find shelter from the rain and this cave
was…"
"I've been expecting you," the Lupe said. It was only then that Silvera
noticed she was rainbow colored in both eyes and in fur!
"Huh? What?" Silvera asked, obviously confused.
"Come in and I'll explain," the rainbow Lupe said as she turned to lead
Silvera farther into the cave. They went to the very back of the cave
and came up to a rock perfectly flat and circular.
"You were told about how you would be given a quest to test your abilities
when the appropriate time came, weren't you?" the rainbow Lupe asked.
"Yes… but who are you?"
"I am the Lupe Goddess," she explained, puffing up proudly. It was only
then that Silvera noticed just how big this Lupe was. She also noticed
the strange, gold curl of hair on the Lupe's forehead.
"My name is Elveris."
"What is my quest anyway?" Silvera said quickly. Elveris looked aggravated
and Silvera hung her head. That seemed to satisfy Elveris.
"Your quest will become clear soon enough. There is something called
the rainbow gem. It is connected to the rainbow and as you know the prophecy…"
"That the rainbow is our staircase to heaven," Silvera recited her father's
words.
"Yes," Elveris said, not amused at being interrupted again.
"Well, there is a Lupe of pure evil that awakens every generation of
the rainbow Lupes. Every generation, he steals the gem and until the rainbow
Lupe defeats him, the rainbow is broken and will not allow Lupes to transfer
to the after life. His name is Vadismal. You have to defeat him. First
you have to test your agility, defence and strength. Then you will battle
Vadismal! This circular rock is a portal to the quest area. Simply step
on it and you will be transported to another realm where you will battle."
With that, Elveris stepped up to the portal and put her paw on a little
pad beside it. A ray of rainbow light shot up from the rock. Knowing what
she had to do, Silvera stepped onto the portal and was suddenly rushing
past flying colors! She was enveloped in light and color on all sides,
whirring past her in a big blur. She felt like she was being sucked into
a whirlwind. Her breath was gone as she raced past colors and light.
Then it all stopped and she was in a clearing. Standing there was a bright
blue Uni, waiting for her. The Uni pointed her horn at Silvera and said,
"here is the test of agility. Race me and win, then you can move on to
the next level!" the Uni said. Without any other words, the Uni was lining
up at the starting. The starting was a line dug into the dirt. Silvera
looked ahead to see obstacles of every sort. With a piercing whinny from
the Uni, they were off in a cloud of dust.
