Vault Keeper
There will always be fools who tempt fate.
The back alleys and unlit streets of Moltara are a festering ground for the poor and hungry. Trust me, it is no place for the average citizen to wander. Of course, I didn't know this upon my first visit so I was spectacularly lost. As I wound my way deeper and deeper into the heart of the city, I came upon a peculiar sight. There was an alley. It had a single old lantern in an ocean of darkness. Its dim light reflected off the pale white eyes of a finely dressed gentleman who seemed preoccupied with his coins. Aware of his apparent blindness, I wished to make my presence and harmless intentions known but he broke the silence before I could.
Begone... Barely a whisper.
He diverted his attention from the coins in his hand towards me. His eyes were cold. His mouth curled up into a twisted smile. Fear struck me and my vision faded. The lamp flickered and the shadows danced around me.
I woke up in the busier streets of Moltara next to one of the narrow branching alleys. The darkness in it seemed to stretch impossibly long. I must say that this experience and the blind gentleman continues to tear at my curiosity even to this day. But to be perfectly honest, I am far too terrified to find him again.
