He was punished by Time to live forever because he meddled with the magic of the Immortals. He was forced to wander aimlessly throughout the lands and help those who are lost. After thousands of years of servitude, the curse is finally broken, and he is given another chance to live.

Moonlight could show his true nature though, and would appear as some sort of skeletal figure, but that's really the least of his worries.
